You can loop a video file into a YouTube Live broadcast from a VPS with FFmpeg and NVIDIA NVENC—but only if the VPS actually exposes a supported NVIDIA GPU, driver, and FFmpeg build. First verify NVENC on the instance, then configure YouTube’s ingest details and run a tested FFmpeg command under a process supervisor. A loop alone does not guarantee an uninterrupted stream.

What you need before you start

  • A VPS or container that exposes a compatible NVIDIA GPU to the environment running FFmpeg. A provider’s plan name or an installed FFmpeg binary does not prove that NVENC is available.
  • An NVIDIA driver working inside that environment and an FFmpeg build that exposes the NVENC encoder. NVIDIA’s guide lists h264_nvenc, hevc_nvenc, and av1_nvenc; the GPU, driver, and FFmpeg build determine what works. See NVIDIA’s FFmpeg guide and FFmpeg documentation.
  • A video file with a usable video stream and, if needed, audio stream, plus enough sustained VPS upload capacity for the selected output.
  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, a stream destination, and its stream key. YouTube describes the key as the encoder’s password; keep it secret.

A CPU-only VPS can still use software encoding, but that is not an NVENC setup. Do not assume performance or compatibility without testing the actual host.

Confirm NVENC works on the VPS

  1. List NVIDIA GPUs visible to the instance:

    nvidia-smi -L

If no device appears, check whether the selected VPS exposes a GPU and whether the container or VM has permission to access it.

  2. Check whether FFmpeg lists the NVIDIA encoder:

    ffmpeg -hide_banner -encoders

Look for h264_nvenc. Its presence in the list is not enough by itself; a real encode test on this instance is the practical check.

Create a YouTube Live destination and protect its key

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and obtain the ingest URL and stream key from the Live Control Room.
  2. Use the RTMPS destination YouTube provides for that stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS; its encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265, and AV1 codecs. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and YouTube’s stream key guidance.
  3. Supply the key through a protected configuration or environment mechanism rather than embedding it in a public script or repository. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder configuration.

Choose a YouTube-compatible output profile

For a straightforward SDR starting point, use H.264 at 30 fps, a two-second keyframe interval, and a bitrate suitable for both YouTube’s current recommendations and the VPS’s sustained upload. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and sets a four-second maximum. Its current H.264 figures include:

Output profile YouTube minimum bitrate YouTube recommended bitrate
720p30 H.264 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 H.264 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 H.264 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These are figures from YouTube’s current live encoder settings page, accessed in 2026; consult that page for other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs. YouTube advises choosing a quality the internet connection can sustain and testing before going live. Leave network headroom above the configured stream bitrate. Lower latency may increase playback buffering, so choose a latency setting based on whether real-time interaction matters. See YouTube’s encoder settings and YouTube’s latency settings.

Loop a file with FFmpeg and NVENC

This example assumes /srv/media/loop.mp4 contains video and audio and that AAC audio output is suitable. Replace the generic RTMPS destination with the URL and protected key supplied for your YouTube stream.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/media/loop.mp4
  -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?
  -c:v h264_nvenc -preset p4 -tune hq
  -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -b:v 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M
  -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv 'rtmps://YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'
  • -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely. It must appear before the relevant -i because FFmpeg input options apply to the next input.
  • -re reads the file at its native rate for a live-source workflow.
  • -map 0:v:0 selects the first video stream. -map 0:a:0? selects the first audio stream if present; the question mark makes that mapping optional.
  • -c:v h264_nvenc selects NVIDIA’s H.264 encoder. The example’s -preset p4 and -tune hq are not universal: verify they are accepted by the installed build using its encoder help.
  • -r 30 sets 30 fps. A GOP size of 60 frames with a 30 fps output targets a two-second keyframe interval.
  • -b:v, -maxrate, and -bufsize set a 14 Mbps target/maxrate and a 28 Mbps buffer in this example. Do not assume these flags alone guarantee a specific CBR mode: check the installed encoder’s supported rate-control options and confirm the outgoing behavior.
  • -c:a aac encodes audio as AAC rather than copying an unknown input audio codec. Adjust mapping or audio handling if the file has no audio or has multiple tracks.

The command is an illustrative starting point, not a tested configuration. Check the source streams, output resolution, frame rate, audio, and accepted NVENC options on the VPS. YouTube’s guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Start with a private or unlisted stream, use representative motion and audio, and monitor stream-health messages in Live Control Room before switching to the intended audience.

Keep the stream operating continuously

-stream_loop -1 repeats media; it does not restart FFmpeg after a process failure, network interruption, or VPS reboot. Run FFmpeg under an operating-system service manager or other process supervisor, configure restart-on-failure, retain logs, and arrange alerts for missed restarts or degraded stream health. The exact configuration depends on your Linux distribution and supervisor, so test restart and reconnect behavior on the actual host rather than assuming a loop is a complete 24/7 reliability system.

Also consider the operational choices that affect whether this setup is sustainable:

Troubleshoot common failures

  • No GPU appears in nvidia-smi -L: the selected instance may not expose an NVIDIA GPU, or the runtime may lack device access. Check the VPS configuration, driver, and container permissions.
  • h264_nvenc is missing or reports unavailable hardware: confirm the FFmpeg build includes NVENC, the driver is suitable, and the process can access the GPU. FFmpeg’s runtime hardware acceleration depends on supported hardware and a suitable driver.
  • FFmpeg rejects a preset or option: inspect ffmpeg -h encoder=h264_nvenc on the installed build and choose from the options it reports.
  • Audio is silent or the command fails on audio mapping: inspect the input streams, confirm whether audio exists, and adjust mapping and encoding accordingly.
  • YouTube reports ingest or stream-health problems: verify the destination and key, outgoing resolution/frame rate/bitrate, keyframe interval, and sustained network capacity. Use Live Control Room messages and test with representative content.
  • The stream stops after a process or host failure: check supervisor restart policy and retained logs, then test recovery and alerting. The loop option alone does not recover a stopped process.
  • The stream key may have leaked: reset it in Live Control Room and replace the key in the protected encoder configuration.
