Steam Remote Play Together lets one person run a supported local multiplayer game while friends join over the internet. The host launches the game, opens the Steam overlay with Shift+Tab, invites a Steam Friend from the Friends List, and has that friend accept in the Steam chat window. Steam streams the host’s game video and audio to the guests and sends their controller input back to the host computer, so invited friends do not need to own or launch the game themselves.

The smoothest cozy session uses a controller for each active player, a game whose store page explicitly lists Remote Play Together, and a host PC and network that can handle real-time streaming. The guide below covers setup, controller assignment, game choice, privacy controls, and fixes for the problems that most often interrupt a co-op night.

What Steam Remote Play Together actually does

Remote Play Together is designed for games that already support local multiplayer or local co-op. Instead of each player running the game separately, one host computer runs the complete game session. Steam captures the game’s video and audio, streams that output to invited friends, and returns their input to the host computer within milliseconds when the connection is fast and stable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That arrangement matters for cozy games because many of them were built around couch co-op rather than a separate online mode. A friend can join the host’s local session from a distance, use a controller connected to their own computer, and see the same game state as everyone else. Steam says the streamed game view does not expose the host’s desktop. The host can also decide whether guests are allowed to share keyboard and mouse control while the session is running.

Logitech G F310 Wired Gamepad Controller Console - Blue/Black | Console-like layout, 4-switch D-pad
  • With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
  • The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.

Remote Play Together is not the same as a game’s ordinary online multiplayer. A store page may list online co-op without supporting Remote Play Together, or it may support both. Check for the specific “Remote Play Together” feature on the game’s Steam store page before planning a session.

Requirements and decisions before inviting anyone

The host’s responsibilities

  • Install Steam, sign in, and install the chosen game.
  • Launch the game on the host PC before sending the invitation.
  • Use a game whose Steam store page lists Remote Play Together.
  • Keep the host PC running the game for the entire session; the host is providing the game process and stream.
  • Add the other players as Steam Friends so they can be selected from the Friends List.

What guests need

  • A Steam account that can receive the host’s invitation.
  • A Steam client and a connection capable of receiving a live video and audio stream.
  • A controller for the simplest experience when the game is controller-oriented. A guest can instead use keyboard and mouse if the host enables sharing.
  • They do not need to own or launch the game when the host is running a supported title.

Confirm the game’s local design

Remote Play Together does not change a game’s local player limit or input rules. A title made for two local players remains a two-player experience, while a four-player local game can accept up to four players if its own design allows it. Read the store listing for the local co-op count, supported controllers, and any developer input recommendations.

Decision Why it matters What to verify
Remote Play Together support It determines whether Steam can turn the local session into an online invitation. The exact Remote Play Together feature appears on the game’s Steam store page.
Local player count Remote guests occupy the game’s existing local player slots. The game’s listed local co-op or local multiplayer maximum.
Input method Some games map a separate controller to each player; others rely on shared keyboard and mouse controls. Controller support, keyboard requirements, and any developer recommendation.
Session mood A gentle game and a time-pressured game create very different kinds of social evening. Pacing, coordination demands, and whether the group wants conversation or constant action.

How to start a Remote Play Together session

  1. Choose and install a supported game. Open the game’s Steam store page and confirm that Remote Play Together is listed. Install it on the host PC, then sign in to Steam.
  2. Connect the controllers. Have each active player connect their own controller before the invitation, if possible. This makes it easier to identify which device belongs to which player when the game opens its local-player screen.
  3. Launch the game as the host. Start the title from the Steam Library and enter its local multiplayer or co-op mode. Keep the game running while you invite friends.
  4. Open the Steam overlay. Press Shift+Tab. If nothing appears, press the shortcut again after clicking the game window, and check that the Steam overlay is enabled for the game in Steam’s properties.
  5. Open the Friends List. In the overlay, open the Friends List, find the person you want to invite, and right-click their name.
  6. Send the Remote Play Together invitation. Choose the Remote Play Together invite command. The invitation is sent through Steam rather than through a separate code or game-room website.
  7. Have the guest accept in Steam chat. Steam’s FAQ places the acceptance control in the chat window. The guest should accept the invitation there and wait for the host’s game session to appear.
  8. Check player assignments. Return to the game’s local multiplayer screen and confirm that every connected controller is assigned to the intended player slot. If the game opens with only the host active, use its add-player prompt after the guest has joined.
  9. Set keyboard and mouse sharing. In the Remote Play panel, allow keyboard and mouse control only when the game needs it. If guests are meant to use controllers, leave sharing disabled to prevent accidental menu or character movement.
  10. Close the overlay and play. Press Shift+Tab again, or select the game window, to return to play. The host should keep the game in the foreground and avoid starting demanding applications during the session.

Controller and keyboard setup

Why one controller per player is usually easiest

Steam supports each player using their own controller during Remote Play Together. A separate device gives the game an unambiguous input source and avoids passing one keyboard between people. It is particularly useful when a title presents a console-style local-player join screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compatibility and player count remain game-specific. A controller can be visible to Steam but unsupported by the game, or a game can accept fewer controllers than the Remote Play session allows guests. If the store listing names a recommended controller type, follow that guidance. Unrailed!, for example, lists full Xbox controller support and says its developers recommend playing with a controller.

  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.

When keyboard and mouse sharing helps

Keyboard sharing is useful when a game was designed around one keyboard, when a player has no controller, or when a title uses mouse-driven menus. The host controls whether guests can share those devices from the Remote Play panel and can change that permission during play.

Sharing can also create conflicts: a guest may open a menu while the host is moving a character, or two players may send input to the same local slot. Start with sharing disabled, enable it briefly when the game requires it, and revoke it as soon as the task is complete. If the game offers separate keyboard bindings, assign them before inviting guests so each player knows which keys are theirs.

Input checklist

  • Connect and test every controller before launching the local session.
  • Check the game’s local player screen, not just Steam’s controller page, for the final assignment.
  • Use one controller per active player when the title is controller-oriented.
  • Enable keyboard and mouse sharing only for the players who need it.
  • If an input device controls the wrong character, remove it from that slot and add it again after the guest joins.

Two cozy games that fit Remote Play Together

The best choice depends on the group’s preferred pace, player count, and willingness to coordinate. The following games have different strengths rather than being interchangeable.

Game Local and Remote Play details Best for Important expectation
Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition Optional two-player local co-op; the second player controls Daffodil the cat; Steam lists Remote Play Together. Two friends who want a calm, routine-driven session with conversation. The story includes mature themes involving death, disability, mental illness, and suicide.
Unrailed! Online and local co-op for up to four players; Steam lists Remote Play Together and full Xbox controller support. Groups that enjoy teamwork, quick decisions, and short bursts of activity. The team must build tracks through procedurally generated worlds and keep the train from derailing, so the pace is more pressured than meditative.

Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition for a gentle two-player evening

Spiritfarer describes itself as a cozy management game about dying. You build and manage a ferry while farming, mining, fishing, harvesting, cooking, weaving, and crafting. Its Steam listing estimates about 30 hours to finish and more than 50 hours to experience everything, although the exact time any pair spends will vary with play style.

  • Hall Effect Joysticks: Delivering enhanced recentering performance for smoother control and superior anti-drift capability. Plus, with anti-friction rings.
  • 2-Way Trigger Lock: With trigger stops, gamers can toggle between short and long pull positions. Additionally, gamers can activate hair trigger mode by pressing M+LT/RT (triggers must be in the long pull position).

  • Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.

Its optional two-player mode adds a second person as Daffodil the cat. That makes it a natural Remote Play Together choice for two friends who want shared routines rather than a race. You can divide attention between the ferry’s activities, talk while completing tasks, and settle into a longer session without requiring four people to coordinate.

Set expectations before starting: the cozy presentation does not mean the story is free of difficult subjects. The store content note mentions death, disability, mental illness, and suicide. A group that wants purely lighthearted play should choose a different title or discuss those themes in advance.

Unrailed! for a four-player teamwork session

Unrailed! centers on cooperative railroad construction. Players gather resources, lay track across procedurally generated environments, and keep the train moving without letting it derail. Its listing supports online and local co-op for up to four players, includes Remote Play Together, and identifies full Xbox controller support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is the better fit when the group wants active communication and clearly divided jobs. One player may gather materials while another lays track, with the others handling obstacles or the train’s immediate needs. The same features that make a session funny and social also make it more demanding: a small communication mistake can force a rapid recovery.

  • Prefer controllers? Both games can be played with controllers, while Unrailed! explicitly recommends one.
  • Need a low-pressure mood? Spiritfarer is the closer match, but account for its mature story topics.
  • Want short, energetic rounds? Unrailed! creates more immediate objectives and pressure.

How streaming quality affects the session

Remote Play Together is real-time streaming rather than a download of the game to each guest. The host computer renders the game, Steam sends video and audio out, and remote input travels back. Steam describes that exchange as happening within milliseconds on a fast internet connection, but its public guidance does not establish one universal bandwidth or latency threshold that works for every game and household.

Reduce load on the host PC

The host is doing two jobs: running the game and encoding a live stream. Close unnecessary games, video editors, browser tabs with active playback, and other applications that compete for CPU, GPU, memory, or upload capacity. If the game offers graphics presets, lowering demanding settings can leave more headroom for the stream.

Stabilize both network paths

The host needs a reliable upload path, while each guest needs a stable connection for the incoming stream and outgoing controller input. Prefer a wired connection when practical. If using Wi-Fi, move closer to the access point, pause large downloads and cloud backups, and avoid starting a second high-bandwidth activity during play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interpret common symptoms

  • Video stutters while audio continues: the host may be overloaded or the stream may be losing packets. Lower the game’s graphics load and check the host upload path.
  • Controls feel delayed: either connection may be unstable, or the host may be rendering at capacity. Test with fewer background applications and a simpler scene.
  • Audio cuts out with the picture: check the host’s stream load and both players’ network stability.
  • Only one player moves: this is usually a controller assignment or keyboard-sharing problem, not a bandwidth problem.

Troubleshooting Remote Play Together

The Remote Play Together option is missing

  1. Open the game’s Steam store page and confirm that it lists Remote Play Together, not merely online multiplayer.
  2. Launch the game first; the invite command may not appear while you are only viewing the Library.
  3. Press Shift+Tab to reopen the overlay and then open the Friends List.
  4. Confirm that the intended guest is a Steam Friend and is available to receive the invitation.

The guest did not receive or cannot accept the invitation

  1. Ask the guest to open the Steam chat window where the invitation was sent.
  2. Resend the invitation after confirming that the host’s game is still running.
  3. Have the guest accept from chat rather than looking for a separate in-game room code.
  4. If the overlay has disappeared, the host should press Shift+Tab again and send a fresh invite.

The guest joined but has no character

  1. Open the game’s local co-op or multiplayer screen.
  2. Check whether the guest’s controller appears as an unassigned device.
  3. Use the game’s join button or player-slot control to add that device.
  4. If keyboard sharing is enabled, disable it temporarily and test the guest’s controller alone.
  5. Reconnect the controller and assign it again if the game still shows an empty slot.

Keyboard and mouse input is taking over

Open the Remote Play panel and revoke keyboard and mouse sharing for guests who do not need it. Keep one controller per player, then verify the game’s local assignments. Re-enable sharing only for a specific task, such as a mouse-driven menu, and turn it off afterward.

The session keeps stuttering

  1. Stop downloads, cloud synchronization, and video streaming on the host and guest networks.
  2. Close demanding applications on the host PC.
  3. Lower the host game’s graphics settings to reduce rendering and encoding load.
  4. Use a wired connection if available, or improve Wi-Fi signal quality.
  5. Test again with fewer guests. If the problem disappears, add players back one at a time to identify whether the host or network is reaching its practical limit.

There is no single numeric threshold to apply to every Remote Play Together session because Steam’s cited guidance does not publish a universal bandwidth or latency requirement. Treat persistent stutter as a signal to reduce host load and improve the network path rather than chasing an invented number.

Privacy and control during play

Steam’s Remote Play design streams the game view rather than exposing the host’s desktop. Even so, the host should close private documents, notifications, and unrelated applications before inviting friends, because anything deliberately shown inside the game or overlay can still be visible to participants.

Use the Remote Play panel as the control point for guest input. Give keyboard and mouse access only when necessary, remove it when a player leaves, and review controller assignments after someone disconnects and rejoins. These controls are especially useful in a relaxed game where players may pause to chat or change activities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A low-friction cozy co-op routine

  1. Agree on the game and tone. Decide whether the group wants Spiritfarer’s gentle two-player routines or Unrailed!’s faster teamwork before anyone downloads anything.
  2. Check the store listing together. Confirm Remote Play Together support, local player count, and controller notes.
  3. Prepare inputs before the call. Connect controllers, label or identify them, and decide whether anyone needs keyboard sharing.
  4. Start with a short technical check. Launch the game, invite one guest, assign the player slot, and play for a few minutes before inviting additional players.
  5. Keep communication simple. In a calm management game, agree who handles which activity; in a time-pressured game, call out resource and track needs briefly and clearly.
  6. Protect the host’s headroom. Avoid downloads and close unnecessary programs before the session becomes busy.
  7. End access deliberately. Revoke keyboard and mouse sharing, close the game when finished, and remove any controller assignment that should not persist for the next session.

Which setup is right for your group?

For two people who want a calm, conversation-friendly evening, use a supported two-player title such as Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition, connect one controller per player, and leave keyboard sharing off. For a larger group that enjoys coordination and quick decisions, Unrailed! supports up to four-player local and online co-op, lists Remote Play Together, and is designed around controller-based teamwork.

In either case, the essential sequence is the same: verify the feature on the Steam store page, launch the game on the host PC, open the overlay with Shift+Tab, invite the Steam Friend from the Friends List, accept in chat, assign every input device, and adjust sharing permissions before play begins.
