DroidDeck can turn a compatible Android phone into a local Steam gaming handheld. It installs an Arm64 Steam client, presents Steam in Big Picture mode, and uses Valve’s ARM64 Proton to run compatible Windows games on the phone itself. This is different from Steam Link or another streaming app: the phone runs Steam and Proton locally, so you need a supported GPU, several gigabytes of free storage, and a controller or touch-control setup that suits the games you want to play.
The most important check comes before installation. DroidDeck requires Android 9 or newer and officially lists Qualcomm Adreno 730-or-newer and Adreno 8xx graphics as supported. Adreno 6xx devices are experimental, while Mali, Xclipse, PowerVR, and Adreno 710 graphics are unsupported. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee that every Steam game will launch or run well.
What DroidDeck does on an Android phone
DroidDeck is an open-source Android app designed to bring the SteamOS-style experience to Android. Its workflow is local: the app runs an Arm64 Steam client in Big Picture mode and uses Valve’s ARM64 Proton compatibility layer for Windows games. Your phone is therefore acting more like a small Linux gaming computer than a remote display for a PC.

Check whether your phone is compatible
Check the Android version and GPU family before downloading the APK. The GPU requirement is just as important as the Android requirement; a recent Android release cannot make an unsupported graphics family compatible.
| Phone requirement | Status in DroidDeck documentation | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Android 9 or newer | Required | Phones running an older Android release do not meet the documented minimum. |
| Adreno 730 or newer | Supported | The primary supported class listed by the project. |
| Adreno 8xx | Supported | Listed as supported, subject to normal game and driver variation. |
| Adreno 6xx | Experimental | Some games may work. DirectX 11 may run, but DirectX 12 games can still crash. |
| Adreno 710 | Unsupported | It is not an eligible GPU under the published requirements. |
| Mali, Xclipse, or PowerVR | Unsupported | These GPU families are not listed as supported. |
| Root access | Not required | You can use DroidDeck on an unrooted phone. |
To identify the GPU, check your phone manufacturer’s specifications or use a reputable hardware-information utility already available on your device. Confirm the exact GPU model rather than relying on a phone series name. A model sold in different regions can use different hardware, and two phones with the same Android version can have very different graphics support.
Prepare storage, power, and controls
Reserve enough storage
DroidDeck’s installation guidance calls for about 3 GB for the runtime and about 1.1 GB more for the desktop and emulators. Those figures cover the environment, not your games. Leave additional room for the Steam client to download files, Proton components, shader or configuration data where applicable, and the games themselves.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Keep more free space than the nominal download size of a game. Steam may need temporary working space while installing or updating, and a nearly full Android device can fail even when the displayed game size appears to fit. If your phone has removable storage, verify that the relevant Android and Steam components can use it; do not assume every part of the runtime can be moved.

Use stable power and cooling
The first setup downloads and configures a Linux runtime and Steam files, so use a reliable Wi-Fi connection and connect the phone to power if the process is lengthy. Local PC-game execution can sustain a high load. A case, warm room, or charging session can raise temperatures and cause the phone to reduce clock speeds, so remove a thick case or pause to cool the device if performance changes after extended play.
Choose how you will control games
A controller is optional, but the installation documentation notes that it makes most PC games playable. Touch controls and Steam-style controller input are available, yet games designed around a keyboard, mouse, or gamepad can be awkward on a bare touchscreen.
A USB-C Android game controller keeps physical controls attached to the phone-based setup. Before buying one, check that its USB-C plug fits your phone, that your case does not block the connector, and that the controller supports your Android version. Bluetooth or other input devices can also work when recognized by Android and Steam, but the exact behavior depends on the device and game.
Install DroidDeck safely
Use the project’s official Droid-Deck/DroidDeck GitHub Releases page and select the APK from the release assets. The project warns that it does not operate a separate stand-alone download website. Avoid APK mirrors or pages claiming to be the DroidDeck team; an unofficial package can be modified, outdated, or unrelated to the project.

- Check the requirements. Confirm Android 9 or newer, verify the GPU family, and free at least about 4.1 GB for the documented runtime, desktop, and emulator components before accounting for games.
- Download the release APK. Open the project’s GitHub Releases page and choose the APK attached to the release. Do not download an installer from an unrelated site.
- Allow installation from that source when Android asks. Android may block an APK opened from a browser or file manager. Follow the system prompt to allow that source to install apps, then return to the installer. You can revoke the permission afterward in Android settings if you do not want to leave it enabled.
- Install and open DroidDeck. Launch the app after Android completes the package installation.
- Run Setup. Use DroidDeck’s Setup flow to install the Linux runtime and any missing components. Keep the app open and the phone connected to a dependable network while files are downloaded and configured.
- Address Android 12 or newer restrictions. If your phone exposes the relevant developer option, enable the setting that disables child-process restrictions. The wording and location can vary by Android build; look in Android’s Developer options. If the option is not available, use DroidDeck’s “Fix it for me” flow when the app offers it.
- Press “Play Steam.” The first launch can take time because Steam downloads and configures additional files. A delayed first launch is not automatically a crash.
- Sign in to Steam. Use the account that owns the games you intend to install. Complete any normal Steam sign-in or security verification shown in the client.
Fix Steam crashes on Android 12 and newer
Android 12 introduced process restrictions that can interfere with DroidDeck’s Steam startup on some devices. If Steam closes during launch or DroidDeck reports a child-process problem, address that setting before repeatedly reinstalling the app.
- Open Android Settings and enter Developer options. If Developer options are hidden, enable them using your phone maker’s normal Android procedure.
- Look for the DroidDeck-documented option to disable child-process restrictions and enable it if your build provides it. Android manufacturers do not all expose the same toggle, so the label may differ or the option may be absent.
- Return to DroidDeck and try Play Steam again.
- If the setting is unavailable, run DroidDeck’s Fix it for me flow when shown, then retry the launch.
- If the problem continues, verify that the phone’s GPU is in a supported class, that Setup completed, and that sufficient storage remains. An unsupported GPU or an incomplete runtime cannot be repaired by the Android 12 toggle.
Do not treat an Android 12 launch fix as a guarantee of game compatibility. It addresses a process-startup problem; individual games can still fail because of their graphics API, Proton behavior, drivers, or hardware limits.
Launch Steam and install games
After Steam opens, use its Big Picture interface to browse your library and install a game. Installation is the same basic sequence as on a PC: select a title, choose an install location if DroidDeck presents one, confirm the download, and wait for Steam to finish unpacking and configuring the files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesInstall one title first as a sanity check rather than filling the phone immediately. Choose a game whose controls and graphics requirements are modest, confirm that it launches, and then expand your library. This isolates storage, runtime, and controller problems before you have several large downloads to troubleshoot.

Remember that owning a Windows game does not mean it will run on Android. DroidDeck uses ARM64 Proton to translate and run compatible Windows software, but compatibility varies by game and by the phone’s GPU and drivers. Some games require graphics features or launchers that do not work in this environment.
Understand performance and compatibility limits
Supported hardware is only the starting point
Adreno 730-or-newer and Adreno 8xx phones satisfy the published GPU category, but they are not identical. Sustained performance, cooling, system memory, Android firmware, and driver revisions differ between devices. Two supported phones can therefore deliver different results in the same game.
Experimental Adreno 6xx behavior
Adreno 6xx support is experimental. The project documentation indicates that DirectX 11 may run on these devices, while DirectX 12 games can still crash. Treat an Adreno 6xx phone as a trial platform: test the games you care about and keep expectations lower than they would be for a fully supported GPU.
Unsupported GPU families
Mali, Xclipse, PowerVR, and Adreno 710 are listed as unsupported. Installing the APK on one of these phones may not produce a usable Steam environment, and changing game settings cannot turn an unsupported graphics stack into a supported one. If your phone falls into this category, a streaming solution or a different Android device is a more realistic path.

Why no universal frame-rate number exists
There is no independent, general-purpose frame-rate statistic that can be applied across Android phones and Steam games. Results depend on the exact device and title, so a hands-on result from one phone and one game should not be generalized to your setup. Watch for heat-related slowdowns, crashes tied to a particular DirectX version, and games that require precise mouse or keyboard input.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.DroidDeck versus streaming alternatives
The choice is primarily between local execution and streaming. Use the following distinctions to decide which model fits your phone and network.
| Factor | DroidDeck | Steam Link or cloud-style streaming |
|---|---|---|
| Where the game runs | On the Android phone through the local Steam and Proton environment. | On another computer or a remote server; the phone receives a video stream and sends input. |
| Phone storage | About 3 GB for the runtime, about 1.1 GB for desktop and emulators, plus the game and working space. | Usually does not require the full game installation on the phone, although the streaming app and caches still use some storage. |
| Network dependence during play | Not inherently dependent on a network after the game and required components are installed, although Steam features and updates may still need connectivity. | Requires a suitable connection to the host PC or service, with latency and bandwidth affecting play. |
| Hardware dependency | Requires Android 9 or newer and a supported Adreno GPU category; unsupported families are excluded. | The phone mainly needs to decode the stream and handle input, while the host supplies game-rendering hardware. |
| Controller support | Touch controls and Steam-style input are documented; a physical controller is optional but useful. | Controller and touch support depend on the streaming app, host, and game. |
| Root access | Not required. | Normally not required for the streaming model. |
| Game compatibility | Depends on ARM64 Proton, the title, graphics API, drivers, and phone hardware. | Primarily depends on whether the host or cloud service can run the game; stream quality adds another variable. |
DroidDeck is the better fit when you want the phone to operate independently and have a supported Adreno device with enough storage. Streaming is more practical when your phone has an unsupported GPU, you want to avoid storing large games locally, or you already have a capable host computer and reliable network.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
The APK will not install
- Confirm that you downloaded an APK from the project’s GitHub release assets, not a similarly named third-party page.
- Use Android’s prompt to allow installation from the browser or file manager that opened the APK.
- Check free storage and remove the permission again after installation if desired.
Setup stops or components are missing
- Free additional space beyond the documented approximately 4.1 GB environment requirement so downloads can unpack safely.
- Reconnect to a stable network and run Setup again.
- Do not assume the game files alone are sufficient; the Linux runtime, desktop, emulators, and Steam components must also be installed.
Steam opens but a game crashes
- Confirm the phone is not using an unsupported GPU family.
- If it is an Adreno 6xx phone, treat DirectX 12 failure as a known limitation and test whether the game offers a DirectX 11 mode.
- Try a different, less demanding title to distinguish a game-specific issue from a broken installation.
- Check temperature and available storage before repeating the installation.
Touch controls are unusable
- Use Steam’s controller and touch-control options documented by DroidDeck.
- Pair or connect a physical controller and verify Android recognizes it before launching the game.
- For a USB-C Android game controller, check connector fit and case clearance if inputs do not register.
Maintain the installation
DroidDeck is actively changing, so check the project’s current GitHub requirements and latest release whenever you install or update it. Requirements, supported devices, and workarounds can change as the Android app, Steam client, Proton components, and phone drivers evolve.
Keep a record of the release APK you installed and avoid mixing files from unofficial sources. Before a major update, make sure you have enough free storage for both the download and temporary extraction. If an update introduces a new startup problem, revisit the Android 12 child-process setting, rerun Setup, and confirm that the phone still meets the current GPU requirements.
Is your phone a good DroidDeck candidate?
- Good candidate: Android 9 or newer, Adreno 730-or-newer or Adreno 8xx graphics, ample free storage, and willingness to use a controller for games designed around physical input.
- Experimental candidate: Adreno 6xx graphics, especially if your library is mostly DirectX 11 titles and you accept that DirectX 12 games can crash.
- Poor candidate: Mali, Xclipse, PowerVR, or Adreno 710 graphics, or a phone without enough room for the runtime and games.
- Choose streaming instead: You want to avoid local game storage, your GPU is unsupported, or you already have a suitable host computer and dependable network.
When the hardware fits, DroidDeck gives you a phone-based Steam interface without root access and without requiring a separate handheld. The trade-off is hands-on setup, substantial storage use, selective game compatibility, and performance that must be judged on the exact phone and game rather than by a single advertised frame-rate figure.
