You can teach a class on YouTube Live with a webcam or phone, or use streaming software for a more involved production. Before class, confirm that your channel is eligible, choose who can view the stream, test your audio and connection, and decide how students will ask questions. If you plan to use captions or share a replay, test those workflows too.
Check that your channel can go live
YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. The creator must be at least 16. YouTube lists mobile, webcam, encoder, and console as available ways to stream; the options you can use depend on your setup and eligibility. See YouTube’s live-streaming overview.
Choose a way to teach
| Method | Best suited to | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Webcam on a computer | A straightforward lesson with a camera and microphone | Select and test the intended devices in the webcam workflow. |
| Mobile | A quick update or lesson from a phone | Check eligibility and test the phone’s audio, framing, and connection before class. |
| Encoder | A production that uses streaming software or a more involved setup | Configure the encoder and send captions through an eligible workflow if needed. YouTube’s computer tips name Wirecast as an example, not a requirement or endorsement. |
| Console | A stream produced from a supported console | Follow the console’s available YouTube streaming workflow. |
For a basic lesson, a computer webcam is often the simplest starting route. A separate webcam or microphone is optional if your computer’s built-in devices are suitable.
Set up a computer webcam lesson
- Sign in to the YouTube channel you intend to use and confirm it is enabled for live streaming.
- Open YouTube’s webcam streaming workflow in the live control room. Enter a clear title and description that tell students what the lesson covers.
- Choose the visibility setting for your intended audience before going live. Check the selected destination and audience carefully.
- Select the correct camera and microphone. Check the camera preview and listen to a short test recording or have a colleague confirm the sound.
- Start the stream when your equipment, lesson materials, and participation plan are ready. YouTube says webcam streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; verify the replay afterward rather than assuming it is ready to share.
YouTube’s interface and labels can change, so check the current Studio workflow before class. Its webcam instructions are at Create a live stream with a webcam.

Rehearse the network and production
YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth available beyond the total stream bitrate. This is YouTube’s operational recommendation, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming. The total bitrate must fit within the upload bandwidth available to the stream.
- Run a full test with the same computer, camera, microphone, software, and network you will use for class.
- Account for other people and devices sharing the connection; their uploads can affect the bandwidth available to your stream.
- Monitor picture and sound during the test and, where possible, during the lesson. A clear picture does not compensate for inaudible speech, so check audio separately.
- Have lesson materials and any backup way to communicate with students ready in case the stream is interrupted.

Choose visibility and protect student privacy
Set visibility to match your class audience. YouTube identifies private and unlisted settings as options for limiting who can see a personal stream; they are different from a public broadcast. Confirm the setting and destination before starting, and avoid saying or displaying personal information that students do not need to share.
YouTube says a stream featuring 13–15-year-olds without visible adult accompaniment may have live chat disabled, and the account may temporarily lose access to live chat or other features. Consider applicable school safeguarding and privacy requirements when planning a lesson, deciding whether students will appear or speak, and choosing whether to preserve a replay. See YouTube’s webcam streaming guidance.

Plan student questions and moderation
Decide before class whether students should ask questions in chat, use another school-approved channel, or watch without interacting. YouTube Live Chat is available on YouTube watch pages, not in embedded players. If your lesson is embedded on another site, students may need to open the watch page to use chat.
YouTube provides controls that can help manage chat, including assigning trusted moderators, holding potentially inappropriate messages, blocking words, slow mode, and subscriber-only chat. Choose controls to fit the class and its age group; no single setting suits every school. Review YouTube’s live chat moderation tools and live chat settings in advance.

Arrange captions before the lesson
Do not assume captions will appear automatically in every production setup. YouTube’s caption requirements say captions must be sent to the stream, either embedded in the video or through supported software that sends captions over HTTP POST. The described embedded 608/708 workflow currently supports one caption track. Caption options depend on the encoder and event configuration, so check the current Studio setup and test captions before students join. See YouTube’s live caption requirements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check and share a replay deliberately
YouTube may archive a live stream, and its webcam instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. After class, check whether the replay is available and review it before sharing. A lesson may contain student voices, names, or other personal details; choose carefully whether to share the replay and with whom. You can also decide whether a highlight or no replay is more appropriate.
