What you need before starting
- A meditation video file that plays correctly, with the audio you intend viewers to hear.
- FFmpeg installed with the H.264 encoder and RTMPS protocol support available in your build.
- A YouTube Live stream configured in Live Control Room, where you can copy its server URL and stream key.
- A stable upload connection with enough capacity for your chosen video and audio bitrates.
Decide the target resolution and frame rate first. YouTube’s recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so there is no single setting that suits every stream.
Create the YouTube Live stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream into your encoder configuration. Use the RTMPS address when the endpoint and your FFmpeg build support it. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and recommends it for YouTube Live (YouTube encoder settings).
- Keep the key private. It is the credential that lets an encoder send video to your stream; do not publish it in a script, screenshot, or shared log. If it is exposed, replace it in Live Control Room.
Use the exact URL and key provided for your stream. The placeholder destination in the command below is not a real YouTube endpoint.
Choose YouTube-compatible video and audio settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; consult the current encoder-settings table for the exact combination you plan to use.

For each row, the listed figure is video bitrate; add audio bitrate when estimating total upload demand. These are H.264 examples, not values to apply to other codecs or every resolution. Use YouTube’s current table for your specific combination.
For a two-second keyframe interval, set the GOP size to about twice the frame rate: for example, 60 frames at 30 fps. If your source runs at another frame rate, adjust accordingly. The command below uses CBR-style target and maximum video rates; confirm that the resulting output matches the selected YouTube settings.

Run FFmpeg with an infinite input loop
Replace the destination placeholder with the full RTMPS server URL and stream key copied from Live Control Room. Keep the URL private because it contains your stream key.

The sample’s 6 Mbps video rate corresponds to YouTube’s recommended H.264 setting for 720p30, not 1080p30. For 1080p30, YouTube’s current recommendation is 10 Mbps; for 720p60, 8 Mbps; and for 1080p60, 12 Mbps (YouTube encoder-settings guidance, accessed 2026-10-03).

The encoder must be available in your FFmpeg build.-b:vsets the target video bitrate;-maxrateand-bufsizeconstrain rate behavior. Select bitrate values for the actual output profile.-pix_fmt yuv420pselects a commonly accepted pixel format;-g 60sets a 60-frame GOP, a two-second interval at 30 fps.-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100encodes AAC audio at the example bitrate and sample rate. Check the input audio and your planned stream configuration.-f flvselects the output container commonly used for RTMP-family ingest.
FFmpeg documents -re as native-rate input reading that is useful when output packet timing matters, including live streaming. Apply it here to the file input, not blindly to an actual live capture input; the FFmpeg documentation warns that low read-rate settings on true live inputs can cause packet loss (FFmpeg command-line documentation).
Test the stream before leaving it unattended
- Start FFmpeg and look for errors in the terminal. Confirm the process continues running rather than exiting after one pass.
- Open the stream preview in Live Control Room. Check video, audio, and stream-health messages, then confirm the public or scheduled watch page opens as intended.
- Inspect a loop boundary. The video returns to its beginning each time; FFmpeg does not automatically make the image or sound transition seamless.
- Run a test with movement and audio similar to the intended stream. If you have configured a backup encoder, YouTube recommends testing its failover as well.
At the loop seam, a visible or audible jump may come from the content itself or from the file’s encoding and timing. A secondary FFmpeg technical guide notes that stream-copy looping can depend on the source beginning on a keyframe and that mismatched audio and video lengths may contribute to pauses. Inspect the actual file and preview rather than assuming re-encoding will resolve every seam (FFmpeg concatenation guide).

Check upload capacity and run duration
YouTube advises that total stream bitrate should not exceed available upload bandwidth. Its streaming tips recommend 20% upload headroom beyond the combined primary and backup bitrate; test the connection and account for other devices and network traffic (YouTube streaming tips). A connection interruption, host shutdown, FFmpeg failure, or ingest problem can stop the stream even though the input-loop option is infinite.
The loop continues only while the FFmpeg process and its host remain active and able to send data. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a stream longer than that will be archived in full (YouTube encoder setup).

Troubleshoot common problems

Copyright, reused content, and monetization
Using meditation footage does not by itself establish that a stream is compliant, monetizable, or prohibited. YouTube requires live-stream content to comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Make sure you have the necessary rights to both the video and music, and check current YouTube Partner Program requirements and content policies before relying on monetization. YouTube’s encoder setup documentation says eligible Partner Program creators can monetize live streams, but it does not make every looping stream eligible (YouTube encoder setup).
