To screenshot an entire webpage in Chrome without an extension, open the page, launch DevTools, turn on the device toolbar, then choose More options → Capture a full size screenshot. Chrome saves one image containing content below the visible viewport. Use the ordinary Capture screenshot command only when you want the current viewport.
Chrome’s built-in full-page screenshot method
Chrome DevTools includes a scrolling screenshot command, so you do not need an extension for occasional captures. It captures the whole document, including content that is not currently visible in the viewport.
- Open the page. Navigate to the webpage in desktop Chrome and wait for the initial load to finish.
- Open DevTools. Right-click anywhere on the page and select Inspect. DevTools normally docks to the side or bottom of the browser.
- Enable the device toolbar. Click the phone-and-tablet icon in DevTools. The screenshot controls are exposed through the device emulation toolbar.
- Open More options. In the device toolbar, open the three-dot More options menu.
- Choose Capture a full size screenshot. Do not select the similarly named regular capture command; that one saves only the current viewport.
- Save the download. Chrome downloads the resulting image, usually as a PNG. Check your Downloads folder and rename it if a descriptive filename is important.
The command is available alongside other DevTools capture modes, including node, oversized-node, mobile/device-frame and area screenshots. The full-size option is the one intended for a complete scrolling page.
What the two capture commands mean
| Command | Result | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Capture screenshot | Only the pixels currently visible in the emulated viewport | You need a hero section, dialog or other on-screen region |
| Capture a full size screenshot | One image covering the page’s full document height | You need a Chrome full-page screenshot or a whole webpage as one image |
Prepare the page before capturing
A full-size command can only capture content that the page has rendered. Spend a few seconds preparing pages that load content progressively.

Let loading finish
Wait for the spinner, skeleton cards and major network activity to stop. If images are lazy-loaded only when they approach the viewport, scroll through the page once before taking the screenshot, then return to the top and capture it.
Close obstructing UI
Dismiss subscription dialogs, chat panels, cookie notices and sign-in prompts when they cover content. A full-page image records those overlays if they remain open.
Set the intended viewport
Use the device-toolbar width and height controls to reproduce a desktop, tablet or phone layout. Responsive breakpoints can change the page’s navigation, column count and total height, so capture at the width your reader or test requires.
Handle long and changing pages
Pages with continuously loading feeds, advertisements that change height, carousels or animated counters may produce inconsistent images. Pause animations where possible, wait for ads to settle and capture again if the layout shifts.

When DevTools does not produce a complete image
The command captures the document that Chrome can render, not an unlimited virtual canvas. These page designs deserve special checks:
- Infinite-scroll feeds: the page may not create later items until you scroll. A single capture can end before content that has never been rendered.
- Virtualized lists: frameworks may keep only nearby rows in the DOM. Scrolling screenshots can therefore omit rows that were recycled out of view.
- Nested scrolling panels: a dashboard may scroll inside a fixed-height panel rather than through the document. The outer full-size capture does not always expand that panel.
- Fixed headers and chat widgets: sticky elements can appear repeatedly or obscure text. Hide or close them before capture.
- Editor and preview shells: design tools sometimes render the preview in a canvas or iframe whose internal height is not exposed to the document.
- Cross-origin frames: an embedded frame can have its own scrolling context and may not be included as a fully expanded document.
For these cases, capture the relevant element from DevTools when possible, export from the application itself, or use a tool that explicitly supports the page’s structure. Always inspect the saved image rather than assuming a successful download means every section is present.
Browser extensions for repeated captures
If you take scrolling screenshots frequently, an extension can reduce the DevTools steps. Install only from the current Chrome Web Store listing, review requested permissions and check the publisher’s privacy disclosure before granting access to every site.
| Tool | Current listing detail | Strengths | Checks and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| GoFullPage | Version 8.9; changelog dated September 24, 2026 | One-click full-page capture; PNG and PDF export; ongoing fixes for scrollbars, frames, smooth scrolling, fixed elements and LLM chat interfaces | It is an external extension. Verify current permissions, privacy terms and store availability before installation. |
| FullPageShot | Version 2.3.0; updated September 24, 2026 | Open-source toolbar/shortcut workflow; saves a local PNG; listing says screenshots are not uploaded | Uses debugger and downloads permissions. Its listing warns that virtualized or infinite-scroll feeds and some editor preview shells may not capture completely. |
Extensions are convenient, but they do not remove the underlying rendering problem: if a page never exposes content in the DOM, a DOM-based scrolling tool may not be able to include it.

Or skip the browser setup
For automated jobs, repeatable URLs or server-side workflows, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one HTTP request. Its clean-shot process accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
See the complete parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. This cURL example requests a WebP image:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`Screenshot failed: ${res.status}`);
const fs = await import('node:fs/promises');
await fs.writeFile('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer()));
Options useful for full-page automation
- Full-page capture with lazy images loaded, a single element selected by CSS selector, dark mode, 12 device presets or any custom viewport, and retina scale.
- PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF output. PDF controls include paper size, margins, landscape mode and page ranges.
- Custom CSS and JavaScript, a click before capture, hidden selectors, and waits for a selector, fixed delay or network idle.
- Blocking for ads, trackers, requests or resource types; custom headers, cookies, user agent and Authorization; timezone and geolocation.
- Transparent backgrounds, image resizing, a cache with a TTL you choose, signed links for public
<img>tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. - Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs are accepted, which can simplify migration.
ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients, with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools.

The image is only the viewport
You selected Capture screenshot. Reopen the menu and choose Capture a full size screenshot.
Images or cards are missing
Scroll through the page to trigger lazy loading, wait for thumbnails to finish, return to the top and capture again. For a virtualized list, the missing rows may never coexist in the DOM; use an application export or a tool designed for that feed.
The bottom of the page is cut off
Look for an inner scrolling panel or a “load more” control. Expand the panel if the site allows it, activate all pagination, then recapture. A fixed-height iframe may need to be captured separately.

Sticky navigation and chat widgets remain visible during scrolling. Close them, disable the site’s floating controls, or hide the selectors through a capture tool that supports custom CSS.
The layout changes between attempts
Animations, rotating ads, personalized content and delayed fonts can shift element positions. Wait for fonts and major requests to settle, use a stable viewport and repeat the capture under the same signed-in state.

Choosing the right approach
- Use DevTools for occasional, manual captures when you want no installation and the page is a conventional document.
- Use an extension when a one-click workflow or PDF export saves time, provided its permissions and privacy practices fit your work.
- Use ScreenshotNeo when a script, CI job, API, MCP client, clean consent-free output, PDF generation or predictable billing matters.
Whichever method you select, open the resulting file and verify the page bottom, lazy-loaded media, embedded content and overlays. A downloaded file is not proof that a dynamic page rendered every section.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Chrome’s full-size command capture the browser tabs, address bar or bookmarks?
No. It captures the webpage rendered in the content area, not Chrome’s surrounding interface.
Can I capture a full page as a PDF from DevTools?
The documented command produces an image. For PDF output, use Chrome’s print dialog or a capture service such as ScreenshotNeo with PDF options.
Why is a page taller in the screenshot than in the browser window?
The full-size command uses the document’s rendered height, so content below the viewport is included in one image.
Is an extension required for a Chrome scrolling screenshot?
No. DevTools provides the full-size command; extensions are optional conveniences for repeated work.
