Streamlabs’ AI game highlighter is now called Replay; older Streamlabs Desktop instructions still use the name Highlighter for its manual clipping workflow. To capture clips automatically, set up Replay’s Auto Record feature and play a supported game. To choose each moment yourself while streaming in Streamlabs Desktop, set a hotkey and replay duration in Highlighter, then press the hotkey during your stream.
The two workflows are documented separately by Streamlabs, and their labels may vary by app version. Use the automatic workflow if your game is supported and you want Replay to identify moments; use the manual workflow if you want to decide when to save a clip.
Choose automatic Replay or manual Highlighter
| Workflow | How clips are captured | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Replay Auto Record | Replay records gameplay in the background and identifies events such as kills, deaths, victories, and defeats. | Automatic event detection depends on the game being on Streamlabs’ current supported-games list. See Streamlabs’ Replay and Highlighter page. |
| Streamlabs Desktop Highlighter | You press a configured hotkey during a live stream to save a replay of the preceding gameplay. | Set the hotkey and replay duration before going live. The documented workflow is in Streamlabs Desktop Highlighter support. |
Replay’s introduction calls it an AI game highlighter that identifies key gameplay moments and compiles them into a highlight reel. The name transition is explained in Streamlabs’ Replay introduction. Automatic detection is not documented as working for every game.
Set up automatic capture in Replay
- Install and open Replay. Download the current app from Streamlabs, then open it and accept the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.
- Enable Auto Record. Follow the first-run setup prompt to turn it on.
- Install the Recorder Extension if prompted. The extension is requested during setup to allow the app to record the screen. Select Activate Auto Record after completing the prompt.
- Check that your game is supported. Consult the current supported-game list on Streamlabs’ feature page. Event detection varies by game, and Streamlabs says its supported library is expanding.
- Launch the game and play. Replay records in the background and logs gameplay highlights for review later. Do not assume this event-detection workflow applies to an unlisted title.
- Return to Replay after playing. Review the captured moments, trim and edit clips, and arrange them into a finished video.
Capture clips manually in Streamlabs Desktop
- Open Highlighter. Select the Highlighter tab in Streamlabs Desktop’s left navigation panel.
- Choose the hotkey and replay duration. Set the key you will press to capture a moment and how much preceding gameplay each clip should include. Pick a key that will not conflict with your game controls.
- Go live, then press the hotkey when a moment is worth saving. This workflow saves clips on demand rather than relying on automatic event detection.
- Return to Highlighter after the stream. Open the captured clips to begin assembling the reel.
For this workflow, the specific controls and export sequence are described in Streamlabs’ Desktop Highlighter guide. If your installed version uses different labels, follow the options shown in that version rather than assuming every build has identical navigation.

Edit, preview, and export your highlight reel
After capture, edit the moments into a reel before exporting. Streamlabs’ guides describe editing options including trimming clips, changing transitions and their duration, adding an intro or outro, adding background music, rearranging clips, and including, disabling, or deleting individual clips.
- Choose the clips. Remove moments you do not want and arrange the remaining clips in the order that works for the reel.
- Trim and polish. Adjust clip edges, transitions, and any intro, outro, or music you want to use.
- Choose an aspect ratio for the destination. Replay’s guide describes horizontal and vertical formats. Check the current app’s export choices and the intended social platform’s requirements.
- Preview the compilation. Watch the full reel and make any final changes before exporting.
- Select Export and choose the available export settings. After the video downloads, upload it to your chosen platform. Replay’s guide mentions destinations such as YouTube, Discord, and a phone, but availability can change; confirm sharing options in the current app.
Replay can also import existing footage or clips for editing, according to Streamlabs’ How to Use Replay guide. That gives you an editing route when you have footage already, rather than relying only on clips captured during a session.

Requirements and limits to check
- Supported games: automatic event detection is game-dependent. Check Streamlabs’ live supported list before relying on Replay to find moments for a particular title.
- System requirements: Streamlabs’ feature page advertises Windows 10+ and macOS 12+ for Streamlabs Desktop. Requirements can change, so confirm the current download page for the version you plan to install.
- Capture method: the Desktop Highlighter support article documents hotkey-based manual clipping; Replay’s newer workflow documents Auto Record and, if requested, installation of the Recorder Extension.
- Editing and sharing options: format controls and destinations may change. Verify what your installed version offers before building a workflow around a specific export option.
- Cost: Streamlabs describes the feature as free. Check its current product page for current availability and details.
Troubleshooting common capture problems
| Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
| Replay does not identify moments in your game | Check whether the title is on Streamlabs’ current supported-games list. Automatic event detection is not promised for every game; use the Desktop Highlighter hotkey workflow if it suits your setup. |
| Auto Record is not active | Revisit Replay’s setup and confirm Auto Record is enabled. If the Recorder Extension prompt appeared, complete its installation and select Activate Auto Record. |
| A manual clip is missing or too short | Before streaming again, confirm you are in the Highlighter tab and review the configured hotkey and replay duration. Press the hotkey during the session when you want to capture a moment. |
| You cannot find clips after the session | Return to the relevant app workflow: Replay for automatic captures, or Highlighter in Streamlabs Desktop for manually captured clips. |
| The export or sharing destination is unavailable | Check the current export settings and destination list in the installed app. Destination support may change, and a destination mentioned in a guide is not a guarantee it remains available. |
Or let it run in the cloud
Streamlabs Replay helps make gaming highlights; it is not a service for keeping a YouTube channel live around the clock. If your separate goal is to loop uploaded videos as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo runs that stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.
