Run your working FFmpeg command as a foreground systemd service, then set a restart policy such as Restart=on-failure. systemd can relaunch FFmpeg after the process exits; it cannot by itself detect every stalled output or guarantee that YouTube accepts the stream. First validate the FFmpeg command manually, then configure, enable, and monitor the service.
What systemd can—and cannot—recover
systemd supervises the lifetime of the FFmpeg process. When that process exits under the conditions covered by its restart policy, systemd can try to start it again after the configured delay. Restart=on-failure is a practical starting point when failures should trigger recovery but a clean, intentional exit should not necessarily create an endless loop. Restart behavior and limits depend on the systemd version and local policy; check the installed system’s service documentation and settings. See the systemd service reference.
This is different from FFmpeg reconnecting while it remains alive. Protocol-specific reconnect options may handle some network interruptions, but they do not cover every input or publishing endpoint. And neither mechanism proves that the destination is receiving playable audio. A process can be active while its output is stalled.
Validate the sleep-sounds command before creating a service
Build and run the complete FFmpeg command interactively first. The title does not specify whether the source is a local audio file or live input, how it should repeat, which codecs to use, or where the stream is published, so there is no single safe command line for every setup. Confirm that your chosen input and output work, and that the audio loops or continues as intended.

Use absolute paths for FFmpeg and files. Make sure the account that will run the service can read the audio and any required configuration, access the network, and write to any state or log locations the command needs. Treat the publishing URL or stream key as a credential: do not put a live key in a public example or a unit readable by everyone.
systemd does not automatically process shell syntax such as pipes, redirection, or environment-variable expansion in ExecStart=. If shell logic is genuinely required, put it in a reviewed executable script and invoke that script explicitly.

Create the systemd unit
The following is a structural template, not a tested drop-in. Replace the placeholder arguments with the exact arguments from your validated command, and confirm the FFmpeg path on your VPS. This example assumes a system-level unit and a service account named stream.

For credential handling, use a protected mechanism appropriate to the distribution and deployment. Check file ownership and permissions, and avoid copying secrets into a broadly readable unit file.

Load, enable, start, and inspect the service
Save the unit as /etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-sleep-stream.service, then run these commands, replacing the name if you chose a different unit:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload— make systemd read the new or changed unit.sudo systemctl enable --now ffmpeg-sleep-stream.service— enable it to start at boot and start it now.sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-sleep-stream.service— inspect whether it is active, failed, or repeatedly restarting, along with recent messages.sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-sleep-stream.service -f— follow new journal entries for this unit.
journalctl displays entries held by systemd’s journal. If you see no FFmpeg output, check that the process writes diagnostics to standard output or error, review the unit’s output settings, and check the distribution’s journal configuration and retention. See the journalctl manual for systemd 255.

Choose recovery for the actual FFmpeg protocol
Use systemd for a process that exits; consider FFmpeg’s protocol-specific reconnect options for a supported interruption that occurs while FFmpeg is still running. These are different recovery layers, not interchangeable settings.
The FFmpeg Protocols Documentation describes HTTP options including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_streamed, and retry limits. For example, the documentation describes reconnect as: “Reconnect automatically when disconnected before EOF is hit.” That description concerns the option’s protocol context; it is not a universal guarantee for all inputs, publishing protocols, or endpoints. Do not copy HTTP input options onto an RTMP output or assume they recover every publishing-server disconnect. Check the documentation for the protocol actually in use and the options supported by your installed FFmpeg build.

For a local sleep-sounds file, looping is an input and timing design question. For a live source, end-of-file and reconnect behavior differ. Confirm that a restart begins playback in a sensible way: depending on the input, a new FFmpeg process may begin from the start rather than resume where the previous one stopped. The FFmpeg command-line documentation covers command options, but the right combination depends on your stream design.
Troubleshoot failures in order
- Check the unit state and exit details. Run
sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-sleep-stream.service. Note whether the service is failed, restarting, or active, and inspect the reported exit result. - Read this boot’s service logs. Run
sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-sleep-stream.service -b; add-fto follow new entries. Look for authentication errors, missing files, invalid arguments, unsupported codecs or protocols, endpoint rejection, and resource problems before changing restart frequency. - Check paths and arguments. Confirm that
ExecStartpoints to the real FFmpeg executable and that arguments are correctly separated. Run the same command as the configured service account, with the same working directory and environment constraints. - Check access and credentials. Verify that inputs exist and are readable, needed output or state locations are writable, destination details are valid, credentials are current and protected, and network access is allowed.
- Verify the stream at its destination. A service restart in the journal confirms process activity, not a playable broadcast. Separately check whether the publishing platform recognizes and plays the stream.
- If FFmpeg stays active but audio or output stops, a process-exit policy may not notice. Identify what “healthy” means for the stream, then consider protocol-specific recovery or a deliberately designed health check/watchdog that can detect that condition.
A rapid restart loop can produce repeated failures without fixing the cause. Correct the command, access, network, or endpoint issue first; then tune the delay and restart limits for the deployment.
