A successful page.open callback means the page loaded; it does not prove that login worked. PhantomJS is legacy software, so modern identity-provider, MFA, or CAPTCHA flows may not work reliably.
Choose the authentication method the site actually uses
Use PhantomJS only for an account and page you are authorized to access. The right setup depends on how the site authenticates you:
- HTTP authentication: Set
page.settings.userNameandpage.settings.passwordbefore the firstpage.open. - Ordinary website login form: Open the login page and automate its real fields and submit control. Selectors, redirects, and success conditions vary by site.
- Existing session: Add a valid session cookie with PhantomJS’s cookie API. Cookie domain, path, and server-side session rules must match; treat the cookie like a password.
These are distinct approaches. HTTP authentication settings do not fill in a normal HTML login form.
Set up PhantomJS and open the login page
Create one webpage instance and configure settings before opening the page. This outline checks for a load failure and sets a viewport; it deliberately leaves the form selectors and authenticated-state test for the target site.

Do not assume generic selectors such as #username or #password exist. The PhantomJS page.open documentation describes its load callback, and the WebPage API documents page automation and evaluation.
Verify authentication before rendering
A callback status of success says the URL loaded, not that credentials were accepted. After submitting a form or supplying a session cookie, wait for a condition that is meaningful for the specific site, such as:

- The browser reaches the expected post-login URL.
- An element shown only to signed-in users appears.
- The login form disappears and no authentication error is displayed.
Do not render until the condition is met. A fixed delay alone can be unreliable when the site redirects or loads content asynchronously. Keep phantom.exit() after the asynchronous work completes so the process does not close before the check and capture.
Render the authenticated page
Once the signed-in condition is confirmed, call page.render. The viewport determines the browser’s visible dimensions; clipRect can restrict the capture to a specific rectangle. A viewport-sized screenshot may omit content beyond its bounds, so set dimensions for the area you need and inspect the resulting file.

Reuse an existing session cookie when appropriate
If you already have a valid session cookie for an authorized account, PhantomJS provides cookie-management methods; its documentation prefers page.addCookie for setting a cookie. The cookie’s domain and path must match the target, and the site may require additional session state. Never put a real session cookie in source code that will be committed or shared. Consult the addCookie API documentation.
Limits and troubleshooting
The screenshot shows the login page
The form may not have submitted, a selector may not match the site, a redirect may still be pending, or the success condition may be checking the wrong state. Confirm the site-specific fields and submit action, then wait for an authenticated-only URL or element before rendering.
The open callback reports failure
page.open uses success or fail to report page-load status. If it reports fail, do not render the page as if it were ready; check the URL and whether the page could be reached. A success result still requires a separate authentication check.

The capture is cut off or has the wrong dimensions
Adjust viewportSize for the visible browser area or set clipRect for a specific rectangle. Content outside the selected area will not appear in a viewport capture.
The script exits before the capture finishes
PhantomJS work is asynchronous. Place the render and exit after the login and authenticated-state checks complete, rather than exiting immediately after starting them.
MFA, CAPTCHA, or a modern identity provider blocks the flow
PhantomJS uses WebKit and is legacy software. A tutorial published September 29, 2026 reports version 2.1.1 as the latest release, but that version statement is from a secondary source and was not independently verified against an official release record. Modern identity-provider, MFA, and CAPTCHA flows may not work reliably. Do not try to bypass those protections; use an authorized supported integration or a current browser automation stack instead.
