If you want fewer phone interruptions, Android’s current Driving mode can filter notifications; it does not bring back the former dashboard. If your car has Google built in, you can still use voice controls with Google Maps during navigation, subject to your vehicle and location.
What happened to Google Assistant Driving mode?
Google’s former phone-based Driving Mode offered a voice-oriented dashboard for navigation, calls, messages, and media. Google introduced it in 2021 as “voice-activated help via your Android phone in older cars.” In April 2025, 9to5Google reported that Google confirmed the Assistant Driving Mode bar at the bottom of Google Maps navigation on Android was no longer available. Its launch-era phrase, “Hey Google, let’s drive,” should not be treated as a way to activate that retired dashboard.
Google’s 2021 statement that millions of people in more than 12 countries used the feature every day is historical, not a current usage figure. The mobile move from Assistant toward Gemini is a separate product change; it does not restore the old dashboard or turn Android’s current Driving mode into Gemini.
Use Android Driving mode to limit interruptions
Android’s current Driving mode is a notification mode, not a replacement navigation-and-media dashboard. Set it up while parked:

- Open the Android Settings app.
- Tap Modes > Driving > Set up Driving.
- Under When to turn on automatically, tap While driving, if that option is available.
- Review the notification filters and choose which people or apps can interrupt you.
Google notes that some setup steps require Android 14 or later, and menus can vary by phone. If the path differs, search Settings for “Driving.” These settings manage interruptions; they do not restore the old Assistant dashboard. See Google’s Android instructions for Modes and Do Not Disturb.
Use Google Maps voice controls in a car with Google built in
Google built-in means Google apps are integrated into the car’s infotainment system. It is not the same as Android Auto, which connects a phone to a car display. Google’s cited instructions here cover built-in systems; do not assume a particular control or assistant is available in every vehicle.

- While parked, open Google Maps on the car’s display and start navigation. You can also say, “Ok Google, navigate home,” if voice activation is available.
- During navigation, say “Ok Google” or tap the Assistant microphone on the display.
- Make a brief request, such as “What’s my next turn?”, “How’s traffic ahead?”, “Avoid tolls,” “Restaurants nearby,” or “Exit navigation.”
The steering-wheel control for Assistant depends on the vehicle; check its manual. Google says feature availability can vary by manufacturer, region, language, and data plan. For details, see Google Maps’ car navigation instructions.
Set up Assistant or Gemini on a Google built-in car
On supported cars, Google’s setup guidance calls for creating a driver profile and signing in on the car display. Pairing a phone over Bluetooth may be needed for calls and messages; notification access may be required if you want the assistant to read messages. Online features may require a car data plan or another internet connection. Perform infotainment setup while parked, and follow the vehicle’s own menus and instructions.

Gemini is an optional upgrade for eligible Google built-in cars, not a feature guaranteed across all vehicles. Google says users can switch between Gemini and Assistant in car settings; compatibility and language affect availability. Check your car’s settings or owner’s manual, and consult Google Assistant’s car setup help and Google Built-in’s Gemini and Assistant setup help.
Google’s announcement about Gemini on mobile describes a phone transition, while its car announcement concerns compatible vehicles. Neither means every Android phone has a car assistant upgrade or that every Google built-in car already offers Gemini. Voice control does not remove the need to drive attentively. Set up modes, profiles, pairing, and infotainment while parked; once moving, keep requests brief and voice-first, and follow local driving laws.
