To send a continuously running source through Wowza Streaming Engine to YouTube, create a YouTube Live event, configure a YouTube Live stream target in a Streaming Engine Live application, and send the source to that target over RTMP. If the source needs format conversion or multiple bitrate outputs, enable the Engine Transcoder, choose a suitable template, and restart the application. Wowza Video uses a separate workflow: its documentation says YouTube performs the transcoding. Neither setup, by itself, guarantees uninterrupted availability.
Choose the Wowza product first
Wowza Streaming Engine and Wowza Video are different products with different YouTube workflows. In Streaming Engine, you configure an application and a stream target; its Transcoder can process the incoming source. In Wowza Video, you configure a YouTube target for an output rendition, and Wowza’s guide says YouTube performs the transcoding.

The instructions below cover both paths. Follow the section for the product you actually use; do not treat the two procedures as interchangeable.
Prepare the source and YouTube event
Check what your source sends
Before choosing a Transcoder template, identify the source’s video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval. Wowza distinguishes transcoding from transrating: its guide describes Transcode for inputs that are not H.264 video and/or AAC or MP3 audio, and Transrate for compatible H.264 plus AAC or MP3 inputs when producing keyframe-aligned bitrate variants. The right option depends on the actual input and the output you need.

The source must include audio, according to Wowza’s Streaming Engine YouTube guide. If your feed is intended to be silent, confirm the supported configuration in the relevant product documentation rather than assuming a video-only input will work.
Create or select a YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, create a live stream or choose the event you intend to use.
- Copy the event’s Stream URL and Stream key from its streaming settings. Keep the key private: it authorizes publishing to that event.
- Use YouTube’s current encoder settings for the event. Wowza’s Video guide reproduces a maximum resolution of 2160 (3840 × 2160) at 60 fps and calls for a keyframe at least every two seconds and no more than four seconds apart. Wowza warns that YouTube’s requirements can change, so check the current YouTube guidance before configuring an encoder.
Configure YouTube output in Wowza Streaming Engine
- In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, open or create the Live application that receives your encoder’s source.
- Open the application’s Stream Targets settings and add a YouTube Live target.
- Enter the YouTube destination details based on the Stream URL and key from Studio. Set the destination application and host as required by the target configuration, and select the incoming Source Stream Name to send.
- Use RTMP for the destination protocol, as specified in Wowza’s YouTube guide. Verify the target details carefully; a wrong host, application, stream name, or key can prevent the target from connecting.
- Save the target configuration. If you need transcoding, configure the Transcoder before relying on the output, as described below.
Enable and configure the Streaming Engine Transcoder
- In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, open the Live application and enable the Transcoder for that application.
- Select a template appropriate to the source and required outputs. Choose Transcode when input codecs need conversion; choose a Transrate approach for compatible H.264 video with AAC or MP3 audio when you need multiple bitrate variants.
- Review the template’s output presets and encoding parameters against YouTube’s current requirements and the quality and bandwidth your source can sustain. Do not choose a template based only on the desired output resolution; the input codecs and available upstream capacity matter too.
- Restart the application for the Transcoder change to take effect. Wowza’s live Transcoder guide specifies an application restart after enabling it.
- Start the source encoder, then check the incoming stream and target status in Wowza Manager. Open YouTube Live Control Room and verify that its preview shows both video and audio before treating the path as ready.
Wowza’s Transcoder guide describes a maximum of 10 concurrent transcoded channels per instance per month in its documented context. This is a product limit, not a general performance guarantee; confirm the current license and account limits with Wowza for your deployment.

Use the separate Wowza Video workflow
- Create or choose a Wowza Video live stream and select its output rendition.
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the destination event and copy its Stream URL and Stream key.
- Configure the Wowza Video YouTube target with those YouTube destination details and the selected output rendition.
- Start the Wowza workflow and confirm the incoming preview in YouTube Live Control Room, including audio.
For this workflow, Wowza’s documentation says YouTube—not Wowza Video—performs the stream transcoding. Do not apply the Streaming Engine Transcoder instructions to a Wowza Video target.
What 24×7 means in Wowza Video
Wowza Video’s 24×7 billing mode is intended for an always-on channel. Its setup documentation says the channel runs until it is manually or schedule-stopped rather than stopping automatically after a 20-minute transcoder idle period. The mode has important constraints:

- 24×7 streams cannot be recorded and do not support 4K.
- Billing mode and stream type are locked after stream creation, so select them carefully.
- Passthrough sends one rendition matching the source’s video and audio bitrate, H.264 profile, frame rate, aspect ratio, and keyframe interval. It requires a 24×7 subscription, is unavailable in some broadcast locations, and is not 4K.
These are Wowza Video-specific conditions; they should not be generalized to every Streaming Engine deployment. The reviewed setup documentation does not establish continuous YouTube availability for either product.
Test the full path before leaving it unattended
- Wowza receives the source: confirm the incoming stream is active in Wowza Manager.
- The target connects: check the YouTube stream target status in Wowza rather than relying only on the source encoder’s local status.
- YouTube receives picture and sound: verify the Live Control Room preview and audio before considering the configuration ready.
- Long-running operation is planned: confirm the source, network, licensing, and any scheduling or restart arrangements for your own deployment. A 24/7 goal is an operational plan, not an uptime promise established by these setup steps.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
YouTube does not show a preview
- Check that the source is active in Wowza Manager, then check the target status. This separates an ingest problem from a destination problem.
- Recheck the YouTube Stream URL, destination host/application, stream key, and selected Source Stream Name. Correct any mismatch and restart or reconnect the target as appropriate.
- Confirm the YouTube event is the intended one and is ready to receive the feed.
Video appears, but audio is missing
Wowza’s Engine guide says the stream must include audio. Check that the source actually carries an audio track and that the selected template preserves or encodes it in a format supported by the destination.

The Transcoder output is wrong or does not start
- Inspect the actual input codecs before changing templates. The Transcode and Transrate paths are meant for different input conditions.
- Confirm that the Transcoder is enabled on the correct Live application and that the application was restarted after the change.
- Check whether the output presets match the intended rendition and YouTube’s current encoder requirements.
A Wowza Video 24×7 option is unavailable or unsuitable
Check the chosen billing mode and broadcast location, and account for the no-recording and no-4K constraints. Passthrough has its own location and subscription requirements and produces a single source-matched rendition.
