To capture a website automatically, create a Zap with a schedule or app event as its trigger, then add HTML/CSS to Image’s Create Image From a URL action. Connect your account, map a fully qualified public-page URL, test the screenshot, and turn on the Zap. The action returns an image URL you can send to a later step to store, share, or attach to a record.
Zapier handles when the capture runs; HTML/CSS to Image renders the page. See the Zapier app listing and the service’s Zapier integration guide for the integration details.
What you need before building the Zap
- A Zapier account and a trigger app, such as a schedule, form, spreadsheet, or database.
- An HTML/CSS to Image account with its connection credentials available through the service dashboard.
- A fully qualified URL to a publicly accessible webpage. A URL screenshot is not the same as supplying HTML/CSS to generate an image.
The trigger can provide a different URL on each run, or you can enter one fixed page URL in the action. If the URL comes from an earlier Zap step, make sure the trigger’s test data contains the exact URL you intend to capture.
Build and publish the screenshot Zap
- Create the trigger. In Zapier, create a Zap, choose the app and event that should initiate a screenshot, connect that account, and test the trigger. A schedule is suitable for recurring captures; an event trigger is better when a particular form submission or record should cause a capture.
- Add the screenshot action. Add HTML/CSS to Image as the action app and select its URL capture action, currently labeled Create Image From a URL in the Zapier listing.
- Connect HTML/CSS to Image. Use the integration’s connected-account flow and the service credentials requested there. The service’s tutorial describes connecting with an API key; keep the key private and do not place it in webpage code or screenshot content.
- Set the page URL. Enter a fixed public URL or map the URL field from the trigger or another earlier step. Use a complete URL, including its scheme, such as
https://example.com/pricing. - Set only the capture options you need. Configure dimensions, delay, device scale, selector, or full-screen capture when they solve a specific layout or loading requirement. The action’s exposed fields may not include every parameter supported by the API.
- Test and inspect the result. Run the action test and inspect both the image and returned image URL. Confirm the intended page loaded, the crop and dimensions are right, and dynamic content has appeared before proceeding.
- Use the result and turn on the Zap. Map the returned image URL into a later storage, messaging, or record-update step if desired, then publish the Zap. Check the first live runs for correct URLs and captures.
The service’s daily screenshot walkthrough follows the same broad flow: choose and test a trigger, add the capture action, connect the account, pass the URL and options, test, and publish.

Choose viewport, delay, scale, and crop settings
Zapier’s current action listing shows the URL as required and offers optional device scale, CSS, viewport width and height, millisecond delay, selector, and full-screen capture. Check the fields visible in your own Zap before relying on an option: the Zapier form and the underlying API do not necessarily expose the same controls.
Viewport width and height
Set width and height together when you need a known browser viewport, for example to make captures consistent across runs. The API documentation says explicitly setting viewport dimensions disables automatic cropping, so use these values deliberately rather than assuming the service will also size the capture automatically.

Delay and dynamic content
A page that fills in after JavaScript runs may be captured before its content appears. The integration documentation recommends starting with a 500 ms delay for pages that need extra loading time. Treat that as a starting point, not a guarantee: test the target page and adjust the millisecond delay to its behavior. A longer wait can increase the Zap’s total run time.
The API also documents a render_when_ready option, but its availability in the Zapier action is not confirmed by the integration materials cited here. Do not assume you can set it in Zapier.

Selector and full-screen capture
Use a CSS selector when the goal is to capture one specific element rather than the whole page. Check that the selector matches an element on the tested page. For a long page, check whether the full-screen option is available in your action and test the resulting image dimensions before publishing.
CSS and other API options
The Zapier listing includes a CSS field, while the API documents additional options such as block_consent_banners for hiding cookie-consent overlays and output formats PNG, JPG, WebP, and PDF. Do not assume every API option is selectable in the Zapier action; use only fields actually exposed in your connected Zap. The API accepts either url or html, not both, and returns JSON containing a generated image url and id.
Pass the screenshot into the next Zap step
The screenshot action’s generated image URL is the handoff value for downstream automation. Map that output—not the original webpage URL—into a storage, notification, or record-attachment field that accepts an image URL. Test the downstream step as well: an image URL being present in Zapier’s data does not by itself confirm that the receiving app saved or displayed the image as intended.

The API documentation says generated image URLs remain available while the account is active. Do not treat them as permanent public archives independent of account status; if long-term retention matters, use a downstream step to save the image to storage you control.

Security, reliability, and credit planning
Protect the account credential
The official API uses HTTP Basic authentication, with the API ID as the username and API Key as the password. Its documentation says to treat the API key like a password and scope it to the operations the application needs. Use Zapier’s connected-account mechanism rather than embedding a key in public HTML, a shared screenshot, or a page visitors can inspect.

Plan for runs and image credits
Estimate captures per day or event before enabling a high-volume Zap, then check the current image-credit allowance in your HTML/CSS to Image account. The documentation describes an HTTP 429 Plan limit exceeded response when image credits are exhausted. Current plan pricing, Zapier task pricing, and your account’s allowance can vary; check both services’ current account details rather than relying on a generic quota.
Troubleshoot common capture problems
- The action cannot load the page: Confirm the mapped value is a complete public URL and that the trigger’s sample data points to the expected page. A URL screenshot requires a publicly accessible webpage.
- The screenshot is partly blank or missing interactive content: Add a modest delay, test again, and tune it for the target page. JavaScript-heavy pages may need more time; no single delay is guaranteed to fit every site.
- The image shows the wrong area or size: Recheck the URL and the width-and-height values. Use a CSS selector to target a particular element, or test full-screen capture for a long page if that option is exposed.
- A consent overlay covers the page: The API documents
block_consent_banners, but the cited integration materials do not confirm that Zapier exposes it. Check the action’s available fields rather than assuming the setting is selectable. - The API reports “Plan limit exceeded” or HTTP 429: The account has exhausted its image credits. Review the current allowance and capture frequency before resuming the schedule.
- The returned URL is missing from a later action: Retest the screenshot step and map its generated image URL output into the downstream field. Ensure the receiving app accepts a URL in that field.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its one-call endpoint can return a screenshot without building a browser workflow in Zapier.
cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo free.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Zap take a screenshot of a page that requires a login?
The documented URL action is for a public webpage; the cited integration materials do not establish support for authenticated pages.
Can I use HTML/CSS to Image to create an image from markup instead of a website URL?
The API documents HTML input as an alternative to URL input, but the Zapier action described here is the URL screenshot action. Check your Zapier action’s current fields for any HTML-input option.
