Add compatible accessories to Apple Home, give them names you can say aloud, and ask Siri to control them or run a scene. Use an automation instead when you want an action to happen on a schedule or in response to a trigger such as someone arriving, a sensor detecting movement, or another accessory changing state.

What Siri can do in Apple Home

Siri can control and query accessories configured in Apple Home and activate scenes. Depending on what each accessory exposes through its Home integration, you can switch devices on or off, ask about their status, or request a coordinated set of actions. Apple documents examples such as asking whether a light is on or whether a door is locked.

Voice control can come from a supported Apple device. A HomePod or HomePod mini is useful when you want hands-free control in a room, but it is not a universal requirement for every Siri command.

Set up accessories so Siri can recognize them

  1. Check compatibility and connection. Confirm that the accessory supports Apple Home/HomeKit or Matter, is powered on, and is connected to the network. Matter support alone does not guarantee that every function will be exposed in Apple Home.
  2. Add the accessory in Home. On iPhone, open the Home app, tap the add button, choose Add Accessory, then follow the onscreen instructions. Complete any setup steps requested by the accessory maker.
  3. Give it a clear name and room. Choose a distinct, natural phrase such as “porch light” or “bedroom lamp,” then assign the accessory to the room where it belongs. Apple says the name assigned during Home setup can be used with Siri. Avoid duplicate or confusing names.
  4. Use zones for groups of rooms. If you have several rooms, group them into a zone such as “downstairs.” Apple’s Home setup guidance describes zones as a way to organize rooms, which can make area-level control easier.
  5. Try one simple command. Test a direct request before building scenes or automations. If Siri cannot identify the accessory, check its name, room assignment, connection, and the controls its Home integration actually provides.

Apple’s instructions for adding accessories and organizing rooms and zones are in Set up accessories with Home on iPhone.

Choose a scene for a spoken request or an automation for a trigger

Make a scene for a group of actions

A scene coordinates actions on multiple accessories under one name. Create one when you want to start those actions together by tapping in Home or asking Siri—for example, a “Good Night” scene that turns off lights and locks the front door. Apple also describes a “Morning” scene that starts audio.

In the Home app, create a scene, give it a recognizable name, select the accessories and actions, and save it. The exact options depend on the accessories available in your home. Once it is saved, ask Siri to set or activate the scene by name.

Make an automation for an event or schedule

An automation runs when its trigger occurs, without requiring you to say a command at that moment. Apple lists triggers including time and day, a person arriving or leaving, sensor detection, and another accessory’s action. Use one when you want the same action to happen routinely or in response to a condition.

In Home, start an automation and choose the trigger offered for your setup; then select the accessories and actions to run. Options can vary with your devices and software. Location-based automations depend on the relevant invited users having location sharing set up as Apple specifies.

When do you need a home hub?

Do not assume every Siri command needs a HomePod or Apple TV—or that every accessory works without one. Requirements depend on the accessory, its connection type, your software version, and whether you need local control, remote access, or automations.

  • Remote access and automations: Apple describes a home hub as providing features such as remote control and automations. Its hub setup guidance covers HomePod and Apple TV.
  • Matter: Apple’s general Home setup guidance says Matter accessories require a home hub. Requirements can differ by iOS version and by the feature you want; check current Apple guidance for your exact iPhone, accessory, and use case rather than treating one statement as universal.
  • Thread: Apple says Thread-based accessories require Thread-capable infrastructure for the relevant setup. Its hub guidance specifies a Thread-enabled hub for Thread-enabled Matter accessories.
  • Hands-free voice control: HomePod or HomePod mini can serve as a room-based Siri endpoint and, in supported configurations, a hub. If you are happy speaking to Siri through another Apple device, a HomePod is not automatically necessary.

Apple’s current setup pages explain hub capabilities and setup in Set up your HomePod, HomePod mini or Apple TV as a home hub and Set up accessories with Home on iPhone. HomePod and Apple TV availability varies by country or region.

Check accessory compatibility before choosing devices

Look for explicit Apple Home/HomeKit or Matter compatibility, then verify that the particular control you need is supported in Home. For a Matter accessory, also check whether it uses Thread and what infrastructure the intended feature requires. A device’s label alone does not establish that all its functions work with Siri.

Apple Home can include categories such as lights, plugs, thermostats, locks, and sensors, but the accessory maker and Apple Home integration determine the controls Siri can use. Apple’s Home overview describes supported Home concepts and integrations.

What Apple says about privacy

Apple says HomeKit commands are sent end-to-end encrypted and authenticated from the user’s device to the home hub using Apple Identity Service, then forwarded to the accessory using HomeKit Accessory Protocol or Matter. Apple also says Siri receives minimal home configuration details for recognizing commands. This describes Apple’s stated architecture; it is not a blanket guarantee about every accessory maker, account, network, or third-party service.
