You can promote a 24/7 YouTube stream in two different ways: make the stream vertical so viewers may discover it while browsing Shorts, and publish Shorts that show a compelling moment or announce a specific upcoming segment. Neither route guarantees placement or traffic, and an ordinary promotional Short does not automatically link viewers to your always-on stream.
How do I use YouTube Shorts to promote my live stream?
First decide whether you want people to discover the live broadcast itself or see a separate video that gives them a reason to visit your channel. YouTube supports both a vertical-live discovery surface and promotional videos, but they work differently.

Can people find my live stream while scrolling Shorts?
Yes, potentially, if your live stream has a vertical viewing version. YouTube Help says viewers, including people who are not already subscribers, can find vertical live streams while browsing Shorts. That is a discovery opportunity, not a promise that YouTube will place a particular stream or deliver a particular audience.
YouTube Live Control Room supports simultaneous horizontal and vertical versions. When you dual stream, viewers browsing Shorts on mobile see the vertical version; both versions use the same live chat. You cannot add the vertical version after the stream has begun, so set it up before going live. The vertical live feed is app-based and is not currently available on tablets.

Make the portrait version watchable
- Before starting the stream, open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and configure the vertical version as part of the dual-stream setup.
- Review the vertical preview. Choose a layout available to your stream, such as center crop, fit to phone width, or stacked.
- Check that faces, captions, text, and the main action remain visible in portrait. A horizontal composition may crop away the reason to watch.
- Start the stream only after confirming the vertical version is ready; it cannot be added once the broadcast has started.
Because viewers in vertical live cannot click links in chat or the channel description, make your call to action understandable inside the video. Say or show the channel name and explain what to do next rather than relying on a clickable link in that feed.
How to make Shorts that give viewers a reason to watch
A promotional Short should sell a specific moment, not merely announce that a stream exists. Choose a striking visual, useful process, recurring feature, scheduled guest, or upcoming event. State plainly that the channel has an ongoing live stream and, when relevant, when the featured segment will happen. This is practical creative guidance, not a ranking formula or a guarantee of reach.

For an upcoming event
- Create a concise teaser or trailer that names the event, its start time, and what viewers will see.
- Schedule the live event in YouTube and use its stream URL when sharing the announcement. YouTube recommends sharing the link at least 48 hours before an event.
- Make the destination and timing clear in the Short itself. A viewer should understand how to find the scheduled stream even if the Short does not provide a direct link to it.
- During the 24 hours before the scheduled start, viewers browsing Shorts may opt into notifications for that stream. Treat this as an option for planned programming, not an alert for a channel that is always live.
For a channel that is always live
- Feature a reason to tune in now: a segment currently underway, a regular programming moment, or a notable change in what is on screen.
- Keep the message accurate. If the Short promotes an upcoming segment, give its actual time; if the stream is continuously live, say so without implying that every moment is a special event.
- Use a spoken or on-screen call to action that names the channel and tells viewers how to find it. Do not promise that an ordinary Short automatically connects to the live stream.
Can I turn a live stream into a Short highlight?
YouTube documents a specific highlight workflow for certain mobile live streams. It is not a general guarantee for encoder-based or 24/7 broadcasts. To qualify, the stream must meet all of these conditions:
- It runs for at least 10 minutes and no more than 12 hours.
- It is vertical and streamed in the YouTube mobile app.
- It is not a screencast.
- Chat is enabled.
- It is not marked Made for Kids and meets YouTube’s safety standards.
If an eligible stream produces a highlight, check its visibility before expecting it to reach viewers: the saved highlight defaults to private. YouTube Help says setting a highlight to Public can increase its reach in the Shorts feed; that is platform guidance, not a guaranteed result. If your 24/7 stream uses an encoder or does not meet the listed criteria, make a separate promotional Short instead of assuming the mobile-live highlight option will apply.

How to tell whether Shorts are bringing viewers
Check YouTube Studio traffic sources for vertical live to see whether viewers are arriving through the vertical live feed. Compare the timing of a specific promotion or programming moment with your channel analytics, but do not treat timing alone as proof that a Short caused a visit. There is no supported universal conversion rate to apply to every channel; use your own analytics rather than promising a particular result.
Common problems and what to check
- Your stream does not appear in the Shorts browsing experience: Confirm that a vertical version was configured before the stream began. Vertical-live discovery can expose a stream to viewers, but does not guarantee placement.
- The portrait view cuts off important content: Review the vertical preview and change the layout or recompose the source so essential faces, text, and activity fit the phone-shaped frame.
- Viewers cannot open the link you posted in chat: Vertical-live viewers cannot click chat or channel-description links. Put the channel name and next action in the video itself.
- A live highlight is missing or cannot be made public: Check the mobile-app, vertical-format, duration, chat, screencast, Made for Kids, and safety criteria. The documented highlight workflow applies only when its requirements are met.
- Viewers did not receive an event notification: Shorts browsing offers an opt-in prompt for scheduled streams beginning within the next 24 hours; it is not an automatic notification to everyone who sees a Short.
