Use Storybook as the source of isolated component states, then configure Happo’s Storybook integration to capture those stories and compare them with a baseline. Run the checks in CI so reviewers can inspect visual changes on pull requests. This workflow applies to a Next.js project that has Storybook; Happo’s published material does not establish a current, version-specific Next.js recipe or a tested Next.js–Storybook–Happo version matrix.
How Happo fits into a Next.js and Storybook workflow
Next.js supplies the application and components; Storybook lets you render selected components independently in documented states. Happo captures those stories and compares the resulting images with a baseline. The comparison is useful for appearance changes, while interaction tests are for verifying behavior. Happo describes its Storybook integration and review workflow at Happo’s Storybook page.
This is a Storybook-based visual testing setup, not a separate Next.js plugin or a claim that Happo captures every route of a running Next.js application. Start by making the component states you care about render reliably in Storybook.

Represent important components and states as stories
Use the Storybook already in your Next.js repository, if available. Add stories for the variants users can see: for example, a default button, a disabled button, an error message, or a card with unusually long content. Stories should render independently of unrelated app state wherever practical.

Configure Happo’s Storybook integration
Happo’s integration article names the
happo.ioandhappo-plugin-storybookpackages and describes configuring the plugin for a Storybook setup. The article was published January 24, 2024 and updated September 18, 2025; treat those package names as orientation, not a current version matrix. Follow Happo’s integration guide and its current setup instructions for exact installation commands, versions, configuration syntax, and scripts. Those specifics are not established here, so avoid copying an unverified command into a project. -
Include transient states when they matter
A static story is often enough for a stable visual variant. For a state that must be reached through interaction—such as a menu opened by a click, a hover state, loading, or an error—use Storybook interaction tests to drive the component into that state before Happo captures it. Happo describes this combined approach on its Storybook page. Keep functional assertions in interaction tests; a screenshot shows what was rendered, not whether the interaction logic is correct.

Select browser and viewport coverage deliberately
Happo lists Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, and iOS Safari for its Storybook offering and supports responsive viewport sizes. Pick targets according to your supported users and likely layout risks rather than assuming every repository needs every browser at every width. Include key responsive breakpoints; one viewport cannot establish that a layout behaves well across screen sizes. See Happo’s documented browser and viewport coverage for current product details.

Run checks in CI and review pull-request changes
Integrate the Happo run into the repository’s continuous-integration pipeline so pull requests can receive visual feedback and review links. Happo describes this pull-request workflow in its Storybook documentation and integration article. The exact CI configuration depends on your provider and current Happo instructions. Happo’s September 10, 2026 GitLab announcement called that integration experimental at publication, so check its current status before relying on GitLab-specific support: Happo’s GitLab announcement.

Choose what to capture and how to review it
Build coverage around states, not just components
A story should correspond to a meaningful visual condition. Prioritize variants that are visually distinct or costly to miss: responsive changes, validation errors, loading indicators, empty states, and expanded controls. Interaction-driven stories are useful for temporary states that cannot be represented by props alone. Keep screenshot checks separate from behavior assertions so a visually correct image does not mask a broken interaction.
Compare images with context
Happo offers side-by-side, diff-highlight, and swipe comparisons, and describes color-delta tolerance for ignoring small changes. It also says it silences animations and waits for fonts and asynchronous assets. These controls can reduce noise, but they do not make every detected difference a defect: inspect whether the change is intentional, then update the expected baseline when appropriate. Control external requests when they destabilize captures
Third-party fonts, images, and other remote resources can make a rendered story depend on network conditions outside the snapshot worker’s control. Happo’s September 23, 2026 article documents per-target allowedHostnames for restricting snapshot network requests. At publication, the option was off by default and a future major-version change was planned; check the current behavior before configuring it, and allow any hosts your stories genuinely need. Test font and image rendering after restricting requests. Happo reported one customer’s flaky variants falling from about 2,000 to about 20 after a rollout; that is a customer-specific result, not a general guarantee. See Happo’s network-request guidance.
When to use affected-story runs
Happo’s --only feature can limit a run to story files selected by a team’s dependency analysis. This can reduce snapshot volume, but only if the selection logic correctly identifies what a change can affect. Dynamic loading and implicit dependencies can defeat static analysis.

- Use a full run for global or uncertain changes, including package-level changes and Storybook configuration changes.
- Validate the dependency-selection logic against changes that affect shared components or indirectly loaded stories.
- Keep a full-run fallback when impact is unclear; do not trade away coverage just to shorten CI.
Happo reported that using --only reduced snapshot volume by 40% in its own Storybook build. That is Happo’s internal result, not a promised reduction for other repositories. Its article also gives a specific example of 66 snapshots generated for a full report of 7,315 snapshots; it illustrates that report only. Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
More stories, browser targets, and viewport sizes expand what a run must capture. Keep coverage focused on meaningful risk, and consider affected-story runs only when dependency analysis is trustworthy. Network restrictions and settled fonts or asynchronous assets can help address sources of nondeterminism, while comparison tolerance may help with small rendering variation.
Happo’s May 26, 2026 article describes pricing as per snapshot, with visual and accessibility snapshots combined. It does not establish a plan price or threshold, so consult Happo’s product site for current commercial terms rather than estimating a bill from an unsupported rate.
Troubleshooting common problems
- A story is missing from a run: confirm that it is included in the Storybook setup and in any affected-story selection. For partial runs, verify the dependency map; use a full run when the change’s impact is uncertain.
- A capture shows the wrong state: make sure the story initializes deterministically. For click-, hover-, or other interaction-driven states, configure the interaction test to reach the intended state before capture.
- Diffs vary between runs: inspect animations, font readiness, asynchronous assets, and external requests. Use Happo’s documented settling behavior and comparison controls, and consider restricting network hosts if remote dependencies are the cause.
- Fonts or images disappear after restricting requests: review the configured allowed hosts and include the required asset domains. Confirm the current
allowedHostnamesdefaults and syntax in Happo’s current guidance before changing them. - CI cannot find the expected configuration or package: check the current Happo setup instructions for the installed Storybook and package versions. The older integration article’s package names are not a guarantee of compatibility with a particular current stack.
- GitLab integration does not behave as expected: check the current support status and setup requirements. Happo described the integration as experimental in its September 10, 2026 announcement.
