To use Google Meet, open Google Meet in a supported browser or the Meet or Gmail app, sign in to the account you intend to use, and allow camera and microphone access. Start or schedule a meeting, or open an invitation link to join. The controls you see—such as recording and breakout rooms—depend on your account, Workspace edition, administrator settings, meeting host, and device.

What you need before using Google Meet

Google lists broadband internet, a supported operating system and browser or mobile app, and a built-in or USB camera among Meet’s requirements. A microphone and speakers or headphones are also needed for two-way audio. Google’s stated minimum hardware is a dual-core processor and 2 GB of memory; those minimums can support participation and presenting non-video content, but do not guarantee smooth video or effects on every device. For higher-quality audio and video, effects, and multitasking, Google recommends a modern CPU. Its optimal-use guidance includes a 1080p camera and WebGL 2.0 graphics support. These are guidance levels, not a requirement that every participant buy premium hardware. See Google’s current Meet requirements for supported systems and changing specifications.

  • Use a built-in camera or a compatible USB webcam. If your computer has no suitable camera, an external USB webcam is an option; check that it works with your operating system and available USB port.
  • Allow Meet to use the camera and microphone when your browser or app asks. If you previously blocked access, change the site or app permissions and then reload or re-enter the meeting.
  • For a work or school account, your administrator must enable Meet. Creating meetings may also require an eligible Workspace account.

How to start, schedule, or join a meeting

Start a meeting now or schedule one

  1. Open Meet in a supported browser, or use the Meet or Gmail app on a supported mobile device.
  2. Sign in to the Google account you want associated with the meeting. For work or school, use the account provided by your organization.
  3. Start a meeting now, or schedule one for later. Scheduled meetings created in Google Calendar appear in Meet’s scheduled list.
  4. Allow camera and microphone access, then check that the intended devices are selected before speaking or sharing video.

Join a meeting

You can join by opening the invitation link, selecting the event in Google Calendar, joining from Gmail, or entering a meeting code in Meet. Supported room hardware and phone dial-in are other options when the organization and invitation provide them. Google outlines computer joining options and guest access in its joining instructions.

You can join some meetings without signing in to a Google Account: open the link, enter a name if prompted, and request to join. The host or a participant may need to admit you, especially if you are not on the invitation list. A Workspace administrator can restrict who is allowed to join, so an invitation link is not a guarantee of access. If your browser or device cannot provide video, use the dial-in number and PIN only if they are included in the invitation; phone availability and carrier charges vary.

Why Meet features and limits differ

A missing button does not necessarily mean Meet is broken. Feature access can depend on whether you are signed into a personal or organizational account, the Workspace edition, administrator settings, host controls, age restrictions, encryption constraints, staged feature releases, and device type. First verify the signed-in account; if the feature still is not available, ask the organization’s Workspace administrator. Google describes the dependency in its Meet feature overview.

Google’s help documentation describes consumer-edition meetings as supporting up to 100 participants, while some Workspace editions permit higher capacities. Capacity and meeting-duration rules vary by edition, and the documentation may change; check the current requirements and plan comparison before choosing a plan or relying on a particular limit. Participant counts can include device connections, so a room joining on hardware may affect the total.

How to record a Google Meet

Recording is not available to every account. Google limits it to eligible Workspace editions; the host must permit it, and you must use a computer. Admin settings, Drive access, how the meeting was created, and your role in it can also affect availability.

  1. During an eligible meeting on a computer, open Meeting tools and choose the recording option to start or stop recording.
  2. Participants are notified when recording starts or stops.
  3. After the meeting, look for the recording in the meeting organizer’s Google Drive, in the Google Meet folder. Google emails a link to the organizer and the person who started the recording.

Google says recording stops automatically when everyone leaves or when the meeting reaches a total of eight hours. Breakout rooms are not recorded. If the recording control is missing, check the edition and host permission, then ask the administrator to verify that recording and Drive are enabled and that the account can create Drive files. Recording can also be unavailable when you join only to present or when the meeting was created on room hardware or through certain other processes. See Google’s recording instructions and recording troubleshooting guidance.

How breakout rooms work

Breakout rooms split an eligible meeting into smaller groups. The host creates and starts them during the meeting on a computer. Workspace edition and administrator settings determine whether the host can create rooms; some consumer-account users may be able to join rooms without having the option to create them.

  • Participants can join from supported computers or updated mobile apps and other supported modes.
  • Third-party video-conferencing devices cannot participate in breakout rooms. A Meet Hardware device cannot be pre-assigned to a room before the meeting.
  • Breakout rooms cannot be recorded or live-streamed.

Check Google’s breakout-room requirements for eligible editions and participation details.

Fix common Google Meet problems

You cannot create a meeting

Confirm that you are signed in to the intended Google account. If it is a work or school account, ask the administrator whether Meet is enabled and whether your account can create meetings.

A scheduled meeting is missing

Check that Meet and Calendar are using the same account. Google says only meetings scheduled through Google Calendar appear in Meet’s scheduled list. Open the Calendar event directly if you have it.

The meeting is full

Participant limits depend on the account or Workspace edition. Check the applicable limit in Google’s requirements documentation; limits and eligible plans can change.

Video or audio is choppy

Before replacing hardware, reduce the work Meet must do and help the device stay cool:

  • Keep one Meet tab open and close unused browser tabs and applications.
  • Turn off browser extensions that are not needed for the meeting.
  • Lower camera resolution if the setting is available.
  • Switch to Spotlight view when you do not need to see a gallery of participants.
  • Place the device on a flat, elevated surface to reduce overheating.

Google’s joining and meeting troubleshooting guide covers additional access problems.
