To loop an ordered set of video clips into a YouTube Live stream, list them in an FFmpeg concat file, then use the concat demuxer with -stream_loop -1 and a real-time-paced FFmpeg output. This works best when the clips have matching stream layouts, codecs, and time bases. YouTube supplies the ingest URL and stream key; keep the key private and check YouTube’s current encoder settings before broadcasting.

Create the FFmpeg concat file

Make a plain-text file named playlist.ffconcat. Its first line must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0, with no blank line, extra spaces, or byte-order mark before it. Add one file directive for each clip, in the order you want them played:

ffconcat version 1.0
file 'clip1.mp4'
file 'clip2.mp4'
file 'clip3.mp4'

Use simple relative paths from the working directory where practical. The concat file has its own quoting and escaping rules; it is not a shell command, so paths with spaces or special characters must be escaped according to FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation.

FFmpeg’s safe-path check is enabled by default and accepts simple relative names. For trusted absolute paths or paths rejected as unsafe, place -safe 0 before -i in the command. Only do this with a playlist you control: it relaxes path restrictions.

Check whether the clips can be concatenated

The concat demuxer presents the clips as one virtual input; it does not re-encode them or make unlike files compatible. FFmpeg says the demuxer reads the listed files and demuxes them one after another as if their packets had been muxed together. Corresponding clips need the same streams (such as both having video and audio), codecs, and time bases. If they differ, normalize them to a common format first or use a filter-based workflow.

  • Use the demuxer when the inputs are compatible and you want to avoid re-encoding.
  • Consider the concat filter when inputs need re-encoding or per-file normalization, or when you need transitions. Concatenating demuxer inputs plays files sequentially; it does not render transitions. FFmpeg’s FAQ explains the distinction.

Check clip durations and audio/video boundaries, too. The demuxer schedules each following file using the previous file’s duration. Incorrect duration metadata, truncated clips, or tracks with different lengths can cause gaps or artifacts at joins. If you know the correct duration, a duration directive can override it; see the concat demuxer documentation for its syntax.

Send the loop to YouTube Live with FFmpeg

This representative RTMP(S) command shows the workflow, not a tested or universal preset. Replace the destination with the ingest URL and stream key YouTube provides. Do not publish or share the key.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.ffconcat
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -r 30 -g 60 -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "$INGEST_URL/$STREAM_KEY"
  1. -re reads the file-based input at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as storage allows.
  2. -stream_loop -1 repeats the concat input indefinitely.
  3. -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.ffconcat selects the concat demuxer and opens the playlist. Keep -safe 0 only when needed for a trusted playlist; omit it for simple relative paths that pass the default safety check.
  4. The video and audio options encode the output for this example. The sample uses 30 fps, so -g 60 sets a 60-frame GOP, or a two-second keyframe interval. At another frame rate, choose the GOP length to match YouTube’s recommended two-second interval.
  5. -f flv sends an FLV stream to the supplied RTMP(S) destination.

The sample’s 4500 kbps video rate is not a general recommendation. Choose resolution and bitrate based on the source, target frame rate, codec, and reliable upload capacity. The sample also assumes the input has audio. If it does not, plan a compatible audio stream—such as a deliberate silent-audio source—instead of assuming FFmpeg will create one automatically.

Verify YouTube Live encoder settings

YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For stereo, its advanced guidance lists 44.1 kHz audio at 128 kbps. Check the YouTube live encoder settings when setting up: bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate and can change. YouTube recommends RTMPS for an encrypted connection.

Use the ingest URL and stream name shown for your broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Before going live, YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion representative of the actual stream, then monitoring health messages during the broadcast.

Troubleshoot common concat and ingest problems

  • FFmpeg does not recognize the playlist: Make sure the first line is exactly ffconcat version 1.0, with no leading blank, extra spaces, or byte-order mark. Confirm that the filename and input path are correct.
  • FFmpeg rejects a path: Try a simple relative filename first. For a trusted playlist that needs an absolute or otherwise unsafe path, add -safe 0 before -i. Check that spaces and special characters follow concat-file escaping rules.
  • Clips fail to join or produce artifacts: Compare their stream layouts, codecs, and time bases. Confirm duration metadata and check for truncated files or mismatched audio/video lengths. Normalize incompatible sources or switch to a filter-based workflow when re-encoding is required.
  • The stream does not connect or YouTube reports an error: Verify the ingest URL and stream key in Live Control Room, and keep the key private. Inspect YouTube’s stream status and health messages; the Live Streaming API documents states such as active, ready, inactive, and error, and health values including good, ok, bad, and noData. See the YouTube Live Streaming API.
  • YouTube flags stream health: Check that your upload can sustain the selected output bitrate, keyframes follow the recommended interval, and audio and motion are present as intended. Test the complete setup before the broadcast and monitor YouTube’s messages while it runs.
