Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse a YouTube Clip to share a short moment that points back to its source video, and use a YouTube Studio highlight when you want a separately edited video with its own title and privacy settings. For promotion, prepare the event link in advance, mark strong moments while live, and publish or organize highlights after the stream. A Clip made from a live stream may not work until the broadcast ends and its archive is available.
Choose the right format for the moment
| Format | What viewers get | When it is available | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Clip | A 5–60-second segment that loops from the original video’s watch page. Viewers need access to the source video. | For livestreams, availability can wait until the stream ends and uploads; DVR settings and the DVR window can limit playback. | Quickly sharing a source moment by link, social platform, email, or embed. |
| Studio highlight | A trimmed video created in YouTube Studio, with a title, privacy setting, and description you choose. | Can be created during or after a stream. YouTube’s highlight help does not specify a fixed duration. | Publishing an edited moment as a video asset rather than a segment attached to the source. |
| Short highlight from a mobile livestream | A Short made from a qualifying mobile livestream; it saves as private by default. | Only when the stream meets YouTube’s stated eligibility conditions. | Repurposing an eligible mobile broadcast for Shorts discovery after changing its visibility if you want it public. |
| Video Clips & Shorts Studio tool | A new video or Short draft made from an existing long-form video, using transcript selection, timestamps, or AI suggestions where available. | Through the Studio creation workflow. | Making a distinct upload or draft from an existing video, not sharing a viewer Clip that loops from the source. |
YouTube describes Clips as segments “between 5-60 seconds long” that play on a loop from the original video’s watch page. A highlight is a different Studio editing workflow, so do not assume its length is limited to the Clip range.
Prepare the live stream promotion
- Schedule or prepare the event. YouTube recommends sharing the stream link at least 48 hours before going live. Include the URL in your announcements; YouTube also suggests connecting social accounts and embedding the event URL on a website. See YouTube’s live-stream promotion guidance.
- Tell people what the preview is about. In your own promotional copy, explain what the stream will cover and when it starts, then link directly to the scheduled event. This sets expectations; it does not guarantee more views.
- Check livestream eligibility if you are new to going live. YouTube says a creator needs a verified channel with no livestream restriction in the preceding 90 days, and users must be at least 16 to livestream. Confirm the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility help.
Capture promising moments while you are live
- Watch for a self-contained moment. A useful preview gives viewers enough context to understand why the moment matters, without giving away everything they might want to see in the full event.
- Add a stream marker in YouTube Studio when your workflow allows. Markers make potential highlight moments easier to find later. Follow YouTube’s highlight instructions for the Studio controls available to you.
- Create and share an available highlight or clip with context. YouTube’s promotion guidance recommends creating highlight clips during an event. But a viewer-style Clip from a livestream may not play immediately: it can depend on the stream ending and its upload, as well as DVR availability. If the Clip is not ready, do not present it as a real-time preview; share the scheduled stream link or a highlight that is available instead.
Create a Clip from the stream archive
- Open the eligible archived video while signed in to YouTube.
- Choose More → Clip.
- Give the Clip a title of up to 140 characters, then adjust the selected segment to between 5 and 60 seconds.
- Share it using the available options, such as a copied link, social sharing, email, or embed. Add a sentence explaining the event and link viewers to the full stream or archive where appropriate.
On mobile, the YouTube app’s Clip option opens a selection slider and sharing options. For full details on Clip controls and availability, see YouTube’s Clips help.
Make a Studio highlight during or after the event
- In YouTube Studio, open the live stream workflow and locate the marked moment you want to use.
- Choose the highlight-creation or editing workflow, then trim the segment.
- Set its title, privacy, and description, and publish it when it is ready. You can create a highlight during or after the stream.
- For an existing long-form video, Studio’s Video Clips & Shorts tools may offer transcript selection, timestamps, or AI suggestions where available. This creates a separate video or Short draft; it is not the same as a viewer Clip tied to the source watch page. See YouTube’s Studio Clips and Shorts help.
Know when a livestream Short highlight qualifies
YouTube’s Short highlight option applies to specific mobile livestreams. The stream must be 10 minutes to 12 hours long, vertical, streamed using the YouTube mobile app, have chat enabled, not be Made for Kids, and meet YouTube’s safety standards. A saved highlight defaults to private; change its visibility to public if you want it to be publicly discoverable. These conditions are specific to this mobile-stream feature, not general requirements for making a Clip or Studio highlight. See YouTube’s promotion help.

Publish and organize the material after the stream
- Review the archive and create a Studio highlight for moments that work as edited videos.
- Create source-linked Clips from the archive when a short, shareable segment is the better fit.
- Keep the source video available to the audience you want to reach. Clips can stop working if the original is deleted, made private, or removed for a Community Guidelines violation; viewers also need permission to watch the source.
- Organize the archive and highlights into playlists so viewers can find related material. YouTube recommends public archives for future reach, subject to the creator’s privacy and rights choices.
- Review Clips made from your videos in the Clips library or Studio, where you can also inspect views and other performance details.
Fix common Clip and highlight problems
| What you see | Likely reason | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A live-stream Clip does not play or is unavailable during the broadcast. | The stream may need to end and upload first, or the relevant segment may fall outside the available DVR window. Streams without DVR have availability limitations. | Wait for the archive to be available and try again; if the segment is outside the DVR window, use an available Studio highlight or another moment. |
| A viewer cannot open your Clip. | The viewer may not have access to the source, or the source may have been deleted, made private, or removed for a policy violation. | Check the original video’s availability and privacy, and share the source with the intended audience. |
| You cannot find the Clip option. | The video or channel may not have the relevant Clip option available, or viewer clipping may be turned off in Studio settings. | Check the video’s available actions and your Studio clipping settings; use a Studio highlight workflow if appropriate. |
| Your mobile-stream Short highlight is private. | Private is the default visibility for a saved highlight. | Review the Short’s visibility in Studio and change it to public if that is your intent. |
| A marker or highlight is hard to locate. | The moment may not have been marked during the stream, or you may be looking in the Clip workflow instead of the Studio highlight workflow. | Use Studio’s stream and highlight controls, then review the archive to locate and trim the moment. |
Use stream moments responsibly
Only share material you have the right to publish, and consider whether the segment includes copyrighted music, footage, or other material you are not authorized to use. A Clip remains tied to its source, so its availability and audience are affected by the source video’s privacy and moderation status. Do not promise viewers that a preview will increase attendance; YouTube’s guidance offers promotion practices, not a quantified guarantee of audience growth.
