Treat Maps as a planning aid: recommendations, Street View imagery, and offline features vary by location, and the map alone cannot establish which venue or route is best for you.
1. Find places around your destination
Search for the city, neighborhood, or landmark you plan to visit, or open it directly on the map. Then use Explore to look for nearby restaurants, sights, activities, and local favorites. Google says some recommendations adapt to your location and the time of day; trending spots and partner-driven lists appear only in select cities or areas, so you may not see the same options everywhere. See Google Maps Help: Explore.
As you browse, compare candidates against your plans: how close each is to the area you will be in, whether it suits the activity you have in mind, and how you would get there. Maps can help you discover options, but the available guidance does not establish a destination-specific ranking of venues.
2. Inspect a place up close
When Street View imagery is available, use it to get a closer look at the destination and, where covered, its approaches. This can help you orient yourself before arriving. Google presents Street View as a way to explore places up close in its help overview of Google Maps features.

Check the specific place rather than assuming imagery exists or is current. The cited overview does not state capture dates for individual locations, and coverage is not universal.
3. Save a shortlist you can revisit
Save promising candidates to a named list, such as “Visit” or “Maybe,” so you can compare them later instead of relying on memory. Google provides guidance for creating and managing lists on desktop and Android.
Rank #2
Decide whether the list should be private, shared, or collaborative before inviting others. Desktop list guidance covers visibility, sharing, and data export. Android guidance describes inviting collaborators and notes that viewers may see members’ names and profile pictures, as well as who added or edited places and notes. Consider that visibility before adding personal notes.
For saved places, Google’s desktop help says lists are limited to 3,000 entries and recommends signing in to find saved places across devices: Google Maps Help: find and manage saved places. On Android, Google says recently saved and nearby saved places depend on Maps activity; “Nearby saved” may not appear unless saved places are within 25 km (about 16 mi). This describes a particular interface behavior, not a limit on finding saved places generally. See Google Maps Help: find saved places.

Check directions using your intended travel mode and compare the route options against your priorities. Google Maps includes route preferences such as avoiding tolls, ferries, and motorways; availability and route details can vary. The options are useful for comparison, not proof that a suggested route is best for a particular destination.
On mobile, saved frequent trips support driving, transit, and two-wheeler routes. Google’s Android guidance explains the feature at Google Maps Help: saved trips. For walking, cycling, or other travel needs, check the directions available for your specific route rather than assuming a saved-trip feature covers them.

5. Prepare for limited connectivity
If you expect unreliable internet access, download the intended area before you travel, if downloads are available there. Google notes that maps cannot be downloaded in some countries or regions. Offline navigation also has important limits: the full route must fit within the downloaded area, and offline transit, bicycling, and walking directions are unavailable. Google Maps Help states: “When you’re offline, transit, bicycling, or walking directions are unavailable.” Offline driving directions do not provide traffic information or alternate routes. Read Google Maps Help: download areas and navigate offline for Android guidance.
Quick Recap
A quick planning sequence
- Search: Open your destination, then browse Explore for nearby options.
- Inspect: Check Street View for the places and approaches you care about, where imagery exists.
- Shortlist: Save candidates to a named list and set its sharing or collaboration permissions deliberately.
- Compare: Request directions for your intended mode and review relevant route preferences.
- Prepare: If connectivity may be limited, download the area in advance and account for the offline restrictions.
