To loop one video in OBS, add it as a Media Source and enable Loop. To repeat a playlist, use VLC Video and enable Loop Playlist; VLC must be installed, and its architecture should match OBS. OBS Replay Buffer does something different: it saves recent output when you trigger its assigned hotkey. It does not loop media or, by itself, keep a stream running unattended.
For a long broadcast, configure OBS as a YouTube encoder, test the actual picture and sound in Live Control Room, monitor stream health, and keep a local recording if you need an archive. YouTube says streams over 12 hours may not be captured as archives. If you want uploaded videos to loop from the cloud instead of leaving OBS and a computer running, StreamNeo is another option.
Choose the OBS feature that matches your goal
| Goal | OBS feature | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Repeat a single video file | Media Source with Loop enabled | Restarts playback after the file ends. |
| Play several videos in sequence or shuffle them | VLC Video with a playlist | Plays a VLC playlist; its Loop Playlist setting repeats the playlist. |
| Save a recent segment of the running output | Replay Buffer | Keeps recent output available to save when you press its assigned hotkey. It does not make a source loop. |
OBS scenes combine sources into the output sent to YouTube. A looping source controls playback; Replay Buffer is for capturing recent output. Neither one is, on its own, an unattended recovery system for a crash, power loss, operating-system restart, or network interruption.
Loop one video file in OBS
- Add the source: In the OBS scene, use the Sources panel’s add button and choose Media Source. Create or select a source, then browse to the local video file.
- Enable looping: Open the source properties and check Loop. Playback should restart when the file reaches its end.
- Check the scene: Confirm the source is visible, correctly ordered relative to overlays and backgrounds, and framed as intended. Check that the intended audio is audible in the OBS mixer.
- Test the transition: Let the file reach its end before going live. Verify that it restarts cleanly and that neither picture nor sound disappears or glitches at the loop point.
OBS lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM among supported video formats, and MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV among supported audio formats. A file’s presence in a supported format list does not guarantee that every codec or file will behave identically on every system; test the actual file in your scene.

Loop a playlist with VLC Video
- Install VLC: The VLC-backed OBS source requires the VLC application. Install the 64-bit VLC version if you use 64-bit OBS.
- Add the source: In the Sources panel, add VLC Video and create or select the source.
- Build the playlist: Add the media files in the intended order. Use the source’s shuffle option if you want playback order randomized.
- Repeat playback: Check Loop Playlist in the source properties. OBS documents this option as enabled by default, but verify the setting rather than relying on the default.
- Test the full sequence: Confirm each file plays with the expected sound and layout, then let the final item finish and verify that the playlist starts again.
Choose Media Source when you need one file to repeat and want to avoid the VLC dependency. Choose VLC Video when the broadcast needs multiple files in a playlist or shuffled playback.
Configure OBS to send the scene to YouTube
- Create or select the live event: Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or choose the event you intend to use. Copy its stream URL and stream key.
- Enter the encoder details in OBS: Open Settings > Stream, select the applicable YouTube service option, and enter or connect the stream URL and key as prompted by the current OBS interface. UI labels and connection flows may vary as software changes.
- Protect the key: Treat the stream key like a password. YouTube describes it as the credential/address that allows an encoder to send an accepted feed. Do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to that event.
- Set encoding deliberately: Choose a resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate your upload connection and computer can sustain. YouTube’s current recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; use its official bitrate table rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.
- Start with a preview: Start the encoder output and check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room before making the event public or relying on it for a long run.
Keyframes and bitrate
YouTube’s guidance accessed in 2026 recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For H.264, its current table lists recommended bitrates of 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, and 34 Mbps for 1440p at 60 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular upload connection or computer can sustain those settings. Check the current official table for the codec and exact resolution/frame-rate combination you plan to use.

OBS notes that system requirements depend on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. A setup that handles a simple scene at one setting may struggle with a more demanding scene or higher output settings.
Use Replay Buffer to save recent output
Replay Buffer is useful when you want to preserve a recent segment of the output—for example, to save an unexpected moment from a running broadcast. Enable Replay Buffer in OBS’s output settings and assign a hotkey to save the buffer, then test that the hotkey creates a usable file. The saved segment is not the same as a continuously maintained archive, and the feature does not restart a media source or recover a dropped YouTube connection.

OBS documents startup parameters including --startreplaybuffer and --startstreaming. These options establish ways to start those functions; they do not establish complete recovery after a crash, power loss, restart, or connection failure.
Test and protect a long-running broadcast
Before going live
- Test the actual media, scene, encoder settings, and audio—not just a still preview.
- Check the media loop point or the full playlist cycle.
- Watch YouTube Live Control Room for stream health and encoding problems.
- If recording locally, verify that the recording begins and that the file continues to grow as expected.
Plan for the archive limit
YouTube Help, accessed in 2026, says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. If you need a dependable copy, record locally and check the resulting file; do not count on the YouTube archive as the only copy of a continuous broadcast.

Storage needs depend on recording bitrate and duration, so estimate them from your actual settings and run time rather than choosing a drive capacity by guesswork. An external drive can serve as optional local archive storage.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The single video stops at the end | Loop is not enabled on the Media Source. | Open that source’s properties, enable Loop, and test through the end of the file. |
| The playlist will not load or play | VLC is missing, or its architecture does not match the OBS installation. | Install VLC; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC. Reopen the source and test the playlist. |
| The playlist ends and stays stopped | Loop Playlist is off or the playlist source is not configured as expected. | Check the VLC Video source properties and test the complete playlist cycle. |
| OBS shows the scene, but YouTube does not receive it | The event selection, stream URL, key, or connection may be wrong. | Confirm the selected Live Control Room event and encoder credentials. Keep the key private, and check the YouTube preview and stream-health indicators. |
| Video or audio stutters during a long stream | The upload may not sustain the chosen bitrate, or the encoder/system may be overloaded by the settings or scene. | Check stream health, compare settings with YouTube’s recommendations for the chosen codec and frame rate, and reduce output demands if the system or connection cannot sustain them. |
| No YouTube archive appears after a very long event | The broadcast exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour threshold for automatic archive capture. | Use a local recording as your archive backup and verify the file after the stream. |
| Replay Buffer does not create a looping source | Replay Buffer captures recent output; it does not control media playback. | Enable Loop on a Media Source or Loop Playlist on a VLC Video source, depending on what you need. |
