Mac Magnifier is a dedicated accessibility app introduced with macOS Tahoe 26. It enlarges nearby subjects using an iPhone connected through Continuity Camera or an attached USB camera, helping users inspect documents, screens, whiteboards, books, and presentations.
What Mac Magnifier does
Magnifier turns a camera connected to your Mac into a live view of nearby surroundings that you can enlarge. Apple describes it as a tool for people with low vision to zoom in on real-world material, including text on a screen or whiteboard. You can also apply image filters to make items easier to see or read, and adjust the perspective when viewing a book or presentation from an angle.
Apple also integrates Accessibility Reader into Magnifier on Mac, iPhone, and iPad. Accessibility Reader can be launched from apps and is intended to help people interact with real-world text, such as a book or dining menu. Apple announced this integration on May 13, 2025.
What you need to use it
You need a Mac running macOS Tahoe 26 and a supported camera source: an iPhone using Continuity Camera or an attached USB camera. Apple’s accessibility feature overview confirms both camera options. Apple Support’s Mac Magnifier instructions specify connecting a USB camera or an iPhone to the Mac with a wired connection.

Choose a camera source

Set up and use Magnifier
- Connect an iPhone to the Mac with a cable, or attach a USB camera. Apple’s Support instructions describe these wired connections.
- Open the Magnifier app on your Mac and select the camera view you want to use.
- Position the camera toward the material you need to inspect, such as a document, whiteboard, screen, book, or presentation.
- Adjust the view and apply image filters if they make the subject easier to see. When viewing a book or presentation from an angle, use perspective adjustment to improve how it appears.
- To keep a captured image available, use the capture control; Apple Support says captured images can be accessed from the sidebar.
When Magnifier is useful—and how it differs from Zoom
Use Mac Magnifier when the material is in your surroundings and you need a camera view enlarged on your Mac: for example, to read a printed page, inspect writing on a whiteboard, or see a presentation from your seat. It is not the same as the Mac’s Zoom screen-magnification feature. Zoom enlarges content already displayed by the Mac; Magnifier uses an external camera to show and enlarge physical subjects.
When Apple added Magnifier to Mac
Apple announced Magnifier for Mac on May 13, 2025, previewed it as part of macOS Tahoe in June 2025, and included it in the macOS release announcement on September 15, 2025. It is a macOS Tahoe 26 feature, not an older built-in Mac app. Apple’s macOS Tahoe announcement and release announcement describe its introduction.
