Samsung Secure Folder gives selected apps and files a protected space on a compatible Galaxy phone or tablet. Set it up with a PIN, password, pattern, or supported biometric, then decide whether to copy or move each file: moving removes it from its usual location. Keep a separate copy of important items, since recovery and device-transfer options vary by region and software version.
What Secure Folder protects—and what it does not
Samsung describes Secure Folder as a private area protected by Samsung Knox, with stored data encrypted by the platform. You can protect access with a PIN, password, pattern, or supported biometric method. This is an access-controlled space on your device, not a guarantee against every possible attack.
Hiding the Secure Folder shortcut makes it less visible in the Apps screen or Quick Settings on supported interfaces. It does not replace the folder’s lock. Keep authentication enabled even if you hide the shortcut.
Set up Secure Folder
- Open Settings > Security and privacy > More security settings > Secure Folder. On older One UI versions or some regional variants, look under Biometrics and security > Secure Folder. If neither path appears, search Settings for “Secure Folder.”
- Sign in to your Samsung account, or create one, and follow the setup prompts.
- Choose a lock method: PIN, password, pattern, or a supported biometric. If offered, enable Reset with Samsung account so you can reset forgotten credentials after signing into that account.
- Review the automatic-lock and notification settings before adding private content.
Availability depends on the device and software. Samsung Australia says its feature guidance applies to Australian variants running Android Nougat 7.0 or later; that regional statement does not guarantee Secure Folder is available on every Galaxy device. Some older models may no longer support it. Check Samsung support for your country and model if the setting is missing.

Move photos and files into Secure Folder
You can add images, video, audio, or documents from within Secure Folder, or move eligible items directly from Gallery or My Files.
Add files from Secure Folder
- Open Secure Folder and tap More options > Add files.
- Select the items you want to add.
- Choose Copy or Move, then confirm.
Move an item from Gallery or My Files
Select the item in Gallery or My Files and choose Move to Secure Folder, if that option is available on your device.

To move a file back out, open My Files inside Secure Folder and move it to the desired location. For images and video, Gallery inside Secure Folder can also be used. Samsung Canada notes that an item originally stored on an SD card may be moved out to a new folder in internal storage.
Add apps—and understand the separate copy
- Open Secure Folder and tap the plus or Add apps control.
- Select an app already installed on the device, or download an app from Play Store or Galaxy Store while inside Secure Folder.
Adding an existing app creates a separate copy inside Secure Folder, with its own account, settings, and data. It does not simply put a lock around the app instance outside the folder. If you want the app to exist only in Secure Folder, uninstall the outside version separately; Samsung UK says adding the folder copy does not remove it automatically.

Set privacy and access behavior
- Automatic locking: Choose an interval that suits how often you leave the device unattended. A shorter interval means the folder relocks sooner but may require more frequent authentication.
- Notifications: Control whether app notifications appear while Secure Folder is locked. Check the behavior with the apps you use, since notifications can reveal information even when the folder itself is locked.
- Shortcut visibility: Hide or show Secure Folder from the Apps screen, or use its Quick Settings toggle where supported. Hiding is discretion, not a lock or encryption setting.
- Encrypt option: Samsung Canada documents an enhanced Encrypt option. Its guidance says apps and their notifications stop working while the folder is encrypted and resume after decryption. If you use this option, account for that interruption.
Recover access and avoid losing files
If you enabled Reset with Samsung account during setup, Samsung says you can reset forgotten Secure Folder credentials after signing in to that account. Samsung Canada warns that without this recovery option, forgetting the credential may leave removal and recreation of Secure Folder as the only option. Samsung UK also warns that clearing Secure Folder app data deletes the folder’s contents.

- Keep another copy of important originals before moving them into Secure Folder.
- Do not clear Secure Folder app data as a routine troubleshooting step unless you understand that it deletes the contents.
- Before changing phones, check Samsung support for your country, device, and software version. Samsung Canada says new Secure Folder backups are no longer supported, though previous backups can still be restored, and documents Smart Switch transfer. Samsung Australia says Secure Folder data and apps cannot be transferred to another device and recommends keeping a copy elsewhere. These regional instructions differ, so do not assume backup or transfer will work for your device.
Choose the right settings for your situation
