To control a device in SmartThings, open Devices, choose the right home or location, find the device in its room, and open its device card. Use Manage rooms to create rooms or organize devices, and use Home or Favorites for quick access, depending on the tab names in your version.

Find and control a device

  1. Open SmartThings and select Devices. Samsung describes Devices as the area for viewing and managing devices already added to the app.
  2. Choose the relevant home or location. If you have more than one, check that you are browsing the one where the device is set up.
  3. Browse the rooms and select the device. Open its device card to see the controls available for that product.

The controls shown depend on the connected product. SmartThings does not present an identical set of controls for every device.

Add a room or change a device’s room

Create a room

Samsung Australia documents this route for creating a room: open Devices, choose Manage rooms, tap Add, select a location, enter a room name, and save. Then open the room and use its add-device control to place devices there.

Move a device to another room

Samsung’s device-management guidance describes changing a room from the device’s details. Open the device, go to its details or settings, and edit its room assignment. The exact labels and icons can vary by app version and country, so follow the equivalent room or location control shown on your screen.

Use Home or Favorites for quick access

Use the Home or Favorites area for devices and other SmartThings items you want to reach quickly; the label depends on the version you see. Samsung’s US setup guidance describes Favorites as a quick-access area.

The labels have changed over time. Samsung’s US announcement dated November 12, 2024 describes the Favorites tab being transformed into Home, including personalized Home Insight. An earlier Samsung Global Newsroom announcement, dated June 9, 2021, described an interface with five sections: Favorites, Devices, Life, Automations, and Menu. Those dated descriptions explain why older screenshots may not match your current app; they do not establish that every regional build uses the same labels today.

Use Map View to see devices on a floor plan

Map View is an optional visual way to organize a home, not a requirement for controlling devices. Samsung’s guide describes starting with a photo of a floor plan, a freehand drawing, or a preset arrangement of rooms and walls. Add rooms and devices to the map; tap a room to see its devices, or tap a device icon to open its card for monitoring and control.

Find SmartThings tutorials in the app

Where the menu path is available, open Menu → How to use and choose a tutorial. If those labels are absent, look for the app’s help or tutorial area: menus can change between versions.

Why your screen may look different

SmartThings instructions and screens can vary by region, device, and app version. Samsung Canada’s device-management guidance, updated March 6, 2026, specifically notes that its information concerns devices sold in Canada and that screens and settings may differ elsewhere. Use the equivalent controls visible in your installed app rather than assuming that a menu path shown for another country will match exactly. Product availability and features can also vary by market.
