Yes—Apple devices can pair with Nintendo Switch Online N64 controllers, and Apple platforms support many Bluetooth and USB game controllers. Which Nintendo controllers work with Apple devices?
Apple expanded controller support at the platform level: its iOS 16 release notes say that “Many additional Bluetooth and USB game controllers are supported by the Game Controller framework on macOS 13, iOS 16, and tvOS 16 and later.” The framework supports MFi, console, and platform-specific controllers, with Bluetooth or USB connection depending on the device and controller, according to Apple’s Game Controller documentation.
For Nintendo’s Switch N64 controller specifically, compatibility guidance reported support starting with iOS 17.1, iPadOS 17.1, macOS Sonoma 14.1, and tvOS 17.1. Apple’s current controller guidance also covers iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro, but app-level support still determines how well a particular game works.

Apple’s customization guidance lists iOS 16 or later, iPadOS 16 or later, tvOS 16 or later, and macOS Ventura 13 or later for controller customization. That general requirement does not replace the newer N64 pairing version guidance.

Pair the N64 controller with an Apple device
- Update the device. For the N64 controller, use iOS 17.1 or later on iPhone, iPadOS 17.1 or later on iPad, macOS Sonoma 14.1 or later on Mac, or tvOS 17.1 or later on Apple TV.
- Open Bluetooth settings. On iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Bluetooth. On Mac, open System Settings and select Bluetooth. On Apple TV, open Settings and select Remotes and Devices, then Bluetooth.
- Put the controller in pairing mode. Hold its SYNC button for at least one second, as described in the reported N64 pairing guidance.
- Select the controller. When it appears under Other Devices, select it to pair. Apple’s controller connection guidance also notes that some controllers can connect automatically through a USB cable that supports both data and charging.
- Test it in the app. Open the intended game or emulator and check each control. If the app offers controller settings, adjust the mapping there.
If pairing or button mapping fails
- The controller does not appear: Confirm Bluetooth is on, put the controller back into pairing mode, and try again. If it was previously paired, forget or remove it from the device’s Bluetooth list before retrying.
- Pairing keeps failing: Reduce nearby Bluetooth interference and repeat the pairing steps. Apple’s controller troubleshooting guidance provides additional connection steps.
- Some buttons do not work as expected: A successful Bluetooth connection establishes that the device can connect to the controller; it does not ensure that every game or emulator supports the controller’s full layout. Check the app’s controller settings or its own compatibility information.
What if the official Nintendo pad is unavailable?
Apple’s framework supports many Bluetooth and USB controllers, so a compatible third-party retro-style pad may be an alternative. Check the controller maker’s compatibility information and confirm that the specific Apple game or emulator supports its controls before buying or relying on it.
