Short answer: Streamlink is a stream extraction and transport tool, not a documented end-to-end encoder for sending an ordinary gameplay recording to YouTube Live. It can send recognized stream data to standard output, and its manual shows a generic Streamlink-to-FFmpeg pipe. But that example is not a verified recipe for pacing and encoding an arbitrary local video file for YouTube. For a regular recording, use an encoder that can open the file and publish to YouTube, or test a Streamlink/FFmpeg pipeline with your exact file format and installed versions.

What Streamlink can—and cannot—do here

Streamlink is designed to extract streams and hand them to a player or another process. Its command-line documentation includes --stdout, which writes received stream data to standard output, and its manual shows a general pattern like streamlink --stdout URL STREAM | ffmpeg -i pipe:0 .... That establishes a way to pass stream data between programs; it does not establish a complete, tested workflow for turning any local gameplay recording into a paced YouTube Live broadcast. Streamlink CLI documentation and the Streamlink FFmpeg pipe example describe those capabilities.

Streamlink’s protocol documentation also describes reading a local HLS playlist with a file:// address and supports relative and absolute paths in that example. This is not proof that every ordinary MP4, MKV, or other gameplay file will work as a Streamlink input. Streamlink’s local-file protocol documentation demonstrates the narrower supported case.

The project lists Streamlink 8.6.1 as its stable documentation version; its changelog dates that release to September 16, 2026. Commands and compatibility may vary by operating system, file container, codecs, and installed versions. See the Streamlink changelog before relying on version-specific behavior.

Choose a workflow for your recording

Use an encoder that opens the file directly

For a conventional recorded gameplay file, choose an encoder that can read that file, play it at normal speed, configure YouTube-compatible output, and publish to YouTube. Confirm that the encoder supports your container and codecs, real-time playback rather than simply processing the file as fast as possible, and RTMPS output. The cited documentation does not establish a particular graphical encoder’s file-playback behavior, so check the documentation for the encoder and version you use.

Use Streamlink only when the input is a recognized stream

If your source is a stream or protocol Streamlink recognizes, its --stdout option can provide the incoming bytes to another program such as FFmpeg. The generic pipe pattern is useful as a starting concept, but it is not a ready-made command for a local gameplay recording: the receiving encoder still has to handle pacing, video and audio encoding, and YouTube publishing. Test with a non-public stream or other safe setup before relying on the pipeline for a scheduled broadcast. Do not assume a file:// input works for your recording merely because Streamlink documents a local HLS playlist example.

Set up YouTube Live

  1. Create or select a stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a broadcast or select the stream you intend to use. YouTube’s live streaming setup guidance describes connecting an encoder to the stream.
  2. Copy the ingest details into your encoder. Use the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room in the corresponding encoder settings. Keep the key private: someone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Never use a real key in an example, public script, screenshot, or command you plan to share.
  3. Start the encoder and check the preview. Confirm that the incoming video and audio appear in Live Control Room. For a scheduled broadcast, YouTube says to wait for the preview and then select Go live. Follow the current Studio prompts for ending the stream.

Check the encoder settings before going live

YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP, and publishes encoder guidance for codecs, frame rates, keyframes, bitrate, and audio. Use the current YouTube Live encoder settings page for the applicable bitrate row and codec notes rather than treating one bitrate as right for every gameplay recording.

Copyright, archives, and monetization

Having a gameplay recording does not by itself establish that you have the rights to every element in it. Check the rights and applicable permissions for game footage, soundtrack, overlays, and other material before broadcasting; YouTube’s live streaming help covers platform setup, but does not grant rights to third-party content. YouTube says creators in the YouTube Partner Program may monetize live streams; eligibility and applicable policies determine whether that option is available to you.

YouTube Help states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Treat that as YouTube’s stated guidance, not a guarantee that a stream of any length will be archived. If you need a copy of the recording, plan your own local recording or other backup as appropriate.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

Streamlink rejects or cannot read the file

The local-file documentation’s example is an HLS playlist; it does not promise support for every standard gameplay video format. Use an encoder that can open your file directly, or verify that the exact input protocol and format are recognized before building a pipeline.

The FFmpeg pipeline starts but YouTube receives no usable video

A generic stdout pipe only passes data between processes. It does not prove that the source is being played in real time, that FFmpeg is producing a compatible encoded output, or that the output is pointed at YouTube’s ingest server. Check each stage separately: recognized input, playback pacing, encoding settings, and YouTube server URL and stream key.

Live Control Room shows no preview

Confirm that the encoder is running and using the current server URL and stream key for the selected broadcast. Then verify that the encoder’s output settings follow YouTube’s current ingest recommendations and check that the encoder is not reporting an input or connection error.

Video appears but audio does not

Check that the recording contains an audio track, that the encoder has selected it, and that the output uses an audio format supported by YouTube’s guidance. Confirm audio in the Live Control Room preview before going live.

The stream disconnects or the output stutters

Check the encoder’s connection and error indicators, then reduce the output target if the source or upload cannot sustain it. Match the bitrate to YouTube’s current table for the chosen resolution and frame rate; no single bitrate is appropriate for every setup.

If your goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running without leaving a computer on, StreamNeo takes a different approach: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud; it does not broadcast from a camera.
