You cannot install the Microsoft Project desktop app directly on macOS: the cited Project desktop requirements are for Windows. On a Mac, use Microsoft’s browser-based project tools if your account includes them, or run Windows in a virtual machine and install a Windows edition of Project there. The virtual-machine route is a community-described workaround, not a Microsoft compatibility guarantee.
Can you download Microsoft Project for Mac?
The available evidence does not establish a native macOS edition of Microsoft Project desktop. Microsoft’s listing for Project Standard 2024 specifies Windows 11, Windows 10, or Windows Server 2019. A Microsoft Community Moderator also describes the desktop client as Windows-only; that community answer is guidance, while the product listing provides the edition’s stated operating-system requirements.
Microsoft’s general guide to downloading Office apps on a Mac does not establish that Project desktop has a Mac version. For Project, use the Project-specific requirements rather than assuming that general Office installation steps apply.
Choose a route that works on your Mac

Use Microsoft’s browser-based project tools
Microsoft describes Project for the web as transitioning to Microsoft Planner, with most of its capabilities continuing under the new name as rollout reaches each organization. The name and experience you see can therefore depend on rollout. Sign in with your work or school account and check which project tools and features your organization has enabled; do not assume every plan includes the same access.

The browser option is not feature-identical to Project desktop. Microsoft’s comparison distinguishes web capabilities from advanced desktop/Project Online features, including baselines, critical path, resource and financial management, and program and portfolio management. Check the current Microsoft project-management feature comparison against the work you need to do before choosing the browser route.
Run Windows Project in a virtual machine
A Microsoft Community Moderator suggested running Windows in a virtual machine on a Mac for users who need Project desktop, naming Parallels and VMware as examples. This is a possible workaround, not an official Microsoft guarantee that a particular Mac, virtualization product, Windows version, and Project edition will work together.

- Check that the virtualization software supports your Mac processor and macOS version.
- Check that the Windows version you plan to install is supported in that specific virtual-machine configuration.
- Confirm the Project edition’s Windows requirements. Project Standard 2024’s Microsoft listing specifies Windows 11, Windows 10, or Windows Server 2019; the listing does not validate any virtual-machine setup.
- Make sure you have a valid Project license for the edition you intend to install.
Install Project inside Windows
These are Windows installation steps, not a way to install Project natively on macOS. If you have a compatible Windows PC or have set up Windows in a virtual machine, follow Microsoft’s current Project installation instructions in that Windows environment.

For an eligible perpetual license, sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the purchase. If it is your first use of a product key, redeem it as instructed so it is linked to that account. For Project Online Professional or Premium subscriptions, the required license must be assigned to your account.
- Open your Microsoft account’s Apps & devices area. Select the Project product you own or the installation area offered for your subscription.
- Choose Install and run the downloaded installer. Complete the installation within Windows, then launch Project there.
If Project is missing from Apps & devices, the account may not have an assigned subscription license. Ask your work or school administrator to check the assignment, or verify that you signed in with the account tied to your perpetual purchase.

Why Project Online is not a current alternative
Microsoft Learn states that Project Online was to be retired on September 30, 2026. As of October 7, 2026, that stated retirement date has passed. The notice concerns Project Online; it does not say that the standalone Project desktop application has been retired.
