You can schedule a YouTube livestream through Switchboard’s Scheduled Events feature, or create it in YouTube Studio and connect it to Switchboard with a Custom RTMP destination. The first path manages the scheduled event in Switchboard; the second uses the YouTube event’s own Stream URL and Stream Key. In either case, sending encoder video is not necessarily the same as launching the event: for a Switchboard Scheduled Event, you must click Start Streaming.

Choose where to create the scheduled event

Path Where you create the event How you connect it Best fit
Switchboard Scheduled Event In a Switchboard workflow or the Events Page Manager Add a YouTube destination, send encoder video to the workflow, then click Start Streaming. You want to manage the event and its destinations in Switchboard. Switchboard Scheduled Events guide
YouTube event plus Custom RTMP YouTube Studio / Live Control Room Copy that YouTube event’s Stream URL and Stream Key into a Switchboard Custom RTMP destination. You already created the event in YouTube or need to use that event’s own key. Switchboard Custom RTMP guide

The current Scheduled Events guide documents a Switchboard-managed event workflow. A separate Custom RTMP guide describes a manual YouTube-created event workflow; its limitation about direct support applies to that procedure, not to the newer Scheduled Events route. Neither path is established as producing better audience outcomes.

Create and launch a Switchboard Scheduled Event

  1. Open event creation. Start from the workflow you want to use and choose to create a Scheduled Event, or open the Events Page Manager and select New Event. If you begin in the manager, select the workflow for the event.
  2. Enter event details. Add an internal event name, then enter the public stream title and description and the scheduled start date and time. Add a thumbnail or use the default. The Switchboard guide says a scheduled event page is also created for YouTube Partner Destinations.
  3. Add YouTube. Choose a YouTube destination already saved to your account, or connect a new one.
  4. Prepare the encoder feed. At the scheduled time, open the workflow’s Upcoming Events tab and start sending video from your encoder. Confirm that the workflow is receiving video. An encoder such as OBS or Ecamm can provide the feed; no particular camera, capture card, microphone, or hardware encoder is required by the documented workflow.
  5. Launch the event. The guide says Start Streaming turns green when video is present at the 30-minute-before mark. Click it to launch all destinations in the event group. Starting the encoder feed alone does not launch the scheduled event.
  6. End the stream. Click Stop Streaming in the event header. Switchboard says the event is archived and removed from the workflow; post-event analytics are available in the Events Page Manager for supported destinations.

For YouTube’s general scheduled-stream behavior and Live Control Room workflow, see YouTube’s guide to live streaming. YouTube says scheduled streams can be discoverable in search and subscriber feeds, and potentially on the home page.

Create the event in YouTube Studio and connect it with Custom RTMP

  1. Schedule the YouTube stream. Create the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, and set its title, description, visibility, date, time, audience, and thumbnail there.
  2. Copy the event’s connection details. Open the scheduled event and copy its Stream URL and Stream Key. Switchboard recommends using a new stream key for the scheduled event to help ensure the encoder feed attaches to that event.
  3. Add a Custom RTMP destination in Switchboard. Paste the Stream URL into the Stream URL field and the Stream Key into the Stream Key field. Do not interchange them.
  4. Send and launch the feed. Send video from your encoder to Switchboard, select the Custom RTMP destination, and click Go Live.

Titles and descriptions entered in Switchboard do not transfer to Custom RTMP destinations, including YouTube scheduled events. Enter and manage those event details in YouTube Studio for this route. YouTube’s own live-stream production guide also describes scheduling in Studio, copying the stream key into the encoder, and launching from Live Control Room.

Which route should you use?

  • Choose a Switchboard Scheduled Event when you want the event and destination launch managed from the Switchboard workflow. Add the YouTube destination, confirm the encoder feed, and use the event’s Start Streaming control.
  • Choose YouTube Studio plus Custom RTMP when the event already exists in YouTube or you specifically need its individual Stream URL and Stream Key. Keep metadata in YouTube Studio and ensure the correct key is used.

For either method, the important operational checks are that the intended event is selected, the correct YouTube destination is attached, and the encoder feed is reaching the workflow. The documentation does not establish comparative audience or performance results for these paths.

Troubleshoot common scheduling problems

Start Streaming is not available

Check whether encoder video is reaching the workflow. For a Scheduled Event, Switchboard says the control turns green at the 30-minute-before mark when the feed is present. Sending video to the workflow is a readiness step; the operator still has to start the event.

The stream schedules instead of going live

Switchboard’s FAQ identifies a missing stream title in the active template as a possible cause. Stop the stream, update the YouTube title in the designated field, then follow the FAQ’s connection troubleshooting steps: Switchboard FAQ.

The Custom RTMP stream attaches to the wrong event or fails to connect

Verify that the Stream URL and Stream Key came from the intended YouTube event and were pasted into their matching fields. A new key for that scheduled event is Switchboard’s recommended approach for helping attach the feed to the specific event.

A shared event link no longer works

Removing YouTube from a Switchboard Scheduled Event permanently deletes its public event page. Links shared for that destination break, and viewers who selected Notify Me lose that event subscription. Confirm the impact before removing the destination.

You are relying on a late-start window

Switchboard’s 2025 launch article said an event could start up to six hours after its scheduled time and would expire if not started within six hours. The current Scheduled Events support guide documents starting 30 minutes early but does not repeat that late-start rule. Because the six-hour guidance is launch-era, check the current dashboard or Switchboard support before relying on it: Switchboard’s 2025 launch article.
