To preserve one web page, use the Wayback Machine’s Save Page Now form, submit the page’s full URL, and keep the archived link it returns. Then open that link and verify the text, images, and important links. Save Page Now captures the submitted page when possible; it is not a complete website backup or a recurring crawl.
Save one page with Save Page Now
- Open the Wayback Machine and choose Save Page Now.
- Paste the complete page URL, including
https://, into the form. - Submit the form and wait for processing. A successful submission produces an archived URL containing a timestamp.
- Open the returned URL in a new tab. Check the page layout, images, downloads, and any links you need to preserve.
- Store the archived URL in your documentation, ticket, citation, or change record. The Internet Archive Help Center describes the result as a permanent URL, but notes that crawling restrictions and SSL problems can prevent a capture.
The live Save Page Now form may also display controls for saving outlinks, error pages, a screenshot, copying a capture into your personal web archive, emailing results, or downloading a WACZ file. Availability can change, and some controls require sign-in, so read the options shown on the form instead of assuming they are always present.
What a Save Page Now capture does—and does not do
It captures a single submitted URL
The basic operation saves the page you entered, along with images and CSS when those assets are available to the crawler. It does not automatically add every page linked from that page, discover the rest of a domain, or schedule future captures.
It is not a website backup
A one-time capture is unsuitable as the only copy of a site, application, or legal record. The Internet Archive says it cannot guarantee that a site has been archived, and its terms do not make the service a general backup facility. Keep your own source files, exports, and backups.

Choose a collection crawler for recurring preservation
Organizations that need defined collections crawled repeatedly can evaluate Archive-It, the Internet Archive’s paid subscription service. It lets an organization specify what to crawl and how often, with technical and web-archivist support. Archive Team is another organization named by the Internet Archive Help Center for broader volunteer preservation efforts. Neither option is required for an ordinary one-page capture.
Verify the archived page before relying on it
A capture can succeed while still being incomplete. Use this checklist:
- Confirm the archived timestamp in the URL and the date shown in the Wayback interface.
- Read the main text and compare it with the page you intended to save.
- Open important images, style sheets, PDFs, and downloads; an asset that was never archived will appear broken.
- Test links that matter to your evidence or workflow.
- Look for live-web leakage. If a linked URL was not archived, Wayback may show a nearby capture or fetch the link from the live web. Do not treat that live content as part of the old snapshot.
Interpret the calendar colors
The Help Center defines Wayback status colors as blue for a 2xx server response, green for a 3xx redirect, orange for a 4xx client error, and red for a 5xx server error. Blue is generally the best starting point, but color alone does not prove that all assets or dynamic behavior were captured.
Find an older capture
- Enter a known page URL or domain in the Wayback Machine.
- Use the calendar and timeline to select a date range.
- Choose a capture and inspect its timestamped URL.
- Follow the verification checklist above, especially for images, scripts, and linked documents.
For a known page, URL lookup is more reliable than the archive’s general site search. The Help Center explains that site search is aimed at finding site homepages from descriptive terms, not indexing every word on every archived page. Wildcard URL patterns can help you inspect captures beneath a path, but they do not turn the service into a full-text search engine.

Why a page or its assets may be missing
The crawler never discovered the URL
An unlinked or rarely visited page may never have entered a crawl. Submitting it with Save Page Now creates a new opportunity, but does not guarantee success.

Access controls blocked retrieval
Password-protected pages, robots.txt restrictions, other access controls, and an owner’s exclusion request can prevent archiving. A page that requires a logged-in session is especially unlikely to replay correctly.
JavaScript and unusual page technology
JavaScript-dependent interfaces, server-side image maps, and orphan pages are difficult for crawlers. Simple, server-rendered HTML is generally easier to archive. A modern application may therefore show text but lose interactive controls, client-rendered data, or navigation.
Images and other resources were not captured
Wayback can save images and CSS when available, but an image absent from the archive servers will be broken in playback. The same issue can affect fonts, scripts, video, downloadable files, and third-party embeds.
Redirects and nearby dates
A capture may redirect to another URL or use a nearby date for a missing linked resource. Read the final archived address and timestamp rather than assuming every element came from the date you selected.
Use extensions and mobile apps
The Internet Archive Help Center lists add-ons for Chrome, Firefox, and Safari, plus iOS and Android apps. In the described extension workflow, open the page, select the Wayback toolbar icon, and choose Save Page Now. These entry points use the same page-level model and limitations as the website form. The extension can also notify you when a missing page later receives an archived copy. The Help Center points to a Wikipedia JavaScript bookmarklet as another browser-based submission method.

Capture one page or preserve a collection?
| Need | Appropriate route | Scope and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Save a single page immediately | Save Page Now | One URL, one submission; inspect the resulting capture. |
| Submit from a browser or phone | Extension or mobile app | Convenient entry point; the same page-level limits apply. |
| Preserve defined content repeatedly | Archive-It | Paid organizational subscription with crawl scheduling and support. |
| Volunteer response to broad preservation needs | Archive Team | Community-led effort named by the Internet Archive Help Center; availability and scope depend on its projects. |
Compare these choices by four questions: how much content must be captured, how often it must be recaptured, whether you need technical or archival support, and how you will verify that the resulting files contain the required page and assets.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a clean image or PDF of a live page for documentation, testing, or a workflow, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The API supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, dark mode, 12 device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper size/margins/landscape/page ranges, HTML/CSS-to-image, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, waits for selectors/delays/network idle, blocking ads/trackers/requests/resource types, custom headers/cookies/user agents/Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed public-image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Common screenshot-API parameter names also work, which can simplify migration.
See the complete parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. Replace the example URL with the page you want to capture.

Troubleshooting Save Page Now
The submission fails or never finishes
Retry with the canonical HTTPS URL and remove temporary query parameters. SSL problems, crawl restrictions, an unavailable origin, or a page that requires authentication can stop a capture. If the page is transient, submit again while it is publicly reachable and save any successful timestamped URL.

- Backup, restore, archive, copy, distribute or manage your data
- Optimized for network backup
- Reliable read/write operations
The archive shows a blank page
Check another capture date and inspect the live page’s server-rendered response. A JavaScript-only application may not replay its client-rendered content. If the page is protected or blocked, Wayback may not be able to retrieve it.
Images are broken
Open the image URL through the archived page and search for another capture of that asset or a nearby date. If no archived copy exists, the original image cannot be reconstructed from that capture.
A link opens current content
Return to the timestamped page, copy the archived form of the link, and verify its date. A missing outlink can be fetched from the live web, which must be treated as separate, current content.
You need the whole site
Save Page Now will not initiate a site-wide crawl. Define the collection, crawl frequency, and verification requirements, then investigate Archive-It or another preservation program rather than submitting pages one by one and calling that a backup.
Operational and cost considerations
For a small number of public pages, Save Page Now, an extension, or a mobile app is the simplest self-service approach and has no requirement to purchase an institutional crawl subscription. Budget time for verification: a successful response is not proof that every asset was preserved. For automated visual records, ScreenshotNeo’s cache, asynchronous jobs, webhooks, bulk requests, and usage API can make repeat captures easier to operate; its billing headers let a job record whether a response was billed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I save a page that requires a password?
Usually not. Password-protected content and other access controls can prevent the Wayback crawler from retrieving or replaying the page.
Does saving a homepage save the linked articles?
No. Save Page Now saves the submitted URL; it does not automatically crawl the entire site or add the URL to future crawls.
Can I cite an archived page in a report?
Yes, use the timestamped archived URL, but first verify that the text and assets you cite are actually present and that links have not switched to live content.
