To archive a webpage in Firefox with SingleFileZ, let the page finish loading, then click the SingleFileZ button in the extension toolbar and wait for the save to complete. It creates one self-extracting HTML file that is also a valid ZIP archive containing page resources.

There is an important status caveat: the maintainer says SingleFileZ has been completely merged into SingleFile. The Firefox Add-ons listing still shows SingleFileZ version 1.4.45, last updated February 15, 2024. Check the current listing before installing; if SingleFileZ is unavailable, use SingleFile’s “File format” options to save self-extracting files.

Save the current webpage as one file

  1. Open the page in Firefox and wait until it has fully loaded. If the page is still populating images or other content, give it time before capturing.

  2. Click the SingleFileZ button in Firefox’s extension toolbar. Wait while the extension processes the page and saves the file. If you need to stop an in-progress save, click the button again to cancel.

  3. Look for the downloaded file in Firefox’s configured download location. The result is a single HTML file that is also a valid ZIP containing page resources.

Firefox’s general reason for saving a page locally is straightforward: you can read it later when you are not connected to the internet. The archive is a snapshot, not a guarantee that every interactive feature of the original site will keep working.

Save with a shortcut or choose what to capture

Keyboard shortcut

SingleFileZ provides a customizable Ctrl+Shift+Y shortcut to save the current tab or selected tabs. If that shortcut conflicts with another Firefox or system shortcut, change it in the extension’s shortcut settings.

Context menu choices

Right-click the extension toolbar button or the webpage to open its context menu. Depending on what you want to preserve, the listing describes options to save the current tab, selected content, a selected frame, or a selected link. You can also process selected tabs, unpinned tabs, or all tabs in one action.

Automatic saving

If you want captures to happen without clicking for each page, the context menu can enable auto-save after pages load for the current tab, unpinned tabs, or all tabs. Use this selectively: saving many pages can take time and may consume CPU and disk space.

Change destinations and archive settings

To open the options page, right-click the toolbar button and choose “Manage extension.” The listing names optional destinations under “Destination,” including Google Drive and GitHub. These are optional settings, not prerequisites for saving a local archive. The maintainer says SingleFileZ processes pages in the browser and does not upload data to third-party servers; choosing an external destination changes where you store the resulting file.

The saved file may include resources such as images, stylesheets, frame contents, and fonts that appear on a page even if they are not currently displayed or cached. That can improve the archive’s completeness, but it can also lengthen processing.

Open the saved HTML/ZIP file

SingleFileZ’s output combines an HTML page with ZIP-format resources. JavaScript must be enabled to open saved pages. Local-file restrictions vary by browser, so a file that opens in one browser may not open the same way in another:

  • Firefox: The maintainer’s FAQ says the file can be viewed from the filesystem.

  • Safari: The FAQ points to “Disable Local File Restrictions” in the Develop menu.

  • Chrome: The FAQ says SingleFileZ must be installed to open these files from the filesystem.

The FAQ says these local-file restrictions do not apply when the saved page is hosted on a server. Do not assume that every browser can open the archive directly from disk without configuration.

Fix slow saves or missing page content

Saving takes a long time or uses too much CPU

The maintainer says the default configuration is optimized to produce small pages, which can make saving considerably slower. In the extension options, try disabling “HTML content > remove hidden elements” and “Stylesheets > remove unused styles” to reduce processing time and CPU use.

Images or frames are missing

Some pages defer loading images or place content in frames. Disabling “Images > save deferred images” or “HTML content > remove frames” may make processing faster, but the maintainer warns that images or frames can then be absent from the saved result. If completeness matters, leave those options enabled and allow the capture more time.

The extension does nothing on a page

Browsers block extensions from running on some browser-controlled or otherwise restricted pages for security reasons. If SingleFileZ will not run there, it may be a browser restriction rather than a problem with your settings. Try an ordinary website tab where extensions are allowed.

The archive is incomplete despite a successful save

Check whether the source page had finished loading and whether the settings that skip deferred images, frames, hidden elements, or unused stylesheets are enabled. A saved file can only preserve resources the extension can access and process; pages that depend on live server data, scripts, or restricted resources may not behave exactly like the original.

If your goal is a screenshot or PDF rather than an offline webpage archive, ScreenshotNeo can return a capture with one request. It is a screenshot API, not a replacement for a self-contained SingleFileZ archive.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API options. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for free.
