You can edit a CSV in VS Code either as literal text or in a table-oriented view with Microsoft’s Data Wrangler extension. Use the text editor for precise changes to the file’s actual characters; use Data Wrangler when seeing rows and columns makes cleaning easier. Before a significant edit, make a copy or versioned backup. When Excel is involved, import sensitive columns as text and check the result: CSV is plain text, but Excel may infer types and alter how values are read.
Choose the right way to edit the CSV

Neither approach removes the need to verify the saved file. A CSV stores delimited text; it does not preserve all the workbook features Excel can hold.
Before editing, make a safe working copy
- Duplicate or version the original. Keep an untouched copy so you can compare or recover if a bulk edit changes more than intended.
- Open the working copy in VS Code. Open the folder containing the file, then select the CSV. VS Code’s built-in editor supports ordinary text editing and saving; it is not itself a spreadsheet grid. VS Code basic editing
- Inspect the header and sample rows. Check several representative records, especially rows with empty fields, quotes, commas inside values, identifiers, or date-like strings.
- Check the file encoding if characters look wrong. VS Code shows the encoding in the status bar and lets you reopen or save with a selected encoding. Do not change it casually if another application expects a particular encoding. VS Code editor overview
Option 1: Make precise edits in the text editor
Use this approach when the change is literal and you can identify exactly which text should change. Edit the content, use Find or Replace carefully, and save the file. VS Code’s editor displays the CSV’s actual text, including delimiters and quote characters.
- Check the beginning and end of each edited row for missing or extra delimiters.
- Keep quotation marks that group a field containing the delimiter. For example, a comma inside
"Dallas, Texas"belongs to that field when the file uses commas as separators and quotation marks as text qualifiers. - After a bulk find-and-replace, inspect multiple changed and unchanged rows. A replacement intended for one column can also match text in another column.
- Save the copy, then reopen or inspect it to confirm the lines and fields still look as expected.

Option 2: Edit in Data Wrangler
- In VS Code, open the folder containing the data file.
- In Explorer, right-click the CSV and select Open in Data Wrangler.
- If prompted for parsing options, choose the delimiter and, for a workbook file, the sheet that matches the data you intend to work with.
- Review the table, make the needed cleaning or preparation changes, and export the cleaned data as a new CSV or Parquet file.
- Inspect the exported file before replacing or sending the original. Verify representative values and the structure that matters to the receiving application.

Stop Excel from changing text-like values
Excel may interpret a CSV column using its default data-format settings when opening the file. As a result, leading zeros can disappear, long numeric-looking identifiers can be displayed in scientific notation or lose precision, and some letter-and-number strings can be interpreted as dates. For values where every character matters—such as postal codes, account or product IDs, and date-like codes—import the CSV and set the relevant columns to Text before loading, rather than relying on Excel to infer their types.

- In Excel, choose Data > From Text/CSV and select the file.
- Review the import preview, including the delimiter and representative rows.

- Load the data and verify that leading zeros, long identifiers, and date-like strings retain their intended characters.
Some Excel versions provide Automatic Data Conversions settings for controlling certain conversions, but availability varies by version. If Excel has already changed an underlying value, applying a text display format afterward does not restore characters that were removed, such as leading zeros. Check the delimiter and quoted fields
Do not assume every file ending in .csv uses a comma as its separator. The delimiter can depend on how the file was produced, and Excel’s list-separator settings can affect CSV saving. If Excel splits a field unexpectedly, the separator or quote assumptions may not match the file.

In Excel’s import preview, confirm the delimiter and inspect rows with quoted values. With a comma delimiter and quotation mark as the text qualifier, "Dallas, Texas" should load as one field, not two. Exporting a CSV from an Excel workbook
If you edit the data in an Excel workbook and need a CSV, use Save As and choose a CSV format. CSV export is limited: Excel saves only the active worksheet, not every sheet in the workbook, and some workbook features may be lost. After export, open the CSV in VS Code or another text editor and check the header, expected rows, delimiter, quoting, and sensitive values. Confirm the delimiter the receiving application expects instead of assuming it is a comma.
