FFmpeg can join compatible playlist clips into one continuous file without re-encoding; if their video or audio streams differ, normalize them or use FFmpeg’s concat filter to re-encode. Load the finished file into OBS as a Media Source, or use OBS’s VLC Video Source to play separate files as a playlist. Neither option guarantees a smooth YouTube stream: check the output, leave upload-bandwidth headroom, and test the full path in YouTube Live Control Room.
Choose between one combined file and an OBS playlist
Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer with stream copy when the clips have compatible streams and you want one file quickly, without another lossy encode. If the clips have different stream properties, normalize them to matching settings or use the concat filter, which re-encodes. If you want to keep files separate and control playlist playback in OBS, use its VLC Video Source; VLC must be installed. FFmpeg is not required just to play a compatible file in OBS.
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Concat demuxer with stream copy | Clips with matching stream properties that should become one file | Fast and avoids generational quality loss, but does not normalize incompatible streams or apply filters |
| Concat filter with re-encoding | Clips that need normalization or other processing to join correctly | Uses compute and takes longer; target settings must be chosen deliberately |
| OBS Media Source | Playing one prepared file in OBS | Use after combining or preparing the file; it is not a playlist manager |
| OBS VLC Video Source | Keeping separate files as a playable playlist in OBS | Requires VLC installed and does not itself make an unstable live connection reliable |
Inspect the clips before combining them
Before choosing a command, check the video and audio streams in every file: codecs, time bases, durations, frame dimensions, frame rates, and audio layouts. The concat demuxer expects matching streams, including codecs and time base. FFmpeg also warns that inaccurate duration information can cause artifacts at clip boundaries. A shared file extension is not proof that two clips are compatible.
If the files are not compatible, decide on a common output resolution, frame rate, and audio setup before converting. Preserve the intended aspect ratio rather than stretching a clip, and do not expect upscaling to add detail that is absent from the source. There is no single CRF, preset, resolution, or bitrate that is right for every source and computer. After conversion, check synchronization and the joins between clips.

Join compatible clips with FFmpeg stream copy
1. Make a concat list
Create a plain-text file named playlist.ffconcat in the same folder as the media, with one entry per clip in playback order:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'clip-01.mp4'
file 'clip-02.mp4'
file 'clip-03.mp4'
Use paths that point to the actual files. Keep the list and media under your control. The -safe 0 option below allows paths that FFmpeg would otherwise reject as unsafe; include it only when your list needs such paths.
2. Concatenate without re-encoding
Run this from the directory containing the list and clips:

ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.ffconcat -c copy combined.mp4
This copies compressed audio and video packets rather than decoding and encoding them. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer adjusts timestamps so the first file starts at zero and each following file starts after the prior file’s duration. Because the streams are copied, the operation is fast and avoids the quality loss associated with another encode—but it cannot fix incompatible codecs or time bases, apply filters, or repair incorrect source duration information.
Recommended Free Tools
As the FFmpeg documentation puts it, “Streamcopy is useful for changing the elementary stream count, container format, or modifying container-level metadata.” It is not a general-purpose format normalizer.
Normalize or re-encode clips that differ
When important stream properties differ, first convert the clips to a common target format and then concatenate the compatible outputs, or use FFmpeg’s concat filter for a workflow that needs re-encoding. The filter requires correctly mapped and synchronized streams, so a safe command depends on the actual number and layout of each file’s audio and video streams. Do not copy a generic filter command without confirming those details.

- Allow time and compute capacity for encoding; unlike stream copy, re-encoding decodes and encodes the media.
- Review the completed file from start to finish, especially audio/video sync, transitions, and the first and last frames at each join.
Load the result into OBS
For one combined file: Media Source
In OBS, add a Media Source and select combined.mp4 (or your prepared output). Preview the beginning, middle, and transitions before going live. If you update or replace the file, verify that OBS is playing the intended version.
For separate playlist files: VLC Video Source
If you want OBS to play a playlist without first creating one combined file, add a VLC Video Source and configure its playlist controls. VLC must be installed. This keeps the clips separate; it does not normalize mismatched media or guarantee uninterrupted playback. Test the sequence and transitions in OBS before streaming.

Set up and test the YouTube live stream
Playlist conversion and YouTube live encoding are separate parts of the workflow. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR encoding; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not over four seconds. Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate for the encoder and connection you actually have. YouTube says Live Control Room detects encoder settings and transcodes the incoming live stream for viewer formats.
Do a private or otherwise appropriate test before the event, check YouTube’s live preview, and monitor stream health. A video that plays smoothly from disk can still buffer for viewers if the upstream connection is too slow or unreliable. YouTube’s streaming tips say the total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommend leaving 20% headroom: “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).”
Do not confuse YouTube’s upload recommendations with its live-encoder guidance. For video uploads, YouTube recommends MP4, H.264, supported audio such as AAC-LC, a 48 kHz sample rate, and retaining the frame rate used for recording. Those upload recommendations are not a universal recipe for an OBS live encoder.

Troubleshoot joins, playback, and stream buffering
- FFmpeg reports stream or timestamp errors: recheck codecs, time bases, stream layouts, and durations. Stream copy only works when the inputs are compatible; normalize the clips or use a correctly mapped concat-filter workflow.
- Audio or video jumps at a clip boundary: inspect source duration metadata and verify the output at each join. FFmpeg warns that incorrect duration information can introduce boundary artifacts.
- Audio and video drift after re-encoding: confirm the inputs’ stream layout and synchronization, then review the filter mapping and output timing. Do not assume a generic command matches files with different stream arrangements.
- OBS does not play the playlist: for separate files, confirm VLC is installed and that the VLC Video Source playlist points to valid files. For one prepared asset, use a Media Source and check its selected file.
- The file is smooth locally but YouTube buffers: check the live stream’s total bitrate against available upload capacity, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and inspect YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and stream health.
- The stream looks different to viewers: YouTube transcodes the incoming live feed for viewer formats. Check the incoming encoder settings and live preview rather than assuming the local OBS preview is identical to every viewer’s playback.
FFmpeg documentation is regenerated as the project changes, and OBS and YouTube settings can also change. Confirm the available labels and recommendations in the installed FFmpeg/OBS versions and YouTube Live Control Room; the values above reflect official guidance checked on October 3, 2026.
