Halide 3.2 adds adjustable-aperture support for iPhone 18 Pro. Choose Aperture Priority to set the f-stop while Halide manages shutter speed and ISO, or use Manual to control all three exposure settings yourself. The physical aperture feature is specific to the iPhone 18 Pro; an app cannot add a mechanical iris to iPhones with fixed-aperture cameras.

Which iPhone supports aperture control in Halide 3.2?

Halide’s App Store release note for version 3.2 says it adds support for the adjustable aperture on iPhone 18 Pro. That means the control depends on the phone’s camera hardware as well as the app: other iPhone models with fixed-aperture cameras do not gain a physical adjustable aperture from Halide. The 2023 Halide support article’s general statement that iPhones have fixed apertures predates this hardware and app release, so it should not be applied to iPhone 18 Pro.

Halide’s release note is the primary confirmation of support: Halide Mark II on the App Store. For an explanation of the new modes and compatible phone, see MacRumors’ October 1, 2026 coverage.

How do Aperture Priority and Manual differ?

Mode Aperture Shutter speed ISO Best when
Aperture Priority You choose it Halide handles it Halide handles it Depth of field is the main decision and you want the app to balance exposure.
Manual You choose it You choose it You choose it You need deliberate control over motion rendering and sensitivity as well as depth of field.

In both modes, changing aperture affects how much light enters and the depth of field—the range that appears acceptably sharp. Shutter speed controls how long the camera records light and motion: a faster shutter can reduce motion blur, while a slower one can show more movement. ISO affects the camera’s sensitivity; raising it can help in low light but generally brings more grain or noise and can reduce color accuracy.

How do I change aperture in Halide?

Choose Aperture Priority if you want to set the f-stop and leave shutter speed and ISO to Halide. Choose Manual if you want to set aperture, shutter speed, and ISO together. Halide’s 3.2 release note confirms the new Aperture Priority option, but the available sources do not document a verified, step-by-step gesture for opening or adjusting the new aperture control. Use the current in-app controls and labels rather than relying on older instructions for a different version.

In particular, Halide’s 2023 help page describes tapping a triangle in the upper-right to open manual exposure controls. That is an older instruction, not a confirmed 3.2 aperture-control procedure. The help page remains useful for general exposure concepts: Halide: How do I change shutter speed, ISO, or aperture?

Which exposure settings should you choose?

Choose aperture for depth of field

Start with the aperture that suits how much of the scene you want to appear in focus, then consider how its light intake affects the exposure. Aperture Priority is useful when this is the choice you care about most. Switch to Manual when you also need to keep shutter speed or ISO at a deliberate value.

Choose shutter speed for motion and stability

Halide Support’s 2026 manual-exposure lesson uses 1/1000 second or faster as an example of a shutter speed that freezes motion, and 1/30 second or slower as an example that allows motion blur. It also cautions that handholding below about 1/60 second may reveal camera shake. These are tutorial examples, not guarantees: the right speed depends on the subject, movement, and how steadily you hold the phone.

Choose ISO with noise in mind

Halide Support’s 2026 lesson describes ISO 100–400 as a clean, minimal-grain example range and ISO 1600 or above as a low-light option that introduces more grain and reduces color accuracy. Treat those as guidance, not fixed limits. In Manual mode, raising ISO may let you use a faster shutter in dim conditions, but it comes with the image-quality trade-off described above.

How should you check the result?

Do not judge exposure only by how bright the viewfinder looks. Halide notes that the preview may not match the final processed photo and describes an exposure meter in the upper-left when using manual exposure. Check the meter while composing, take a test image, and review the processed result; adjust the chosen settings if the image’s brightness, blur, or depth of field is not what you intended. Halide explains the preview limitation in its manual controls help article.
