To stream from OBS Studio to YouTube, verify that your channel can livestream, create or select an event in YouTube Studio, add the event’s stream key in OBS, build your scene, check audio and output settings, then test the stream in YouTube’s Live Control Room before going public. OBS and YouTube provide the core tools for free; the settings that work best depend on your computer, scene, and available upload speed.

Before you start: check YouTube Live eligibility

Open YouTube Studio and confirm that live streaming is available for your channel. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; the streamer must also be at least 16. YouTube may change its requirements, so check its current live-streaming eligibility guidance if access is unavailable.

You also need OBS Studio installed, a stable internet connection, and the video and audio sources you plan to use. You do not need to buy a camera or microphone to begin; YouTube says existing equipment can be enough.

Connect OBS Studio to a YouTube live event

  1. Create or select an event. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or select an encoder stream in Live Control Room. The exact interface can change; use YouTube’s encoder stream setup instructions for the current flow.
  2. Copy the stream key. Live Control Room provides the stream key and stream URL for the encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not share it or show it in screenshots. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS with the replacement.
  3. Enter it in OBS. Open OBS and go to Settings → Stream. Choose YouTube in the service list and enter the stream key. Follow the current YouTube and OBS instructions if the service interface offers a sign-in or connection flow instead. OBS documents the service-and-key setup in its overview.

Build the scene viewers will see

A scene is the arrangement of visual sources sent to viewers. Start with one scene and add only what the broadcast needs: for example, a display or window capture for a presentation, Game Capture where supported, a webcam or capture card, and optional images or text.

  1. In the Scenes panel, create or select a scene.
  2. In Sources, select + and add the source type you need. OBS’s Quick Start Guide covers the initial setup. For a webcam, add a Video Capture Source, select the correct device, and position and resize it in the preview. OBS describes this in its FAQ.
  3. Check each source’s visibility and order. Sources higher in the list can cover sources beneath them; drag or resize sources in the preview to compose the scene.
  4. Switch among scenes and sources as needed, then check the preview for an unintended black area, hidden webcam, or overlay covering important content.

Choose video, audio, and streaming settings

Start with the Auto-Configuration Wizard

On first launch, OBS may offer the Auto-Configuration Wizard. If not, open Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard. Use its recommendations as a starting point, not a guarantee: performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, and computer. OBS recommends testing before a real broadcast.

Set resolution and frame rate for your setup

In Settings → Video, Base (Canvas) Resolution describes the scene layout; Output (Scaled) Resolution is the encoded stream size. Choose an output resolution and frame rate your computer and connection can sustain. A higher resolution can show more detail, while higher frame rates make motion smoother but require more processing and bandwidth. OBS notes that 60 fps can be more demanding than 30 fps. Do not assume that every computer or internet connection can sustain 1080p60.

Set encoder and bitrate using YouTube’s guidance

In Settings → Output, choose streaming output settings that fit your hardware and upload capacity. YouTube’s current general guidance for RTMP/RTMPS streaming recommends H.264 with CBR, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe frequency (no more than four seconds). Its H.264 bitrate ranges are recommendations for ingestion, not a universal OBS preset:

Output YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate range
720p30 3–8 Mbps
720p60 3–8 Mbps
1080p30 5–14 Mbps
1080p60 6–17 Mbps

These figures are from YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance. Check that page before a broadcast because recommended settings and codec support can change. Choose a bitrate within the relevant range that your measured upload connection and computer can sustain. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.

Check audio and upload capacity

Speak into the microphone and play any desktop audio you intend to include. Watch the Audio Mixer meters in OBS. If a meter does not move, open Settings → Audio and select the intended device; also check that the source is not muted.

Run a speed test on the connection the streaming computer will actually use. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom beyond the stream’s total bitrate. Account for other people and devices using the connection, as well as any additional stream, when deciding what bitrate is safe. If the available upload speed is marginal, lower the stream bitrate, output resolution, or frame rate.

Test the stream before going live

  1. In YouTube Studio, use a test stream or an unlisted or private event where appropriate.
  2. In OBS, start streaming and include representative movement and audio—not just a static screen.
  3. Check OBS’s preview and audio meters, then inspect YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and stream health messages.
  4. Fix problems before inviting viewers or beginning the event. OBS strongly encourages a short test rather than jumping straight into a first broadcast.

For a two-way conversation, latency affects how quickly viewers’ messages and your responses meet. Lower latency can make interaction feel more immediate, while YouTube notes that lower-latency settings can increase playback buffering risk. Choose the latency setting for the event’s needs and test it with the actual connection.

Go live and end the broadcast

Once the test looks and sounds right, start the intended event in OBS and confirm that YouTube Live Control Room is receiving it. Use YouTube’s event controls to start the public broadcast when ready. At the end, stop the broadcast through the event controls and stop streaming in OBS; check that YouTube has ended the event before closing OBS.

Common OBS-to-YouTube problems and fixes

  • YouTube does not receive the stream: Confirm live eligibility and that the selected event is active. In OBS, verify the YouTube service and stream key. If the key was exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and enter the new one.
  • The webcam is missing: Confirm that a Video Capture Source is enabled, uses the right device, and is visible above sources that could cover it. Reposition or resize it in the preview.
  • There is no audio: Watch the Audio Mixer while speaking or playing desktop audio. Select the correct devices in Settings → Audio and ensure the intended source is not muted.
  • Frames drop or the stream is unstable: Compare the selected bitrate with actual upload capacity and retain YouTube’s recommended headroom. Reduce bitrate, output resolution, or frame rate if the network cannot sustain the settings.
  • CPU or GPU load is high: Reduce output resolution or frame rate, or simplify the scene. Hardware encoding can shift work away from the CPU, but performance and quality depend on the specific hardware and drivers; do not switch encoders blindly.

Copyright and YouTube Live rules to check

Only broadcast material you have the rights to use, including music, video clips, and images. A live stream can be interrupted or restricted if it violates YouTube’s rules or copyright requirements. Check YouTube’s current copyright guidance and live-streaming eligibility requirements before an event, especially if you plan to use third-party material.
