You can stream 4K at 60 fps to YouTube Live from India with FFmpeg, provided your encoder can sustain the workload and your connection has enough stable upload capacity. For SDR H.264, YouTube recommends 50 Mbps video bitrate; its published 20% upload headroom guidance makes approximately 62.5 Mbps a sensible minimum planning target for one stream, before other network use. The settings below target a file input encoded as SDR H.264. Device capture and other codecs need adapted inputs or encoder settings.

Recommended settings for YouTube 4K60

YouTube’s live-ingest guidance supports up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval, and sets different bitrate targets by codec. These are live-stream ingest figures, not YouTube’s separate recommendations for uploaded videos. See YouTube’s encoder settings.

Codec YouTube minimum for 2160p60 YouTube recommended for 2160p60 Practical note
H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps A familiar option, but its recommended bitrate requires more upload capacity.
H.265 (HEVC) 10 Mbps 35 Mbps Confirm that your FFmpeg build and chosen workflow support the encoder and YouTube ingest.
AV1 10 Mbps 35 Mbps Confirm encoder and workflow support; the published 2160p60 bitrate figures match H.265.

These values are YouTube’s published live guidance current in 2026. They are not a guarantee that a particular encoder or network can maintain a 4K60 stream.

Picture, keyframes and latency

  • Set output to 3840×2160 at 60 frames per second. YouTube’s keyframe recommendation is 2 seconds; at 60 fps, that is 120 frames. Its guidance gives a 4-second maximum.
  • Use CBR behavior and the bitrate appropriate to the codec. The example below sets the H.264 video rate to 50 Mbps.
  • For SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit. This example uses those SDR color characteristics and yuv420p.
  • 4K streams cannot use YouTube’s low-latency option; plan on normal latency.
  • YouTube recommends H.265 for HDR. HDR needs a deliberately configured and tested HDR workflow; the command below is not one.

Prepare YouTube Live and FFmpeg

  1. Create or select your live event. In YouTube Live Control Room, open the event’s stream settings and copy the stream URL and stream key. YouTube explains these settings at Manage live stream settings. Keep the key private: do not put a real key in a public command, screenshot, log, or shared shell history.
  2. Check the FFmpeg build. Confirm it includes libx264 and the required output protocol. The available encoders and protocols vary by build. The FFmpeg manual and full FFmpeg documentation describe its command structure and options.
  3. Check the input. The command below assumes a local video file with a video stream and optional audio. For a camera, capture card, or screen, replace the file input with the appropriate device-specific input options for your operating system; those options cannot be universal.
  4. Choose a supported endpoint. The example uses an RTMP URL placeholder. Use YouTube’s RTMPS URL instead when your FFmpeg build supports the secure transport and your workflow accepts it.

Run an SDR H.264 4K60 stream from a file

Replace input.mp4, YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST, and YOUR_STREAM_KEY. This is a configuration template assembled from published YouTube targets and FFmpeg options; it is not a tested command guaranteed to work unchanged with every FFmpeg build or input.

ffmpeg -re -i "input.mp4"
  -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a?
  -vf "scale=3840:2160,fps=60,format=yuv420p"
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast
  -b:v 50M -minrate 50M -maxrate 50M -bufsize 100M
  -r 60 -g 120 -keyint_min 120
  -pix_fmt yuv420p -color_primaries bt709 -color_trc bt709 -colorspace bt709
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "rtmp://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"

What the important options do

  • -re reads a file at its native pace to approximate a live input. FFmpeg documents this use for simulating live input from a file. Do not add it automatically to actual live capture sources.
  • -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? selects the first video stream and includes audio if present. If the file has multiple audio tracks or unusual stream layouts, inspect and map the intended tracks.
  • -vf "scale=3840:2160,fps=60,..." scales and sets the output to 4K60. Scaling a lower-resolution or lower-frame-rate source does not create genuine captured detail or motion; it only changes output dimensions and cadence.
  • -b:v, -minrate, and -maxrate set the intended video rate behavior; -bufsize sets the rate-control buffer. Verify how the installed FFmpeg and encoder version interpret these options.
  • -g 120 and -keyint_min 120 target a 120-frame GOP, which is two seconds at 60 fps. Check encoder output and YouTube stream health rather than assuming options were applied as intended.
  • -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 encodes audio as AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. This is the example’s audio configuration, not a guarantee of the right mix or loudness for every program.

For H.265 or AV1, select an encoder actually available in your build and adapt the command and rate control; do not simply reuse the H.264-specific options. YouTube’s recommendation for either codec at 2160p60 is 35 Mbps. Encoder throughput depends on the source, chosen encoder, build, and hardware; YouTube’s bitrate table does not specify a CPU or GPU minimum that guarantees real-time 4K60.

Plan upload capacity in India

YouTube recommends having 20% more upload bandwidth than the stream bitrate and says the total stream bitrate must fit within available upload capacity. For the recommended 50 Mbps H.264 stream, adding that margin gives 62.5 Mbps of stable outbound capacity for one stream. This is arithmetic applied to YouTube’s guidance, not an India-wide speed figure. Read YouTube’s streaming tips.

  • Test upload, not just download, from the actual streaming location. Repeat tests at the time you expect to broadcast; a plan’s advertised speed does not prove sustained outbound performance there.
  • Include other household or venue traffic in the budget. If you run a backup stream, its bitrate also uses upload capacity.
  • Run an end-to-end test from FFmpeg to YouTube over the intended network and route. Shared networks can constrain your capacity, and interruptions can break the stream.
  • If the uplink cannot sustain the target with headroom, reduce resolution or frame rate, or consider a supported codec with a lower recommended bitrate. Test the new configuration and confirm playback and stream health.

YouTube’s cited guidance does not specify a special India-only bitrate, name a universally suitable Indian ISP, or establish a regional ingest endpoint. Local measurement and an end-to-end test are more useful than assuming one connection or provider will work everywhere.

Preflight, test and monitor

  1. Start a test stream before the event using representative motion and audio; a static test image may not expose the same encoding or network load.
  2. Confirm YouTube detects the intended 2160p60 signal, and check the stream-health messages in Live Control Room.
  3. Watch both FFmpeg’s output and YouTube’s stream health during the broadcast. Keep a lower-resolution or lower-bitrate configuration ready if the connection cannot hold steady.
  4. Protect the stream key. Avoid exposing it in logs, screenshots, public scripts, or shell history; rotate it through YouTube’s controls if it is exposed.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
YouTube reports an unstable or interrupted stream Insufficient or variable upload capacity, competing traffic, or temporary connection loss. Measure outbound upload at the venue, reserve the 20% margin, reduce other network use, and test a lower bitrate or resolution. Check FFmpeg output and YouTube stream health.
Stream starts, but YouTube does not detect 2160p60 Input or output frame rate/resolution differs from the intended settings, or the encoder options were not applied as expected. Inspect the source and FFmpeg output, verify the filter and encoder configuration for your build, and confirm YouTube’s detected format during a test.
FFmpeg says the encoder or protocol is unavailable The installed build lacks the selected encoder or transport support. Check available encoders and protocols in that build, install a build that includes what your workflow needs, or select a supported codec and endpoint.
Video works but audio is missing or wrong The source has no audio, the wrong track was selected, or the optional audio map did not match the file’s streams. Inspect the input streams and explicitly map the intended audio track. Test the complete audio path before going live.
Encoding falls behind or the output stutters despite adequate upload The encoder or hardware may not sustain real-time 4K60 for this source and configuration. Check FFmpeg’s output for processing speed and errors; try a faster supported preset, a lower output load, or hardware encoding if available, then repeat the end-to-end test. There is no universal hardware minimum in YouTube’s guidance.
RTMPS connection fails The FFmpeg build or configured workflow may not support the required secure transport or URL format. Confirm protocol support and the exact URL in YouTube’s stream settings; test with the endpoint your build supports, keeping the stream key private.

FFmpeg’s full documentation describes a FIFO muxer pattern that can attempt RTMP recovery after temporary failure. It requires adaptation and testing; it is not a guarantee that a stream will survive an outage.
