You can give a Shopify storefront a substantial visual and content refresh without installing a new theme. Duplicate the current theme, open the copy in Online Store → Edit theme, then use the theme editor, Sidekick, and Shopify Magic to adjust global styles, rearrange existing sections, draft copy, and (when eligible) generate custom theme blocks. You remain responsible for reviewing every suggestion, testing desktop and mobile layouts, and saving the finished theme manually.
What you can redesign while keeping the same theme
A Shopify theme is a framework of sections, blocks, settings, templates, styles, and code. The theme editor exposes many of those controls without requiring a code edit. Shopify describes the editor as a way to change a store’s design through sections and settings while leaving the installed theme in place.
AI does not replace that editor or perform a guaranteed, one-click redesign. Instead, the tools help with four distinct jobs:
| Redesign job | Primary tool | What changes | What you must verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Global visual refresh | Theme editor and Sidekick | Colors, typography, spacing, and other global theme settings | Contrast, hierarchy, brand consistency, and every template that inherits the settings |
| Page composition | Theme editor and Sidekick | Existing sections or blocks can be moved, hidden, or removed | Order, navigation flow, empty gaps, and mobile stacking |
| New or revised copy | Shopify Magic generate-text control | Draft headings, descriptions, and other supported text fields | Product facts, claims, tone, legal wording, and readability |
| New design element | Theme block generation | An AI-generated block with editable settings inside a compatible section | Generated code, accessibility, performance, responsive behavior, and controls |
| Marketing imagery | Shopify Magic image generation where available | Hero or other promotional visuals | Quality, accurate representation, licensing suitability, and the saved version |
These capabilities are separate. A plan that includes one Magic feature does not automatically guarantee access to every other feature, and an existing theme may support section editing without supporting generated blocks.

- With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.
- Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
- Process chip cards in just two seconds.
- Get your money as soon as the next business day.
- Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.
Start safely: duplicate the live theme
Make a backup before asking AI to alter anything. In the Shopify admin, open Online Store → Themes, use the actions menu for the current theme, and choose the option to duplicate it. Give the copy a name that identifies the redesign and date. Work only in that duplicate until the review is complete.
- The published theme remains available as an immediate fallback.
- You can compare the duplicate’s preview with the live storefront before publishing.
- If a generated block causes a problem, you can discard the duplicate rather than trying to reconstruct the original.
Duplicating does not create a second live storefront. It creates an unpublished theme that you can edit and preview. Continue to treat the published theme as the source of truth for inventory, checkout, apps, and customer-facing claims while you work.
Open the editor and establish the design direction
- In Online Store → Themes, locate the duplicated theme.
- Select Edit theme (the theme editor) for that copy.
- Set the preview to the home page or another representative template. Check desktop and mobile views as you work.
- Open the global settings area and review colors, typography, spacing, buttons, cards, and layout controls before changing individual sections.
- If you want Sidekick to act on the theme, open Sidekick from within the theme editor. Shopify’s guidance says you must be in the editor for Sidekick to make suggestions or changes to a theme.
Describe the outcome and the constraints in plain language. A useful direction identifies the audience, visual mood, colors, type hierarchy, density, and what must remain untouched. For example:
Refresh the color palette and typography to feel calm and premium for first-time skincare buyers. Keep the current theme structure, product information, navigation, and existing button labels. Use a high-contrast body text color and a restrained accent color.
Apply changes in small groups rather than requesting a complete makeover at once. After each group, inspect the preview and note which setting changed. This makes an unwanted result easier to reverse and prevents a global style change from obscuring a section-specific issue.
Use Sidekick to change existing settings and sections
Global settings: colors, fonts, and spacing
Sidekick can suggest or apply changes to global theme settings. Ask for a concrete transformation, then specify limits such as “do not change the page structure” or “keep all product information.” Review the proposed palette and type choices in the editor. Check headings, body text, links, buttons, sale labels, form fields, and footer text—not just the home-page hero.
Global settings can affect product, collection, search, blog, cart, and policy templates at the same time. A color that looks subtle on the home page may make a cart button difficult to distinguish, while a display font that works for a hero may reduce readability in long descriptions. Treat the preview as an inspection surface, not proof that every template is correct.
Reordering, hiding, or removing existing elements
Sidekick can work with sections and blocks already present in the theme. A request such as the following gives it a specific structural task:

- With Square Handheld, you can accept payments, take tableside orders, or scan barcodes anywhere. With a slim design and comfortable grip, the POS is easy to carry in your palm or pocket. Square Handheld is designed to withstand water splashes and dust. Add an optional protective case for accidental drops. A long-lasting battery and offline payments let you keep selling.
- Slim, pocketable, and lightweight so you can accept payments wherever your customers are.
- Take tableside orders, bust lines, or use the built-in barcode scanner, all with one sleek device.
- A battery that can power through your shift and offline payments let you keep selling, even if your internet is down.
- Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one simple rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts required.
Reorder the home page so the “New arrivals” collection appears before the testimonials section. Hide the newsletter section on this page only. Keep the announcement bar and all product information.
After the change:
- Confirm that the intended section moved, rather than a similarly named section elsewhere.
- Look for blank space left by a hidden block and remove or adjust any resulting padding.
- Check links, buttons, collection handles, images, and dynamic sources in the moved section.
- Switch to mobile preview. A desktop order may create an awkward mobile sequence or an excessively long first screen.
Sidekick’s edits are not automatically live. You must manually save the theme changes in the editor, and the duplicate still needs to be published before customers see it.
Generate accurate copy with Shopify Magic
Where generation is available
Shopify Magic’s generate-text control appears only in supported theme text fields. If a field has no generation control, the feature is not available there; do not assume that every heading, label, or app-provided field can be generated from the editor.
Click the generate-text control in the supported field, provide context, review the suggestion, edit it, and then save the field. Supply verified facts instead of asking the model to infer them:
Write a concise hero heading and subheading for first-time trail runners. Use these verified facts: the shoe weighs 280 g per shoe, has a waterproof membrane, and is available in sizes 6–13. Do not promise injury prevention or all-day comfort. Keep the phrase “Find your footing.”
Useful context includes the audience, product category, differentiators, measurements, materials, compatibility, delivery limits, brand vocabulary, prohibited claims, and a target length. Asking for “short,” “one sentence,” or a character limit helps, but you still need to edit the result for your storefront’s voice.
Fact-check every generated sentence
AI-generated copy can introduce benefits, guarantees, specifications, or usage claims that do not apply to your product. Verify:
- Numbers, dimensions, ingredients, materials, certifications, and compatibility statements.
- Shipping, returns, warranty, delivery-time, and availability language.
- Health, safety, environmental, comparative, and performance claims.
- Names of collections, variants, colors, sizes, and customer segments.
- Links and calls to action after you edit the wording.
Shopify says Magic features are free regardless of subscription plan in general, but access to individual Magic features can vary. Availability of the text control is therefore a capability to check in the specific store, not a promise that every field or plan includes it.
Generate a custom block without replacing the theme
Eligibility and support boundaries
Theme block generation is available for Shopify Theme Store themes and for eligible third-party themes that have been purchased. Shopify lists Free trial, Basic, Growth, Advanced, and Plus plans, and excludes Starter for this capability. Vintage themes are unsupported. Plans, theme compatibility, and feature availability can change, so verify the current eligibility shown in the store before planning around generated blocks.

- Effortless payments and printing: Accept card payments and print payment receipts on the spot with the built-in 40 mm thermal printer.
- Faster sales processing: Use pre-set menus and catalogs to make transactions faster and smoother for you and your customers.
- Reliable and portable: Featuring a 6.5" HD touchscreen made from Corning Gorilla Glass and a powerful battery that lasts all day.

The feature works only where the existing section supports theme blocks. In the editor, choose Add block → Generate in a compatible section. If that command is absent, use an existing block, choose another compatible section, or continue with ordinary theme customization instead of trying to force the feature.

- Open the duplicated theme in Online Store → Edit theme.
- Navigate to the page and section where the element belongs.
- Select Add block → Generate.
- Describe the content, layout, responsive behavior, and editable controls. Shopify recommends a prompt of at least five words; a detailed brief is more useful than the minimum.
- Preview the proposed block on desktop and mobile.
- Test every generated setting, including image pickers, text fields, button labels, links, alignment, spacing, and visibility options.
- Keep the block only after reviewing its output. Otherwise discard it or refine the prompt.
For example:
Create a responsive feature block with three benefit columns, an optional image above the columns, editable heading and body text, a button with an editable link, and a mobile layout that stacks each benefit vertically. Match the current theme’s spacing and button style.
Generated blocks are code. Shopify warns that code can contain errors or fail accessibility and performance expectations. Review semantic headings, keyboard focus, color contrast, alternative text, image behavior, loading impact, and layout at narrow widths. Shopify Support and third-party theme developers do not support troubleshooting generated-block code. If a block causes a serious issue, deleting its generated file may be necessary; keep the duplicate and record what you changed so you can remove the correct file.
Use generated imagery carefully
Shopify Magic can assist with hero banners and other marketing visuals where the image feature is available. Treat the result as a draft asset: inspect composition, legibility behind text, product accuracy, skin tones, hands, logos, and any implied claims. A preview is not saved to the store until you explicitly save it.
Before keeping an image, check that it works in the chosen aspect ratio and crop on both desktop and mobile. Add meaningful alternative text when the image conveys information; mark a purely decorative image as decorative according to the theme’s controls. Do not let an AI-created scene imply that a product includes an accessory or achieves a result that it does not.
Preview, test, and save in a controlled sequence
Use this review order so a visual improvement does not hide a functional regression:
- Global style pass: Check color contrast, typography scale, button states, form fields, and spacing across representative templates.
- Structure pass: Confirm section order, visibility, headings, collection links, product cards, and navigation.
- Copy pass: Compare every generated statement with the product source of truth and remove unsupported claims.
- Block-code pass: Test generated controls, keyboard navigation, focus visibility, image alternatives, and responsive behavior.
- Commerce pass: Open products, variant selectors, cart, search, account links, policy links, and any app embeds affected by the layout.
- Device pass: Preview desktop and mobile, then use a real phone or narrow browser window for long headings, tables, buttons, and stacked blocks.
- Save pass: Manually save the reviewed changes in the theme editor. Sidekick’s suggestions are not live until saved.
Save in logical checkpoints rather than after every keystroke. If a later change is wrong, you can identify the last good checkpoint in the duplicate. Keep the original published theme untouched until the complete review is finished.
Publish or roll back without losing the original
When the duplicate passes review, return to Online Store → Themes and use its actions to publish it. Publishing replaces the currently live theme; it does not merge selected changes into the old theme. Record the old theme’s name and publication time before switching so your rollback decision is unambiguous.
If customers encounter a problem, publish the previous theme from the Themes page. For a localized issue in the duplicate, first remove or revise the offending section or generated block, preview again, and save. If generated code is responsible and cannot be repaired safely, delete the generated file as Shopify advises, or abandon the duplicate and start from the untouched copy. Do not experiment directly on the live theme when a backup is available.

Prompt patterns that produce controllable results
Style direction
Make the global style feel warm and editorial for home cooks: cream background, dark readable body text, one terracotta accent, modest corner radius, and a clear heading hierarchy. Keep the existing layout and all product details.
Page structure
Move the “Best sellers” collection directly below the hero, hide the press-logo section on the home page, and keep the announcement bar, navigation, and newsletter signup unchanged.
Supported text field
Write a 12-word maximum product-card description for commuters. Use only these facts: recycled nylon shell, 20-liter capacity, padded laptop sleeve. Avoid claims about durability or weatherproofing.
Generated block
Create a responsive comparison block with an editable title, two editable columns, icon or image picker per column, body text, and an optional button link. Stack columns on mobile and inherit the current theme’s typography.
Each pattern states the target, gives factual constraints, and identifies what must not change. That makes the result easier to inspect than a broad request to “make my store look better.”

Sidekick does nothing
Confirm that the theme editor is open and Sidekick was launched there. The documented requirement is that you be currently in the theme editor for theme suggestions or changes. If you are in another admin area, return to the duplicate theme’s editor and try again.
The generated-text control is missing
The field may not be supported. Enter the copy manually, use a supported field, or edit the theme through its normal settings. Do not assume a missing control indicates a broken store.
“Generate” is missing from Add block
Check the section, theme type, plan, and theme purchase status. Generated blocks require a compatible section, supported Theme Store or purchased eligible third-party theme, and a plan other than Starter among the plans Shopify lists. Vintage themes are not supported.
The new block looks fine on desktop but breaks on mobile
Return to the generated block, test its controls, and inspect narrow widths. Long headings, fixed-width images, side-by-side columns, and buttons with long labels are frequent pressure points. Refine the prompt to require stacking and flexible sizing; discard the block if the generated code remains unreliable.

Replace it with verified product facts. Review every generated sentence before saving, especially benefits, guarantees, certifications, health statements, and delivery promises. Responsibility for published text remains with the merchant.
A generated block causes a performance or accessibility concern
Inspect markup, headings, focus order, contrast, alternative text, and unnecessary scripts or assets. Since support teams and third-party theme developers do not troubleshoot generated-block code, remove the generated file or revert to the untouched duplicate when you cannot validate the fix.
Choosing the right AI route for each redesign request
| If you need to… | Use… | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Change the overall visual language | Theme editor global settings, optionally guided by Sidekick | Affects multiple templates; inspect all of them |
| Change the order or visibility of existing content | Sidekick or manual section and block controls | Works with what the theme already exposes |
| Draft a heading or description | Magic’s generate-text control in a supported field | Field support varies; factual review is mandatory |
| Add a new feature area | Add block → Generate in an eligible compatible section | Plan, theme, and section eligibility apply; code needs technical review |
| Create a promotional visual | Magic image generation where available | Preview is not saved automatically; inspect accuracy and suitability |
You do not need a new theme merely to refresh colors, fonts, spacing, page order, supported copy, or eligible blocks. A new theme becomes a separate decision only when the installed theme lacks the structure, settings, or compatibility required for the experience you want.
Final pre-publish checklist
- The original live theme is still available as the fallback.
- All Sidekick changes were manually saved in the duplicate.
- Global settings were checked on home, product, collection, search, cart, blog, and policy templates as applicable.
- Every generated text claim matches verified product and business information.
- Generated blocks were tested on desktop and mobile, including every editable control.
- Accessibility basics—contrast, headings, keyboard focus, labels, and alternative text—were reviewed.
- Images are accurate, appropriate, and saved intentionally.
- Navigation, product links, variant selection, cart, search, forms, and app embeds still work.
- The team knows which theme will be republished if a post-launch problem appears.
The safest AI redesign is incremental: duplicate first, change one class of element at a time, preview continuously, fact-check all generated language, inspect generated code, and publish only after the duplicate behaves like a complete storefront.
