For a playlist of local video files, add OBS’s VLC Video source; Live Control Room does not select or order those files for you.
What each tool does
- OBS: Builds the program you send to YouTube. It plays your local lesson files and can combine them with a microphone, webcam, screen capture, or other sources.
- YouTube Live Control Room: Creates or schedules the YouTube event, provides the stream URL and key, shows the incoming encoder preview, and manages the live broadcast.
This walkthrough uses “OBS playlist” to mean a list of local media files played by OBS’s VLC Video source—not a YouTube playlist. OBS documents VLC Video as the playlist-capable source; the built-in Media Source is for a single file. VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to work. OBS Media Sources
Prepare the lesson playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed on the computer.
- Create a scene. In OBS, add a scene for the lesson broadcast, then add a VLC Video source to it.
- Add the lesson files. In the VLC Video source’s playlist controls, add the local video files in the order you want them played. Check the list before class; it is separate from any playlist on YouTube.
- Choose playback behavior. The documented VLC source defaults are loop playlist on and shuffle off. Confirm both controls match your intended lesson: leave shuffle off for a planned sequence, and turn looping off if the program should stop after the last lesson.
- Add optional sources. Add a microphone, webcam, display capture, or capture device if needed. OBS source order determines which visual sources appear above others. OBS’s Quick Start Guide says microphone and desktop audio are captured by default; review Settings > Audio if you need to change that. OBS Sources Guide · OBS Quick Start Guide
- Check the whole program. Play the playlist in OBS and confirm the lesson order, picture, and audio. YouTube recommends preparing and testing an encoder stream in advance and monitoring its preview. YouTube live streaming tips
Create the YouTube live event
You can start an encoder stream immediately or schedule it in advance. Scheduling is useful when you want an upcoming watch page to share, time for promotion, or viewer reminders; YouTube says viewers may opt in to reminders for scheduled streams. YouTube also documents reusing settings from a previous stream. Neither option changes how OBS chooses and plays the local lesson files.
Start an event now
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live.
- Configure the event details, such as its title, visibility, and other available settings, in Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event. Keep the key private; it authorizes an encoder to send a feed to your channel.
Schedule an event
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live, then open Manage and choose Schedule Stream.
- Set the event details and privacy, then schedule it. Share the upcoming event page if you want viewers to find it ahead of time.
- Copy the stream URL and key for the scheduled event so you can enter them in OBS.
YouTube’s encoder instructions and stream-setting guidance cover event setup and scheduling: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Manage live stream settings.

Connect OBS to Live Control Room and go live
- Enter the YouTube connection details in OBS. In OBS’s streaming settings, choose the YouTube service connection if it is available, or configure the server and stream key manually using the URL and key from Live Control Room. If configuring manually, use the RTMPS URL displayed there when your encoder supports RTMPS; YouTube describes RTMPS as an encrypted extension of RTMP. Do not substitute a guessed server address.
- Start streaming from OBS. This sends the composed program—including the VLC playlist—to YouTube. Starting the encoder feed is not the same as launching a scheduled event to viewers.
- Wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that YouTube receives the intended picture and sound. For a scheduled encoder stream, YouTube instructs you to click Go live in Live Control Room after the preview appears.
- Monitor the lesson. Keep OBS and Live Control Room available so you can check that the playlist is advancing and the YouTube preview remains healthy.
Choose latency for the kind of lesson
YouTube’s latency settings trade delay against playback buffering. If students need to ask questions and get a timely response, choose a setting suited to interaction; if the lesson is mainly one-way playback, a longer delay may be acceptable. The available settings and labels can change, so choose from the options shown for the event in Live Control Room. YouTube: Manage live stream settings
Protect the stream key
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not share one publicly or include it in a lesson recording. If you believe it has been exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room; editors and viewers cannot. After resetting, update OBS with the new key before reconnecting. End the broadcast and find its archive
When teaching is finished, stop sending content from OBS, then use End Stream in Live Control Room for the scheduled encoder workflow. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived and accessible from the Live tab in Studio. That archive guidance applies to streams under the stated threshold, not to every possible broadcast length. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
Troubleshooting common problems
- VLC Video is unavailable or will not play a playlist: Install VLC, then reopen or reconfigure the source in OBS. Use VLC Video for a list of files; the built-in Media Source is intended for a single media file. OBS Media Sources
- Lessons play in the wrong order or repeat unexpectedly: Check the VLC Video source’s playlist order, shuffle, and loop controls. The documented defaults are shuffle off and loop on.
- YouTube does not show an encoder preview: Confirm OBS is streaming and that its stream URL and key match the event open in Live Control Room. If you entered a manual server address, use the URL displayed by YouTube rather than an assumed one.
- A scheduled stream is not visible to viewers: Starting the feed in OBS only sends the encoder signal. Wait for the Live Control Room preview, then select Go live for the scheduled event.
- The picture appears but lesson audio is missing: Check OBS’s audio meters and the source’s audio configuration, then review Settings > Audio for microphone and desktop-audio settings.
- The stream key may have been exposed: Ask a channel owner or manager to reset it in Live Control Room, then replace the saved key in OBS before streaming again.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a prerecorded lesson or other uploaded video to keep looping on YouTube without leaving OBS or a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
