That prevents similarly named tests or different browser and device projects from overwriting one another. Commit the reference images with the tests and review any updated snapshots before merging.
How Playwright screenshot snapshots work
toHaveScreenshot() captures a page or locator and compares it with a reference image. On the first run, Playwright creates the baseline; later runs compare the new image against it. For a full-page capture:

Choose a monorepo snapshot layout
Playwright’s snapshotPathTemplate controls where generated snapshots go. Its tokens can include {testDir}, {testFileDir}, {testFilePath}, {testFileName}, {testName}, {arg}, {ext}, {platform}, {projectName}, and {snapshotDir}. Relative template paths resolve from the configuration directory. See the Playwright snapshotPathTemplate documentation.
One shared snapshot tree
A root-level tree is convenient when a single Playwright configuration owns tests across packages and reviewers should see visual baselines together. Keep a package-distinguishing component in the path, usually through {testFilePath} or another test-path token, so identically named tests from separate packages do not collide.
Separate snapshots by project
Playwright projects group tests with distinct configuration, such as browsers, devices, or other environments. If those configurations intentionally render different expected images, include {/projectName} in the template. Playwright sanitizes project names for filesystem use. If projects should produce equivalent output, avoid needless duplicate baselines and keep the policy consistent.

Package-local ownership
If packages have their own test directories or configuration files, preserve those package boundaries in the template or configuration location. Test paths are interpreted relative to the configured test directory, while relative template paths resolve from the config directory. Verify the actual generated paths in your repository before adopting a shared convention; there is no universal monorepo layout.

Configure snapshot paths
This example puts baselines beneath the configured test directory, separates named projects when present, and retains each test file path and screenshot argument:

});The optional slash before {projectName} is included only when the token has a value, avoiding an empty path component for an unnamed project. Before relying on a template, run a representative test and inspect where Playwright actually writes the image. Check that package, test, and project identities are sufficiently distinct for every configuration you run.

Commit and update baselines deliberately
- Run the visual test the first time to create its reference image.
- Inspect the image and confirm it represents the intended UI state.
- Commit the snapshot directory with the tests so reviewers can compare visual changes alongside source changes.
- For an intentional UI change, run
npx playwright test --update-snapshots. - Review the changed references and diffs, then commit only the accepted baseline updates.
Updating snapshots changes what the test expects; it does not establish that the UI change is correct. Keep the review of the image change as part of reviewing the code change.
Keep comparisons reliable
Playwright waits for consecutive screenshots to match when creating a reference, but this does not eliminate rendering differences between environments. Browser rendering can vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Generate baselines and compare them in the same stable environment when practical, especially in CI.
- Keep the browser and operating-system versions used by CI stable.
- Make baseline creation and CI comparison use matching browser settings and headless behavior where possible.
- Use screenshot styles or masks only for known volatile content.
- Set tolerances such as
maxDiffPixelsto an explicit acceptance policy, not to suppress broad or unexplained changes.
Troubleshoot snapshot failures
Snapshots are written to unexpected locations
Check the configured testDir, the directory containing the Playwright config, and every token in snapshotPathTemplate. Relative paths resolve from the configuration directory, and test-file paths are relative to the configured test directory. Run one test and inspect the generated path before changing the template.

Two tests or projects overwrite or share a baseline
The template is missing a distinguishing path component. Preserve the package or test-file path, and add {/projectName} when different projects need separate expected images. Re-run the tests and verify each configuration maps to its own intended reference.
CI reports a mismatch that is not visible locally
Compare the CI and local operating system, browser version, browser settings, and headless mode. Environment differences can change pixels even when the source is unchanged. Prefer generating and checking baselines in the same environment used for CI.
A snapshot changed after a UI edit
Inspect the expected image, actual image, and diff before updating. If the visual change is intended, update with npx playwright test --update-snapshots and review the new reference as a code change. If the change is unexpected, debug the page state rather than accepting the image automatically.

The mismatch is hard to trace to a particular interaction
Use Playwright Trace Viewer action screenshots and DOM snapshots to locate the state that produced the mismatch. This can help distinguish a rendering change from a navigation, interaction, or content-state difference. See Playwright Trace Viewer documentation.
