Connect a compatible controller to your Apple Silicon Mac through Bluetooth or USB, confirm that macOS and MaPC detect it, then check the game’s own input settings. MaPC can translate PlayStation-style controllers, including DualShock 4, DualSense, and Backbone One PlayStation Edition, for games that expect an Xbox controller. A keyboard and mouse remain the fallback for titles that do not accept a gamepad.

What you need before connecting an input device

MaPC is a native Mac application in public beta. The current platform requirements stated by MaPC are an Apple Silicon Mac (M1 or later) running macOS 15 or newer. Plan for about 30 GB of free storage for the compatibility engine and games. MaPC can offer to install Rosetta 2 when it is needed by a component.

MaPC connects Steam, Epic Games, and GOG libraries and launches Windows games through compatibility engines. Controller support is therefore determined by several layers: macOS must recognize the hardware, MaPC must expose it to the Windows game environment, and the game must support the resulting controller profile. A controller that works in one title can still be ignored by another.

  • MaPC version: The latest changelog entry identified here is MaPC 1.1.3 Beta, dated October 18, 2026. Beta labels matter: menu names and compatibility behavior can change between releases.
  • Mac hardware: Apple Silicon, M1 or later.
  • Operating system: macOS 15 or later.
  • Storage: Approximately 30 GB free for the engine and installed games; individual games require additional space.
  • Game support: The title must accept controller input through its launcher and compatibility layer. Kernel-level anti-cheat games cannot run on macOS, regardless of the controller used.

MaPC states that many games run, some need adjustments, and some do not run. Its terms do not promise that a particular game will run or run well, so treat input compatibility as title-specific rather than as a guarantee for the whole library.

Connect a controller over Bluetooth

Bluetooth is the most convenient option when your Mac has a reliable wireless connection and you want to avoid a cable or adapter. Apple supports compatible game controllers through either Bluetooth or a wired connection.

  1. Enter pairing mode. Use the controller manufacturer’s button combination or switch to make the controller discoverable. The indicator light usually flashes while it is waiting for a connection.
  2. Open Bluetooth settings. On the Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth.
  3. Connect the device. Find the controller in the nearby-devices list and select Connect. If macOS requests confirmation or a pairing code, accept it or enter the code shown on screen.
  4. Leave the controller connected. Keep it awake while you open MaPC; some models power down when they sit idle and may disappear from the game.
  5. Check MaPC before launching a long session. Open MaPC’s Controllers tab and verify that the device appears. This tab shows what macOS is presenting to MaPC and is the quickest way to separate a Bluetooth problem from a game-configuration problem.
  6. Launch the title and test its input menu. Confirm movement, face buttons, shoulder buttons, triggers, stick clicks, and menu navigation before starting gameplay.

If the controller does not appear in Bluetooth, turn it off, repeat its discovery-mode sequence, and try again. A controller that was paired with another computer or console may need its old connection cleared before it will advertise itself to the Mac.

Connect a controller with a cable

A wired connection often provides the simplest diagnostic path: there is no Bluetooth pairing state to troubleshoot, and the controller receives power from the Mac. Connect the controller directly, then open MaPC and inspect the Controllers tab.

Check both ends of the connection before buying anything. Some Macs provide USB-C ports while a controller may use USB-A or a proprietary connector. Apple notes that certain Mac-and-controller combinations require a USB adapter, sold separately. An adapter is only necessary when the plug and the Mac’s available port do not match; it does not make an unsupported controller profile compatible with a game.

  • 2 Pro back paddle buttons, extra R4/L4 bumpers, and tactile bumpers & D-pad for enhanced control and faster response. Includes a multifunctional charging dock and USB-C adapter for seamless connectivity.
  • Use a data-capable cable rather than a charge-only cable.
  • Try another Mac port if the controller does not appear.
  • Inspect the cable for damage and confirm that the controller is switched on.
  • If a hub is involved, connect directly to the Mac while testing so the hub is not an additional failure point.
  • After changing from Bluetooth to USB, close and relaunch the game so it enumerates the controller again.

If the controller works over USB but not Bluetooth, use the wired connection while you remove the stale Bluetooth pairing and pair the controller again. If it appears in macOS and MaPC over both paths but fails only inside one game, focus on that game’s input profile instead of buying another cable or adapter.

Use a PlayStation-style controller in Xbox-only games

MaPC 1.0.5 added a translation option for PlayStation-style controllers in games that only accept an Xbox controller profile. The changelog specifically names DualShock 4, DualSense, and Backbone One PlayStation Edition. The switch is enabled by default in MaPC’s Controllers tab.

  1. Pair the controller through Bluetooth or connect it by USB.
  2. Open MaPC and select Controllers.
  3. Confirm that the controller is listed.
  4. Leave the PlayStation-to-Xbox translation switch enabled when launching a title that expects Xbox input.
  5. Start the game and check its controller settings. The game may show Xbox button prompts even though the physical labels on the controller are PlayStation symbols.
  6. Test every important control. In particular, verify the equivalent of the confirm, cancel, shoulder, trigger, and stick-click inputs.

This feature translates the controller profile; it does not guarantee that every game will work. If the title still ignores the device, quit the game, confirm the controller remains visible in MaPC, and relaunch after checking the switch. Some games cache their input devices only when they start.

When a problem persists, record the game name, Mac model, macOS version, and MaPC log before contacting MaPC support. Those details identify whether the failure is in pairing, profile translation, the compatibility engine, or the game itself.

Configure the game after MaPC detects the controller

Detection in MaPC is not the final test. Most games have their own controller-selection, layout, or binding screen. Open that screen before playing and look for an option such as Controller, Gamepad, Input, or Bindings.

  • Choose the active device: If the game lists keyboard, mouse, and multiple controllers, select the controller you intend to use.
  • Restore a known layout: Use the game’s reset-to-default option when only some controls respond. This removes an accidental custom binding from the diagnosis.
  • Test analog inputs: Move both sticks through their full range and squeeze each trigger gradually. A game may recognize digital buttons while failing to receive an analog axis correctly.
  • Check menu navigation: Use the controller to open a menu, move between items, confirm, cancel, and pause. Menu navigation can use a different profile from gameplay.
  • Watch the prompts: Xbox-style prompts are expected when MaPC’s translation is active. They describe the translated profile, not the symbols printed on a PlayStation-style controller.
  • Restart after changes: If you enable translation, change the active device, or switch from Bluetooth to USB, restart the game so it rereads the controller.

Apple’s Game Controller guidance describes standardized controller profiles, but individual games decide which controls they use. Consequently, a controller can be fully visible to macOS and still have unused buttons, missing vibration, or an incomplete layout in a particular title.

Use a keyboard and mouse when a gamepad is unavailable

A keyboard and mouse are the dependable fallback when no controller is available, when a game does not support gamepads, or while you troubleshoot a connection. Mac games should support the default keyboard-and-mouse interaction method and map controls predictably, but the exact keys remain a game decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Launch the game and open its Settings, Options, or Controls menu.
  2. Select the keyboard-and-mouse section instead of the controller section.
  3. Confirm movement keys, primary and secondary actions, jump or interact, crouch or sprint, pause, and menu navigation.
  4. If rebinding is available, place frequent actions close to the movement cluster and keep modifier combinations comfortable to press without releasing movement.
  5. Use the game’s reset-to-default command if a key stops working after customization.
  6. Test the complete layout in a safe area before entering a competitive or unpausable section.

Do not assume that a controller button and a keyboard key have equivalent labels across games. One title may use a face button for confirmation while another uses it for a context action; keyboard defaults can differ just as much. When rebinding is unavailable, use the documented defaults shown by that game.

Bluetooth versus wired: which connection should you choose?

Factor Bluetooth Wired USB
Setup Requires discovery mode and pairing in System Settings > Bluetooth. Connect the cable; an adapter may be required when the plugs do not match.
Convenience No cable across the desk and useful for a controller used from a distance. No pairing step and normally no wireless battery management.
Troubleshooting Remove the old pairing and repeat discovery mode if the device is missing. Check the cable, port, adapter, and whether the cable carries data.
MaPC check Open MaPC’s Controllers tab and confirm that macOS exposes the device before diagnosing the game.
Compatibility The game still must support the controller profile; connection type does not bypass game restrictions.

Use Bluetooth for convenience when pairing is stable. Use USB when you need a predictable test path, when wireless pairing repeatedly fails, or when you want to eliminate battery and radio variables from troubleshooting.

Troubleshoot a controller that is not working

Symptom What to check Next action
The controller is missing from macOS Discovery mode, old Bluetooth pairing, cable, port, and any required USB adapter. Power-cycle the controller, remove its old pairing, pair again, or test a direct USB connection.
macOS sees it but MaPC does not MaPC’s Controllers tab and whether the current MaPC beta is running correctly. Quit and reopen MaPC, reconnect the device, and install available MaPC updates before testing again.
MaPC sees it but the game does not The game’s input menu, selected device, and PlayStation-to-Xbox translation switch. Enable the appropriate profile, close the game, and relaunch it.
Only some buttons work Controller profile support and custom bindings. Reset the game’s bindings, test each axis and button, and check whether the title uses only a subset of the standardized profile.
The game will not launch Whether the title is supported by MaPC and whether it uses kernel-level anti-cheat. Consult MaPC’s compatibility information; a kernel-level anti-cheat title cannot run on macOS through MaPC.
A DirectX 12 game fails DirectX 12 is an experimental advanced path in MaPC. Install Apple’s Game Porting Toolkit separately if you are intentionally testing that path; it is not included in MaPC Pro, and success is not guaranteed.

When the device is absent from macOS

Repeat the controller’s discovery-mode procedure and remove the existing Bluetooth pairing before reconnecting. For a wired device, inspect the connector, try another port, bypass a hub, and verify whether your Mac needs a USB adapter. Do not proceed to game settings until the hardware appears to macOS and MaPC.

When the device is visible but input is ignored

Open the game’s input screen, then inspect MaPC’s Controllers tab. For a DualShock 4, DualSense, or Backbone One PlayStation Edition in an Xbox-only title, verify that the translation switch is enabled. Restart the game after changing that setting because some titles detect devices only during startup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When only a few controls respond

Reset the game’s bindings and test the controller profile again. Standardized profiles expose common controls, but a game chooses which controls to consume. Missing vibration, an unused button, or an axis that is not supported by the title is therefore not automatically a MaPC failure.

When the title itself cannot run

Input troubleshooting cannot fix a launch restriction. MaPC documents that some games require tweaks and some do not run, while kernel-level anti-cheat games cannot run on macOS. DirectX 12 support is described as experimental and requires a separate installation of Apple’s Game Porting Toolkit. Treat those as game-compatibility limits rather than controller defects.

How to choose a controller for MaPC

There is no published aggregate latency, frame-rate, or library-compatibility ranking for controllers in MaPC. Choose based on the specific game and your connection needs rather than an unsupported universal performance claim.

  • Connection: Bluetooth reduces cable clutter; wired USB avoids pairing and can be the more stable diagnostic route. Include a USB adapter in your plan only when the Mac and controller connectors differ.
  • Layout: Xbox-style layouts generally match games that display Xbox prompts directly. PlayStation-style devices can use MaPC’s translation switch in Xbox-only games, but you should still verify every binding.
  • Game support: Check the title’s controller requirements, launcher behavior, compatibility status, and anti-cheat restrictions.
  • Ergonomics: Consider stick placement, trigger travel, button reach, weight, and whether the device is comfortable for the length of your sessions.
  • Remapping: Prefer a game that exposes complete binding controls when you need a nonstandard layout. A controller cannot compensate for a title that offers no usable remapping.

A DualSense is a concrete option for readers who already own a PlayStation-style controller because MaPC explicitly lists it among the devices supported by its translation update. That statement does not establish a performance advantage over another controller or guarantee compatibility with every game.

Keeping MaPC and your input setup reliable

  • Keep macOS updated within the version supported by MaPC, and note the exact macOS version when reporting a problem.
  • Check MaPC’s changelog when a controller worked in an earlier beta but disappears after an update. MaPC 1.1.3 Beta, dated October 18, 2026, includes Steam startup fixes and other beta changes.
  • Pair or connect one controller at a time while diagnosing a problem. Multiple input devices can make it unclear which profile the game selected.
  • Test in a game’s control screen before committing to a long session.
  • Keep roughly 30 GB free for MaPC’s engine and games, plus the space required by each installed title, so an update or installation does not fail for lack of storage.
  • When contacting support, include the game, Mac model, macOS version, MaPC version, connection type, controller model, the exact symptom, and the MaPC log.

MaPC is still beta software, so a later release can change controller menus, translation behavior, or game compatibility. Record the version whenever you troubleshoot; it makes a repeatable problem much easier to identify.

A practical first-session checklist

  1. Confirm that the Mac is Apple Silicon and runs macOS 15 or later.
  2. Free approximately 30 GB for MaPC’s engine and games, in addition to the game’s own requirement.
  3. Pair the controller in System Settings > Bluetooth, or connect it by a compatible USB cable and adapter.
  4. Open MaPC’s Controllers tab and verify detection.
  5. If using a PlayStation-style controller with an Xbox-only title, leave MaPC’s translation switch enabled.
  6. Launch the game, open its input settings, and select the detected controller.
  7. Test movement, sticks, triggers, face buttons, shoulder buttons, pause, and menu navigation.
  8. Reset bindings and restart the game if controls are incomplete.
  9. If the controller still fails, compare the symptom with the troubleshooting table before changing hardware.
  10. Keep a keyboard and mouse available for games without usable gamepad support.

Following this order isolates each layer: physical connection, macOS detection, MaPC exposure, and the game’s own input profile. That prevents you from treating a game-support or anti-cheat restriction as a defective controller.
