Save the page as HTML with “Save Editable Page” or create a bookmark (URL file); the clipper embeds a screenshot of the currently visible part of the page in the saved file by default. If you need a separate image—or the whole page—choose one of its screenshot commands instead.
Save a webpage with an embedded thumbnail
- Install TagSpaces Web Clipper for your browser. Its documentation names Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave, and Opera; store availability and menu labels may vary by browser.
- Open the webpage you want to save, then select the Web Clipper extension from your browser toolbar.
- In the clipper popup, optionally change the title or add tags. Choose “Save Editable Page” to save the page as HTML, or choose the bookmark action to create a URL file.
- Save the file when prompted. The saved HTML or URL file includes a screenshot of the visible page area as its thumbnail, provided screenshot embedding is enabled.
The result is a local file, not a screenshot-only image. TagSpaces says the extension’s basic functionality does not require the TagSpaces desktop app.
Check the screenshot embedding setting
Thumbnail embedding is enabled by default. If a saved HTML or URL file has no screenshot, open the Web Clipper extension settings and make sure “Embed screenshot in saved files” is enabled. Turn it off only if you do not want the screenshot embedded.
This setting is distinct from image embedding. Image embedding concerns the page’s images in saved HTML or Markdown; screenshot embedding adds the captured webpage image used as the thumbnail.

Choose the right capture: thumbnail, viewport, or full page

The embedded thumbnail is not automatically a full-page capture. To include below-the-fold content in a single image, use “Full-Page Screenshot.” TagSpaces notes that a long page can take several seconds to capture because the browser limits how frequently screenshots can be taken. During the process, the extension hides fixed and sticky elements after the first capture to avoid repeating headers and cookie banners, then restores them.
Choose a save location and output format
In Chrome, Edge, Brave, or Opera, enable the browser’s “Ask where to save each file before downloading” setting if you want a prompt to choose the download location. The exact path to this setting can differ across browser versions.
TagSpaces documents HTML, Markdown, MHTML, PDF, PNG, and URL as supported output formats. For HTML, “Simplified Mode” extracts the main content without ads and navigation, while “Full Mode” keeps the original text and image content. Markdown extraction is marked experimental, so results can vary with page complexity.

For Chromium browsers, “Save Complete Page” can save MHTML, but it may require enabling the browser’s “Save Page as MHTML” flag. TagSpaces warns that enabling the flag means the browser will no longer save websites as HTML files. You do not need this setting to create a thumbnail in an HTML or URL file.

Troubleshoot missing or unexpected thumbnails
- No thumbnail in the saved HTML or URL file: Check that “Embed screenshot in saved files” is enabled in the extension settings. Also confirm that you saved as HTML or a URL file; “Take Screenshot” creates a separate PNG instead.
- The thumbnail shows only the top or visible section: That is expected for the embedded screenshot. Use “Full-Page Screenshot” for a stitched image of content below the fold.
- The full-page capture is slow: Long captures may take several seconds because of browser screenshot-frequency limits. Allow the capture to finish before closing the tab or extension.
- The page images are missing or still remote: Image embedding and screenshot embedding are separate settings. Check the image-embedding option for the saved HTML or Markdown; do not assume the screenshot-thumbnail setting downloads page images.
- You cannot find an option or format: The available actions can differ by browser. Check the current Web Clipper menu and settings for your browser rather than enabling the MHTML flag for a thumbnail-only task.

Does TagSpaces Web Clipper save the thumbnail as a separate file?
Not when you save an HTML page or URL bookmark; the screenshot is embedded in that file. “Take Screenshot” and “Full-Page Screenshot” create separate PNG images.
Can I use the saved files without TagSpaces?
Yes. The Web Clipper stores ordinary local files, and its basic functionality does not depend on the TagSpaces desktop app.

Is TagSpaces Web Clipper the same as OneNote, Obsidian, or Notion Web Clipper?
No. Those are separate products with different save workflows. OneNote documents screenshot capture of a full page or selected region; the TagSpaces documentation describes the embedded-thumbnail behavior covered here.
