Use the official wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6 package for your operating system and architecture, then verify that the executable reports a patched Qt build: wkhtmltopdf --version. A basic conversion is wkhtmltopdf input.html output.pdf. Put global options before document objects, keep object-specific options with their object, and leave the output filename last.
wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6 is the project’s stable series, released June 11, 2020. Its patched-Qt builds provide capabilities that an unpatched distribution build may lack, so the version check matters before you troubleshoot layout, headers, footers, or other advanced behavior.
What “patched Qt” means in wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6
wkhtmltopdf renders HTML with Qt WebKit and writes a PDF. The project maintains builds with a patched version of Qt because some renderer features are not present in upstream Qt. An executable compiled without those patches can therefore behave differently or silently lack options documented for the patched build.
Download a package matching the target operating system and CPU architecture. The project publishes packages for Windows, macOS, and selected Debian distributions and architectures; that list is not a promise that one binary works on every Linux distribution. Even a static package can require system libraries other than Qt.

Verify the executable before converting
- Install the package on the machine that will perform the conversion.
- Run
wkhtmltopdf --version. - Confirm that the output identifies version
0.12.6and says it was built with patched Qt. - If it only reports an unpatched build, replace it with the appropriate official package rather than assuming every manual option will work.
Run this check on the actual production platform. Package compatibility and availability can change, and the project repository is archived read-only, so test the exact binary, libraries, fonts, and operating-system image you intend to maintain.
The command structure and option scope
The documented synopsis is:
wkhtmltopdf [GLOBAL OPTION]... [OBJECT]... <output file>
An object is a normal page, a cover, or a table of contents. Objects appear in the PDF in command-line order. Options that affect the whole job belong before the objects; options that affect one page or object follow that object’s input. The 0.12.6 usage guide identifies the exact scope of each option, so consult it when an option appears to be ignored.
One HTML file
wkhtmltopdf input.html output.pdf
A web URL
wkhtmltopdf https://example.com/ output.pdf
Several page objects
wkhtmltopdf
https://example.com/cover.html cover.pdf
https://example.com/report.html report.pdf
For a multi-object document, place each input and its object-specific options together, in the order you want them rendered. The final argument is the output PDF.
A practical 0.12.6 workflow
1. Prepare deterministic HTML
Use absolute URLs for remote assets when possible. For local assets, keep the HTML, stylesheets, images, fonts, and scripts in a controlled directory and confirm that the conversion process has permission to read them. Record the package version, operating system, and fonts used when you need reproducible output.
2. Start with a minimal conversion
wkhtmltopdf input.html output.pdf
Open the resulting file and check page count, images, fonts, links, margins, and page breaks before adding advanced flags. This separates an input or installation problem from a layout-option problem.
3. Add layout settings deliberately
Typical adjustments include paper size, orientation, margins, headers and footers, and page-level rendering settings. Keep global settings before the first object and page-specific settings after the relevant input. If a documented setting is marked as requiring patched Qt, it will not work as documented with an unpatched distribution executable.

4. Add covers and a table of contents when needed
wkhtmltopdf
cover cover.html
toc
chapter-1.html
chapter-2.html
book.pdf
A cover object creates a cover page that is excluded from the table of contents and does not receive headers or footers. A toc object inserts a generated table of contents. The table of contents is produced through XSLT; the usage guide documents how to inspect or customize its stylesheet and outline. Put the objects in the order in which they should appear.
Local files and the 0.12.6 access change
wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6 blocks local filesystem access by default. A conversion can therefore produce a PDF while omitting a local image, stylesheet, font, or other resource. Check this specifically when a file works in a browser but not in wkhtmltopdf.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSafe diagnostic sequence
- Confirm the resource path is correct and readable by the conversion user.
- Prefer a controlled project directory and explicit, predictable paths.
- Review the 0.12.6 usage guide for the local-file-access option and enable access only for trusted input that genuinely needs it.
- Repeat the conversion and inspect the generated PDF.
Local-file access has security consequences: a renderer allowed to read local paths may expose files that the conversion process can access. Do not enable it globally just to make an unknown document render.
Security requirements for production use
The project warns: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server it is running on!” Treat HTML and JavaScript supplied by users as hostile.
- Sanitize and validate HTML before conversion.
- Run the renderer with the least filesystem and network privilege possible.
- Do not expose secrets, credentials, internal services, or sensitive files to the rendering process.
- Use an isolated worker or container where practical, with resource and time limits.
- Review whether JavaScript is necessary for each input and restrict access to local files unless required.
The 0.12.6 release dates from 2020 and the repository is archived read-only. That does not automatically make every deployment unsafe, but it does mean you should evaluate its legacy WebKit behavior, patching expectations, and compatibility against your current security policy before making it a new production dependency.
Troubleshooting common failures
The version does not say patched Qt
Cause: a distribution package or another executable earlier in PATH is being used. Fix: install the matching official package, run the executable by its full path, and repeat wkhtmltopdf --version.

Images or CSS disappear from a local document
Cause: local filesystem access is blocked by default in 0.12.6, or the process cannot read the path. Fix: verify permissions and paths, then enable the documented local-access option only for trusted input.
A patched-only option is ignored or rejected
Cause: the binary is unpatched, or the option is placed in the wrong scope. Fix: verify the version output, check whether the option is global or object-specific, and move it before the object or after its input as the usage guide specifies.
The PDF is blank or incomplete
Cause: the page depends on unavailable resources, JavaScript that has not finished, a blocked local file, or a network failure. Fix: test the URL from the conversion host, make asset URLs deterministic, confirm permissions, and reduce the input to a minimal page to identify the failing dependency.
The command reports missing libraries on Linux
Cause: a static package still depends on system packages beyond Qt, or the distribution is outside the package’s compatibility range. Fix: install the required system libraries for that package or choose a build matching the target distribution and architecture; do not assume “static” means self-contained.

One-click scans. No signup required.
The table of contents is wrong
Cause: headings are not exposed as expected, object order is wrong, or the TOC stylesheet needs adjustment. Fix: confirm the document order, inspect the generated outline, and customize the XSLT stylesheet using the documented TOC instructions.

There is no single speed or compatibility figure established for all 0.12.6 environments. Rendering time depends on the page, network resources, JavaScript, fonts, operating system, and available libraries. Measure representative documents on the machine that will run the job rather than relying on a benchmark from another build.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6 work with every Linux distribution?
No. The project lists selected Debian distributions and architectures, and even static packages can need additional system libraries. Match the package to the target system and test that exact environment.
Why does my browser show local images that wkhtmltopdf omits?
Version 0.12.6 blocks local filesystem access by default. Check paths and permissions, then enable the documented local-access option only for trusted input that requires it.
Can I safely convert HTML submitted by users?
Not without sanitization and isolation. The project warns that untrusted HTML and JavaScript can lead to complete server takeover.
