That keeps the process running after SSH disconnects and can relaunch it after a crash or reboot—but it does not guarantee uninterrupted playback: YouTube, the network, the media source, and music rights can still stop a stream.
What systemd can—and cannot—keep running
systemd is a Linux service manager. When it supervises FFmpeg as the service’s main foreground process, your SSH session can close without ending the process. With a suitable restart policy, systemd can launch FFmpeg again after certain failures, and an enabled service can start on boot.
It is not a stream-health monitor. A service can be active while FFmpeg is failing to deliver usable media to YouTube. Nor can a process restart fix an invalid stream key, a missing file, unsupported media settings, a blocked network route, an invalid or ended live event, or a copyright interruption. If a looped file is restarted, playback may begin at the start again.
Prepare the host, media, and YouTube event
Choose a machine that can stay available
You can use an existing Linux machine or an optional rented Linux VPS. Choose based on continuous availability, network reliability and upload capacity for the stream, your ability to administer Linux and systemd, cost, and how you will recover access if the host or service fails. No particular VPS provider or hardware model is required by this setup.

Prepare the service account and input
- Use a dedicated, unprivileged Linux account for the service rather than running FFmpeg as root.
- Choose a working directory and ensure the service account can read the input video and any configuration it needs.
- Confirm that the installed FFmpeg build supports the input and output formats you intend to use.
Get the current YouTube ingest details
In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live event and obtain its current server URL and stream key. Use YouTube’s RTMPS ingest address, not a plain RTMP URL. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance says to use RTMPS and notes port 443 where needed; the Live Streaming API documentation describes the primary RTMPS ingestion address fields.
FFmpeg setups commonly pass a URL that combines the server address and key, but interfaces can also expect the URL and stream name separately. Follow the format required by your FFmpeg command and the current YouTube endpoint. Keep the real key private: do not publish it, put it in screenshots, or include it in support requests.
Check music rights before going live
YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions say: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” You are responsible for establishing the rights needed for the particular song, recording, composition, territories, and use; confirm them with the relevant rights holders or a qualified rights adviser.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can trigger a placeholder and warning; continued use can lead to temporary interruption or termination. Even licensed music may be interrupted unless the rights owner adds your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Creator Music does not support licensing for live content. A playlist, attribution, purchased recording, or “no copyright intended” note does not establish livestream rights.

Create a systemd service for FFmpeg
The following is a unit template, not a tested, universal FFmpeg recipe. Replace the account, paths, environment-file location, and command with values for your host and media. The command must match the actual source, codecs, current YouTube ingest settings, and installed FFmpeg build.
Store the key in a protected environment file
For example, create /etc/ffmpeg-youtube.env with the current RTMPS URL and key in the form your command will read. Restrict ownership and permissions so only root and the service account can access it. Do not put a real key in a public unit file, logs, screenshots, or examples.
sudo chown root:ffmpegstream /etc/ffmpeg-youtube.env
sudo chmod 640 /etc/ffmpeg-youtube.envHere, ffmpegstream is an example group; create or choose an appropriate group for your host and make sure the service account can read the file. Variable names and quoting must match how your command consumes them.
Write the unit file
Create /etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-youtube.service and adapt this template. The sample shows the service structure; it does not prescribe a bitrate, codec, resolution, or GOP value.

WantedBy=multi-user.targetIn this illustrative command, -re reads the file at its native rate and -stream_loop -1 asks FFmpeg to loop it. The FLV output and stream URL are examples only. Copying codecs works only when the input codecs and container are suitable for the current YouTube ingest requirements; otherwise, configure encoding appropriate to your source and FFmpeg build. Do not treat any sample command or setting as a universal YouTube recommendation.
The service runs FFmpeg in the foreground, which lets systemd track its main process. Wants= and After= order startup around network-online.target; they do not ensure that a remote network or YouTube endpoint will be reachable. Adjust file paths and permissions so the service account can read the input and configuration.
Load, enable, and start the service
- Ask systemd to load the new unit:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable it for boot and start it now:
sudo systemctl enable --now ffmpeg-youtube.service. - Check its local state:
sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.service.
Enabling the unit arranges for systemd to start it during boot. Starting successfully on a reboot still depends on the host, network, input file, credentials, and YouTube event being available and valid.
Understand and tune restart behavior
Restart=on-failure tells systemd to restart the service after a non-zero exit, certain signals, qualifying operation timeouts, or watchdog timeouts, as described in the systemd service documentation. It does not restart a service that systemd intentionally stopped. RestartSec=10 in the template is an example delay, not a required value; choose a delay that avoids a tight retry loop and suits the host and network.

Repeated failures can hit systemd’s start-rate limits and leave the unit failed rather than retrying indefinitely. If retries stop, inspect the unit’s restart policy, start limits, and journal. Raising limits without fixing the cause can simply repeat the same failure more often.

- Check the process: run
sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.serviceand inspect recent logs withsudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -n 100 --no-pager. Look for FFmpeg startup errors, unreadable input, connection failures, or repeated exits. - Check YouTube’s reception: open the event in YouTube Live Control Room and inspect its stream preview and health information. An active systemd unit does not prove that YouTube is receiving usable media.
- Check connection details if ingest fails: confirm that the server address is the current RTMPS URL, the key is current, the endpoint/path and port are correct, and the command passes the URL and key in the expected form. Where needed, YouTube’s RTMPS guidance mentions port 443.
- Separate process recovery from event recovery: a restart cannot repair an invalid key, missing input, incompatible media settings, blocked route, or ended or invalid event. Correct the underlying problem, then restart the service if needed.
Troubleshoot common failures
