Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to line up compatible media files, then configure FFmpeg separately to repeat the input, encode or pass through a YouTube-compatible live output, and send it to your YouTube Live event. A concat file only sequences files: it does not fix mismatched codecs, create a live stream by itself, or give you permission to broadcast the music.
Before you begin: clear the music rights
Do not go live until you have the rights needed to broadcast every track. YouTube scans livestreams for third-party content, and a stream may be interrupted or terminated when a match is detected. If you have licensed music from a rights holder that uses Content ID, the rights holder may also need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. A credit, purchased track, “royalty-free” label, or license for ordinary uploads does not by itself establish permission for a continuous livestream. Read YouTube’s Terms of Service and copyright guidance for live streams, and confirm the scope of your license directly with the rights holder.
Choose the right FFmpeg concat method
FFmpeg offers two relevant approaches. The concat demuxer reads a playlist as one virtual input without first joining or normalizing the media. Its compatibility requirement is strict: the files need the same streams, including codecs and time bases. As the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation puts it, “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).”

Do not assume that matching extensions, filenames, or apparent playback compatibility means the streams are suitable for the demuxer. Inspect the actual streams first.

Inspect and standardize the media
Check each file’s streams
Use a media-inspection tool such as ffprobe to examine every file before making the playlist. Compare the video and audio streams, codecs, time bases, and stream layout across files. Check whether the audio and video tracks in each file have comparable durations; a mismatch can affect where the next file begins.
If streams do not match, create compatible versions first or build a concat-filter workflow that converts them during concatenation. Do not try to solve incompatible inputs just by changing the playlist.

Check timing as well as codecs
The demuxer places each file after the preceding one using timestamps derived from file durations. Unequal stream lengths can leave gaps, and inaccurate duration metadata can cause artifacts. The concat demuxer supports a duration directive to override a stored duration when you have an accurate value and need to correct timing. Do not guess durations: verify them against the media.
Create the concat playlist
Make a plain-text file named, for example, playlist.ffconcat, and list the media in playback order:

- For automatic format recognition,
ffconcat version 1.0must be the exact first line: no leading whitespace and no byte-order mark. - The script uses extended-ASCII text according to the FFmpeg documentation. Quote or escape paths with spaces or special characters according to FFmpeg’s syntax.
- Relative paths are convenient when the playlist and media are together, but they still need to resolve from FFmpeg’s working context.
- Path escaping can depend on the operating system and shell. Check the paths in your actual environment rather than assuming one quoting style works everywhere.
Loop the playlist and send a live output
The concat list determines sequence; it does not make the sequence repeat indefinitely. Select FFmpeg’s input-looping behavior and realtime pacing for your live-input workflow, then configure the output for YouTube. The exact command depends on whether your sources are audio-only or include video, the codecs and containers in those sources, and your FFmpeg build. Test with your real files rather than treating one command as universal.
Assemble the command with these separate parts:
- Read the playlist. Point FFmpeg to the concat demuxer and your playlist file.
- Set the live-input behavior. Configure repetition and realtime pacing appropriate to the input. Looping controls whether the sequence starts again; realtime pacing controls whether it is delivered at a live rate.
- Choose output streams and encoding. Use codec copy only if the existing streams are suitable for the chosen output container and YouTube ingest. Otherwise, encode to supported output codecs. Audio-only and audio-plus-video outputs need different stream mapping and options.
- Set the destination. Use the current ingest address and stream name/key provided for your own YouTube Live event. Keep the key private; do not put a real key in a shared script or public post.
YouTube’s live encoder settings support RTMP and RTMPS ingest, with RTMPS recommended for encrypted transport. The guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. For audio, it recommends AAC or MP3 at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz stereo. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee of quality or uninterrupted streaming.

Choose the video bitrate from YouTube’s current table for your selected resolution, frame rate, and codec, and leave upload headroom. The right setting depends on the format you actually send and the available connection; do not reuse a bitrate intended for a different resolution or frame rate. Recheck YouTube’s guidance when configuring the encoder because platform settings can change.
Connect the YouTube event and preflight
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live event you intend to use.
- Copy that event’s current ingestion address and stream name/key into your encoder configuration. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation describes ingestion addresses, stream names, status, and health fields.
- Start FFmpeg and confirm that YouTube reports incoming data and a healthy stream. Keep Live Control Room open and watch stream health and any messages.
- Test with audio and visual motion similar to the actual programme. A static image with music may not reveal the same encoding or bitrate problems as moving video.
Troubleshoot common failures
