Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer with a playlist text file whose entries are in the exact order you want, then loop that input and send it to YouTube. The demuxer works best when every file has matching streams, codecs, and time bases; if yours differ, normalize them first or use a concat filter that re-encodes.
1. Put the videos in the intended order
Create a plain-text playlist file, for example playlist.txt, with one file entry per video. The order of these lines is the playback order:
file 'intro.mp4'
file 'chapter-01.mp4'
file 'chapter-02.mp4'
file 'outro.mp4'
Save paths relative to FFmpeg’s working directory, or use absolute paths. The concat demuxer uses the list you provide; it does not infer the order you intended from filenames. A shell wildcard can expand files in an order you did not expect, so check the playlist itself before streaming. For filenames containing quotes or other special characters, follow the escaping rules in the FFmpeg formats documentation.
2. Check whether the files are compatible
The concat demuxer expects the files to have the same streams, codecs, and time bases. A playlist can be correctly ordered and still fail or behave badly at a boundary if its media properties do not match. See the concat demuxer requirements.

When the sources already match
Use the demuxer directly if all files have compatible video and audio streams and timing. Check representative files’ codec, resolution, frame rate, audio layout, and duration metadata before relying on the sequence for a long-running stream.
When the sources differ
Choose a common profile and transcode the source files to it before concatenating, or use FFmpeg’s concat filter to decode, join, and re-encode them. FFmpeg’s concatenation FAQ distinguishes the demuxer route from the filter route: the filter is appropriate when re-encoding is needed. Transcoding takes processing time and may affect image or sound quality; exact filter syntax and settings depend on the files and the output you want.

| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Normalize files, then use the concat demuxer | Files can be made to share compatible stream properties | Requires preparation and storage for normalized copies |
| Use the concat filter and re-encode | Sources differ and need decoded processing | Uses more compute and requires an encoding-quality decision |
3. Loop the playlist and send it to YouTube
This illustrative command shows the overall shape for a pre-normalized playlist. It has not been tested against your files or FFmpeg build, so adapt and validate it before relying on it:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k
-g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv "rtmps://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY"
-stream_loop -1requests indefinite looping of the input sequence.-f concatselects the concat demuxer, and-i playlist.txtsupplies its ordered list.-rereads the input at its native rate rather than sending the sequence as fast as possible.-c:v,-c:a, and the bitrate and GOP options specify example output encoding settings; they may need to change for your sources and YouTube’s current guidance.-f flvselects the output container used here for RTMP/RTMPS delivery.
FFmpeg options apply to the next input or output they precede. Keep input options such as looping and concat demuxing before the input they affect, and output encoding and muxing options before the destination URL. See the FFmpeg documentation for option scope and ordering.

Choose bitrate and keyframes for the actual output
The example’s 4500k video bitrate is not a universal recommendation. Replace it using YouTube’s current encoder guidance for your resolution, frame rate, and codec, and make sure your upload connection can sustain the output. YouTube’s live encoder help page, accessed October 3, 2026, lists H.264 recommendations of 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps; consult the current resolution-specific table because these platform recommendations can change.
YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. In the example, -g 60 corresponds to a two-second GOP only at 30 fps. Recalculate the GOP for a different frame rate. YouTube’s encoder guidance also lists CBR and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS settings.

Use the correct YouTube destination securely
In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the current server URL and stream key into the command in place of the example destination. YouTube recommends encrypted RTMPS. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it in an article, screenshot, command example, or public log.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.4. Test the sequence and monitor stream health
- Start with a private or otherwise safe test stream before scheduling a public broadcast.
- Use representative clips with moving video and audio, not just a static frame, and verify that each clip plays in the listed order.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and messages while the test is running.
- Confirm the actual output codec, frame rate, keyframe interval, bitrate, and audio codec against YouTube’s current recommendations.
A command that produces a valid stream does not guarantee seamless transitions. Source duration metadata, timestamps, audio layout, and concat behavior at file boundaries can affect playback during a long loop.
5. Troubleshoot order, transitions, and ingestion
- Clips play in the wrong order: Open
playlist.txtand inspect the actual line sequence. Do not assume the order created by a wildcard matches your intended sequence. - Playback stalls or breaks at a clip boundary: Check that files have compatible streams, codecs, and time bases; inspect duration and timestamp behavior; and normalize the sources or use the concat-filter route if needed.
- YouTube reports stream-health or ingestion problems: Compare the actual output profile with YouTube’s current recommendations and check whether the upload connection can sustain the chosen bitrate. The fault may be output settings rather than playlist order.
- The command behaves differently than expected: Check which input or output each option precedes, then validate the command with your installed FFmpeg version and representative source files.
Or let it run in the cloud
