To use regex to extract email addresses from a string, search globally with a practical pattern that targets common ASCII-style addresses. The pattern below finds multiple addresses inside prose without consuming surrounding punctuation, but a match only indicates email-like syntax—it does not prove that a domain or mailbox exists.
Key takeaways
- Use a global or all-match operation such as Python
re.findall(), JavaScript’sgflag, or .NETRegex.Matches()to return every email-like address. - The practical regex supports common addresses such as
first.last+tag@example.co.ukand rejects ordinary leading, trailing, or consecutive dots in the local part. - Regex extraction does not prove that an address exists, accepts mail, is deliverable, or belongs to the person who supplied it.
- Quoted local parts, domain literals, and internationalized email addresses require a standards-aware parser or a deliberate Unicode and policy implementation.
- Lookbehind in the recommended pattern is not supported by every regex engine; RE2-based languages such as Go require boundary checks in application code.
How to use regex to extract email addresses from a string
For ordinary free-form text, use this practical extraction pattern and run it with the language’s “find all” operation:
(?<![A-Za-z0-9.!#$%&'*+/=?^_`{|}~-])
[A-Za-z0-9!#$%&'*+/=?^_`{|}~-]+
(?:.[A-Za-z0-9!#$%&'*+/=?^_`{|}~-]+)*
@
(?:[A-Za-z0-9](?:[A-Za-z0-9-]{0,61}[A-Za-z0-9])?.)+
[A-Za-z0-9](?:[A-Za-z0-9-]{0,61}[A-Za-z0-9])?
(?![A-Za-z0-9.!#$%&'*+/=?^_`{|}~-])
Remove the insignificant whitespace and line breaks when placing the pattern in a regex literal or configuration:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute(?<![A-Za-z0-9.!#$%&'*+/=?^_`{|}~-])[A-Za-z0-9!#$%&'*+/=?^_`{|}~-]+(?:.[A-Za-z0-9!#$%&'*+/=?^_`{|}~-]+)*@(?:[A-Za-z0-9](?:[A-Za-z0-9-]{0,61}[A-Za-z0-9])?.)+[A-Za-z0-9](?:[A-Za-z0-9-]{0,61}[A-Za-z0-9])?(?![A-Za-z0-9.!#$%&'*+/=?^_`{|}~-])
The pattern is intentionally a practical extractor, not a complete implementation of Internet mail syntax. The pattern is suited to logs, scraped text, support tickets, documents, chat messages, CSV fields, and email bodies containing familiar dot-atom addresses such as:

Extraction means finding substrings inside larger text. Extraction is different from validating that one complete input is an acceptable address, and both are different from proving that a mailbox is usable.
What does the practical email-extraction regex do?
The pattern has four logical parts: a left boundary guard, a common local part, an @ separator and DNS-style domain, and a right boundary guard.
How does the local-part expression work?
[A-Za-z0-9!#$%&'*+/=?^_`{|}~-]+(?:.[A-Za-z0-9!#$%&'*+/=?^_`{|}~-]+)*
The local part is the text before @. The first character class permits common unquoted ASCII characters, including plus signs used for tags such as user+newsletter@example.com. The repeated group permits internal dot-separated segments.
Requiring a nonempty segment on both sides of each dot prevents these ordinary malformed forms from matching:
.leadingdot@example.comtrailingdot.@example.comalice..double@example.com
This is still not the complete local-part grammar. RFC 5322’s address grammar also describes quoted strings, comments, and other forms that a practical prose extractor commonly excludes.
Why does the domain expression repeat labels?
(?:[A-Za-z0-9](?:[A-Za-z0-9-]{0,61}[A-Za-z0-9])?.)+[A-Za-z0-9](?:[A-Za-z0-9-]{0,61}[A-Za-z0-9])?
The domain is made of one or more dot-separated labels. Each ordinary label starts and ends with an ASCII letter or digit, while hyphens may appear internally. Repeating the label group supports both example.com and multi-label domains such as mail.example.co.uk.
The expression therefore avoids ordinary malformed domain labels such as alice@-example.com and alice@example-.com. The expression does not perform DNS lookup, check the public suffix list, or prove that the domain accepts mail.
Why use explicit boundary guards instead of b?
(?<![A-Za-z0-9.!#$%&'*+/=?^_`{|}~-]) ... (?![A-Za-z0-9.!#$%&'*+/=?^_`{|}~-])
The boundary guards reduce partial matches inside a larger email-like token. They also avoid depending on how a particular regex engine defines a “word character.” Python documents b as a boundary between w and W, and Unicode and punctuation can make that behavior less intuitive than an explicit boundary.
The guards help return alice@example.com from text such as (alice@example.com) or alice@example.com, without including the closing punctuation. Formal email syntax can give punctuation a different meaning, so prose extraction necessarily prioritizes common useful matches over complete parsing of every legal mailbox form.

How do you extract every email address in Python?
In Python, use re.findall() for the matched strings and re.finditer() when you also need positions or surrounding context. Python’s regular-expression API distinguishes search(), match(), fullmatch(), findall(), and finditer().
import re
EMAIL_RE = re.compile(
r"(?<![A-Za-z0-9.!#$%&'*+/=?^_`{|}~-])"
r"[A-Za-z0-9!#$%&'*+/=?^_`{|}~-]+"
r"(?:.[A-Za-z0-9!#$%&'*+/=?^_`{|}~-]+)*"
r"@"
r"(?:[A-Za-z0-9](?:[A-Za-z0-9-]{0,61}[A-Za-z0-9])?.)+"
r"[A-Za-z0-9](?:[A-Za-z0-9-]{0,61}[A-Za-z0-9])?"
r"(?![A-Za-z0-9.!#$%&'*+/=?^_`{|}~-])"
)
text = """
Contact Alice at alice@example.com or
support-team+sales@mail.example.org.
"""
emails = EMAIL_RE.findall(text)
print(emails)
Expected result:
['alice@example.com', 'support-team+sales@mail.example.org']
Use a raw Python string such as r"..." so Python’s string parser does not consume backslashes before the regular-expression engine sees them. Raw strings make patterns containing escapes such as . easier to read and maintain.

for match in EMAIL_RE.finditer(text):
print(match.group(), match.start(), match.end())
finditer() is useful when an application needs to highlight addresses, extract the text around each address, store character offsets, or process results incrementally instead of creating only a list of strings.
How do you remove duplicate addresses while preserving order?
unique_emails = list(dict.fromkeys(emails))
This removes exact duplicates while retaining the first-seen order in modern Python. Do not automatically lowercase the entire address. The domain is generally case-insensitive, but SMTP treats the local part as technically case-sensitive, and provider-specific normalization is not universal. Preserve the original value and define a separate comparison policy.
OWASP’s email validation guidance discusses normalization, case handling, Unicode, and verification risks.
How do you extract multiple email addresses in JavaScript?
In JavaScript, add the g flag and use String.prototype.match() or matchAll() to retrieve multiple matches. MDN documents JavaScript RegExp flags and matching behavior.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
const emailRegex =
/(?<![A-Za-z0-9.!#$%&'*+/=?^_`{|}~-])[A-Za-z0-9!#$%&'*+/=?^_`{|}~-]+(?:.[A-Za-z0-9!#$%&'*+/=?^_`{|}~-]+)*@(?:[A-Za-z0-9](?:[A-Za-z0-9-]{0,61}[A-Za-z0-9])?.)+[A-Za-z0-9](?:[A-Za-z0-9-]{0,61}[A-Za-z0-9])?(?![A-Za-z0-9.!#$%&'*+/=?^_`{|}~-])/g;
const text =
"Write to alice@example.com or support-team+sales@mail.example.org.";
const emails = text.match(emailRegex) ?? [];
console.log(emails);
If the g flag is missing, match() returns only the first match. A runtime must also support lookbehind for the recommended pattern. For maximum JavaScript compatibility, use the version without lookbehind and perform boundary checks in code:
const emailRegex =
/[A-Za-z0-9!#$%&'*+/=?^_`{|}~-]+(?:.[A-Za-z0-9!#$%&'*+/=?^_`{|}~-]+)*@(?:[A-Za-z0-9](?:[A-Za-z0-9-]{0,61}[A-Za-z0-9])?.)+[A-Za-z0-9](?:[A-Za-z0-9-]{0,61}[A-Za-z0-9])?/g;
The compatible alternative can match an address inside a larger token or include a case that needs policy filtering. Use adjacent-character checks when scanning URLs, markup, source code, or machine-generated identifiers.
How do you extract all email addresses in C# and .NET?
In .NET, use Regex.Matches() for every match rather than Regex.Match() for only the first match. Set a timeout when processing untrusted input. Microsoft’s .NET regular-expression documentation covers the match APIs.

The timeout matters because a poorly designed backtracking pattern can consume excessive CPU on hostile input. Microsoft warns that unrestricted regular-expression processing of untrusted input can create denial-of-service risks.

What is the simplest regex for controlled text?
For introductory code or controlled input where false positives are acceptable, this shorter pattern is easier to understand:
[A-Za-z0-9._%+-]+@[A-Za-z0-9.-]+.[A-Za-z]{2,}
The short pattern is not universal and should not be described as RFC-compliant. The short pattern can allow a domain label to begin or end with a hyphen, accept consecutive dots, assume an ASCII domain, require a letter-only final label, and include surrounding punctuation in edge cases. The short pattern is reasonable only when the input and acceptance policy are narrow and known.
Avoid hard-coding a list such as .(com|net|org|edu) unless the application intentionally permits only those domains. A fixed list creates false negatives. Microsoft notes that checking whether a top-level domain appears in the IANA root zone requires lookup rather than a regex-only test.
What is the difference between extracting and validating an email address?
Email extraction finds likely address-shaped substrings in arbitrary text. Full-input validation requires the entire input to match a policy. Neither operation proves that the mailbox exists or that the user controls it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Goal | Operation | Typical API |
|---|---|---|
| Find the first email-like substring | Search | Python re.search(), .NET Regex.Match() |
| Find every email-like substring | Global search | Python findall()/finditer(), JavaScript g, .NET Matches() |
| Require the complete input to be one address | Full-match validation | Python re.fullmatch() or an appropriate validation library |
| Prove mailbox ownership | Confirmation workflow | Send a verification message and require a user action |
A regex match cannot establish that the domain exists, that the domain accepts mail, that the mailbox exists, or that the user controls the address. Microsoft recommends a test email when an application needs actual confirmation.
For account creation, invitations, password recovery, or mailing-list enrollment, use syntax checks as an early filter and confirm ownership through a controlled email flow. Do not treat a successful regex match as proof of deliverability.
How should Unicode and advanced email addresses be handled?
An ASCII-only extractor misses some internationalized email addresses and intentionally excludes several formal but uncommon address forms. Decide the product’s support policy before choosing the regex.
| Address form | Example | Recommended treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Quoted local part | "quoted name"@example.com |
Use a standards-aware parser if the application must support it. |
| Domain literal | user@[IPv6:2001:db8::1] |
Do not force it into the DNS-style extractor; parse deliberately. |
| Internationalized local part | δοκιμή@example.com |
Use Unicode-aware email support and a tested parser. |
| Internationalized domain | 用户@例子.公司 |
Use IDNA/Punycode-capable domain processing where appropriate. |
RFC 6531 describes internationalized email through SMTP extensions. Unicode support also introduces normalization and visually confusable-character concerns.

- Normalize or convert the domain with an IDNA-capable library where appropriate.
- Preserve the original user-entered address for display and communication.
- Do not remove dots, rewrite plus tags, or apply provider-specific transformations unless the application explicitly owns that policy.
For practical application validation, OWASP lists 63 characters for the local part and 254 characters for the complete address as initial guidance. Treat those as application-level constraints, not a reason to make an extraction regex unmanageably complex.
Which regex engine should you use?
The recommended pattern uses lookbehind and lookahead, so the pattern cannot be copied unchanged into every language. Check the target engine’s syntax, Unicode rules, escaping, global-match API, and performance model.
| Environment | Relevant consideration | Practical choice |
|---|---|---|
Python re |
Supports the pattern’s lookaround and separate first/all/full-match APIs. | Use a raw string with findall() or finditer(). |
| Modern JavaScript | Lookbehind availability depends on the runtime; multiple matches require g. |
Use the guarded pattern where supported, or check boundaries in code. |
| .NET | Supports lookaround and provides configurable regex timeouts. | Use Regex.Matches() with a timeout for untrusted text. |
| Go and RE2-based engines | RE2 deliberately omits some backtracking-engine features, including lookaround. | Use the no-lookaround pattern and validate neighboring characters in code. |
RE2’s syntax documentation lists unsupported constructs relevant to portability. Differences also include named-group syntax, Unicode character classes, string escaping, and whether the engine uses backtracking or predictable-time matching.
How do you use the extractor in Go?
Go’s standard regular-expression engine is RE2-based, so use a version without lookbehind and inspect match boundaries separately:
var emailRE = regexp.MustCompile(
`[A-Za-z0-9!#$%&'*+/=?^_` + "`" + `{|}~-]+(?:.[A-Za-z0-9!#$%&'*+/=?^_` + "`" + `{|}~-]+)*@(?:[A-Za-z0-9](?:[A-Za-z0-9-]{0,61}[A-Za-z0-9])?.)+[A-Za-z0-9](?:[A-Za-z0-9-]{0,61}[A-Za-z0-9])?`,
)
matches := emailRE.FindAllStringIndex(text, -1)
Each result from FindAllStringIndex contains start and end offsets. Use those offsets to inspect the characters immediately before and after the match and reject a match that is embedded in a larger email-like token.
How should punctuation, HTML, URLs, and obfuscated addresses be handled?
Text around an address commonly contains punctuation, markup, or URL syntax. Extraction and cleanup should be separate steps.
- For HTML, prefer parsing visible text or examining
mailto:links instead of blindly scanning raw markup. - Decode entities where appropriate before extracting visible text.
- Do not treat URL query parameters as ordinary prose without checking context.
- Escape extracted values before inserting them into HTML, SQL, shell commands, logs, or other interpreters.
- A regex match is not an output-encoding or injection defense.
If the engine already excludes external punctuation, no cleanup is needed. If a simpler pattern leaves obvious punctuation attached, remove only characters known to be external in the application’s input:
email = email.rstrip(".,;:!?)]}>")
Do not blindly strip every punctuation character because some characters are legal in unquoted local parts.

What are the most common extraction failures?
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Only one address is returned | Using a first-match API or omitting JavaScript’s g flag. |
Use findall(), finditer(), matchAll(), or .NET Matches(). |
| Punctuation is included | The expression consumes surrounding non-whitespace characters. | Use explicit boundary guards or remove only clearly external punctuation. |
| Plus-tagged addresses are missed | The local-part character class does not include +. |
Include + in the unquoted local-part class. |
| Subdomains are missed | The domain assumes exactly one dot. | Repeat the domain-label group with (?:LABEL.)+LABEL. |
| A match appears inside a larger token | No boundary logic is applied. | Use lookaround where supported or inspect adjacent characters in code. |
| Legitimate addresses are rejected | The pattern is too strict about TLDs, Unicode, plus signs, quotes, or domain form. | Separate extraction from policy validation or use a tested parser. |
| Matching becomes slow | An overly permissive pattern uses ambiguous nested quantifiers. | Use a linear-time engine, cap input size, avoid repeated .*, or configure a timeout. |
When should you use an email parser instead of regex?
Use a tested email-address or mail-header parser when correctness matters more than finding familiar addresses in prose. A parser is the better choice for quoted local parts, comments, domain literals, internationalized addresses, standards-oriented validation, mail headers, and security-sensitive processing.
OWASP describes proper email parsing with regular expressions as very complicated and recommends rejecting clearly malformed input rather than imposing unnecessarily strict custom patterns. A modest extractor plus a policy layer is usually easier to maintain than a giant expression that claims to implement every standard rule.
For mail headers, use a MIME or header parser rather than scanning arbitrary raw headers with a free-form regex. Header syntax, display names, comments, encoded words, and address lists are separate parsing problems.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does an email regex prove that an email address is valid?
No. An email regex only identifies text that resembles an address. A match does not prove that the domain exists, accepts mail, the mailbox exists, or the user controls the address; ownership normally requires a confirmation email.
How do I extract multiple email addresses instead of only the first one?
Use the language’s all-match operation: Python re.findall() or re.finditer(), JavaScript with the g flag, or .NET Regex.Matches(). A first-match API returns only the first occurrence.
Why does the recommended regex miss Unicode email addresses?
The recommended extractor intentionally targets common ASCII-style addresses. Internationalized local parts and domains require Unicode-aware parsing, IDNA/Punycode-capable domain handling, and a policy compatible with the target mail system.
Should I lowercase every extracted email address?
No. Preserve the original address and define normalization separately. Domains are generally case-insensitive, but SMTP treats the local part as technically case-sensitive, and provider-specific transformations are not universal.
The Bottom Line
Use the practical regex for finding familiar ASCII-style email addresses inside untrusted, free-form text, and use an all-match API so every occurrence is returned. Treat the results as candidates, not proof of validity or ownership. For Unicode, quoted forms, mail headers, or security-sensitive validation, use a tested parser and a confirmation workflow.
