OBS scene collections can keep each YouTube channel’s scenes and sources separate, but they do not create separate streams or save each channel’s output settings. For each channel, pair the right scene collection with the right OBS profile, then verify its YouTube stream destination and key before going live. Collections organize what appears in OBS; profiles hold stream, video, and output settings.
What scene collections do—and what they do not
OBS Project’s Scene Collections guide says a collection saves the scenes and sources added to it. That makes collections useful for keeping channel layouts distinct—for example, one channel’s starting screen, program layout, break screen, and end screen. Collections also include Global Audio Sources configured in Settings → Audio, so a shared microphone, desktop-audio device, or other global source can still affect more than one layout.
A scene collection does not save the YouTube destination or encoding configuration. OBS profiles save stream settings, video settings, and output settings; profiles do not store scenes. As the OBS Project explains, a profile saves settings primarily related to outputs. Collection and profile are separate controls and can be mixed and matched.
Do OBS scene collections save my YouTube stream settings? No. Use a profile for stream and output settings. Switching collections alone does not change the YouTube channel or stream key.

Set up a collection and profile for each channel
- Create a scene collection. In OBS, open the Scene Collection menu and choose New. Give it an unmistakable channel-specific name, such as Channel A — scenes. Build or add that channel’s scenes and sources. OBS documents the menu options New, Duplicate, Rename, Remove, Import, and Export.
- Review global audio. Open Settings → Audio and confirm the global audio devices and sources are appropriate for that channel. Do not assume that a different collection isolates global audio.
- Create or select the corresponding profile. Open the Profile menu and create a clearly named profile for the channel’s output configuration, such as Channel A — YouTube output. Configure that profile’s stream, video, and output settings for the intended feed. Create distinct profiles when channels need different destinations or output configurations.
- Repeat for every channel. Keep collection and profile names visibly paired, for example, Channel B — scenes and Channel B — YouTube output. This naming is a practical safeguard: the OBS documentation keeps the two sets of settings separate, so operators need to check both.
- Back up before major edits or migration. Use the Scene Collection menu’s Export option to save a collection; use Import to bring one into OBS. The guide documents importing OBS Studio collections and collections from OBS Classic, XSplit Broadcaster, or Streamlabs Desktop. Treat the export as a collection backup, not as a profile backup.
Connect the active profile to the intended YouTube channel
YouTube’s encoder setup flow is to create or select a stream in YouTube Studio, then enter that stream’s server URL and key in the encoder. In OBS, do this with the profile intended for that channel, and check YouTube Studio’s selected channel and stream before copying credentials.
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream for the channel you intend to broadcast.
- Copy that stream’s YouTube Live server URL and stream key.
- In OBS, activate the matching profile and open Settings → Stream. Select the YouTube service or enter the provided server details as appropriate, then enter the correct stream key and apply the settings.
- Before going live, verify the active scene collection, active profile, YouTube channel, server URL, and stream key as a single checklist. A correct visual collection paired with the wrong profile can still send video to the wrong destination.
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep each key private. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a key; reset it if it is exposed or compromised. YouTube also says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available, so do not leave eligibility setup until just before the planned start.

Test the feed and plan for 24/7 continuity
Before relying on any unattended setup, test the full sequence: the correct collection and profile, the correct YouTube destination, audio and video quality, and the stream’s behavior after a stop and restart. OBS recommends testing settings, smoothness, and scenes before a first live stream. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends previewing the feed, checking access through channel and watch pages, and monitoring audio and video while live. These checks help catch configuration problems; they are not a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
Budget upload bandwidth for all active feeds
YouTube says total outbound stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. For multiple simultaneous feeds, add their outbound bitrates together and plan for that combined total plus the recommended headroom. This combined-feed calculation follows YouTube’s total-bitrate guidance; YouTube does not state it as a separate multi-channel threshold. Network disruption can break a stream, so test the actual connection and monitor it during operation.

Understand the archive limit
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that one continuous 24-hour stream will produce a complete 24-hour archive. If a complete archive matters, confirm YouTube’s current behavior for your setup and consider whether separate sessions or a local recording are needed.
Limits of what scene collections can solve
Collections and profiles make it easier to organize channel layouts and output configurations, but the OBS and YouTube guidance described here does not prescribe how to run multiple independent, simultaneous YouTube feeds from one OBS process, nor how to guarantee recovery after a computer or network failure. A collection is not an additional output. Before choosing a simultaneous-stream architecture, establish the OBS version, operating system, number of feeds, resource and upload capacity, and recovery requirements; verify that the chosen method supports them.

Troubleshooting common setup problems
- The right scenes appear, but the stream goes to the wrong channel: The collection does not determine the destination. Stop and check the active profile, YouTube channel selection, server URL, and key.
- A channel uses unexpected audio: Review the collection’s sources and OBS Settings → Audio. Global Audio Sources are included with collections and may be shared across setups.
- YouTube does not accept the key: Confirm that the key belongs to the selected channel and stream, and that it was copied accurately. If the key may have been exposed, have a channel owner or manager reset it and update the matching OBS profile.
- The feed drops or becomes unstable: Check the available upload capacity against the total outbound bitrate of every active feed, leaving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Check for network disruption and monitor the preview and live feed.
- Live streaming is unavailable: Check channel verification and whether a live-streaming restriction occurred in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- A continuous stream lacks a full-day archive: YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours; the cited guidance does not promise a complete archive for a continuous 24-hour feed.
