Pair your Bluetooth controller with the phone, tablet, or computer you’ll use to play. Then open the Xbox app or go to Xbox.com/play, sign in, and launch a game that supports cloud play. You’ll also need a supported device, an eligible Game Pass plan, and a reliable internet connection.
Before you start
- A Bluetooth-capable controller: Most cloud games use a gamepad, though some titles offer touch controls. Xbox lists official and third-party controllers, but compatibility depends on the exact model. Check Xbox’s tested-controller list before buying or troubleshooting.
- A supported device and Game Pass plan: Xbox’s December 19, 2025 guide lists Game Pass Essential, Premium, and Ultimate for cloud gaming. Plans, regions, and game availability can change, so check Xbox’s current Game Pass information and supported-region details.
- A stable internet connection: Xbox recommends at least 20 Mbps. That is guidance, not a guarantee of smooth play or low latency.
Pair the controller and start a cloud game
- Put the controller in pairing mode. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions; the process differs among controller generations and third-party models.
- Pair it in your device’s Bluetooth settings. Open Bluetooth settings on the phone, tablet, or computer, select the controller when it appears, and complete any on-screen prompt.
- Open Xbox Cloud Gaming. Use the Xbox app on a supported device, or open a supported browser and visit Xbox.com/play. Sign in with your Xbox account.
- Choose a cloud-playable title. Start a game from the cloud catalog and check its control options. Most titles need a gamepad; selected games support touch controls. Catalog and platform availability can vary by region and plan.
Check whether your device is supported
Xbox’s December 2025 guide gives these operating-system examples: Windows 10 version 20H2 or later, macOS 14.1.2 or later, ChromeOS 85 or later, Android 12 or later, iOS 14.4 or later, and iPadOS 14.4 or later. These examples do not mean every device running those versions is compatible; consult Xbox’s device-specific support information. The guide also covers some consoles, handhelds, smart TVs, streaming devices, and Meta Quest models.
Xbox recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi or 5G on capable devices, and prefers wired Ethernet where available. On a dual-band Wi-Fi network, make sure the device is actually using the 5 GHz band. The Xbox mobile FAQ also recommends 20 Mbps or higher for Wi-Fi or mobile data. A faster connection alone cannot ensure a good experience if the network is unstable.
If the controller connects but does not work in-game
- Verify the exact model. Check Xbox’s current tested-controller list; a Bluetooth connection by itself does not establish that a controller is supported for cloud gaming.
- Reconnect it. Disconnect or remove the controller in your device’s Bluetooth settings, then pair it again and relaunch the game.
- Try wired play if available. If both the controller and host device support a wired connection, use it as a diagnostic alternative.
- Check the network separately. If controls respond but gameplay lags or drops, test on a stable connection and try Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi where practical.
Some Xbox controllers have model- and firmware-specific Bluetooth features. In a 2021 Xbox Wire update, Microsoft said Bluetooth-capable Xbox One controllers, Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, and Xbox Adaptive Controllers could support Bluetooth Low Energy across Windows 10 PCs, iOS 15 or later, and Android after a specified firmware update. The update also described remembering one Bluetooth host and one Xbox Wireless host. This is historical guidance for those models and firmware—not a universal setup requirement for every controller.

Choosing a controller
Xbox names official Xbox controllers and options from 8BitDo, GameSir, Backbone, and Sony among examples. Those manufacturer names do not establish that every model is compatible, so check the exact model against the current tested list. Compare Bluetooth support for your particular phone, tablet, or computer, whether wired play is available as a fallback, and practical factors such as comfort and portability. The available Xbox guidance does not rank these brands by speed or reliability.
