Chrome has no built-in Internet Explorer compatibility mode and cannot switch to Internet Explorer’s rendering engine. For an old site, use the browser the site supports; in a managed Windows organization, administrators can route selected URLs from Chrome to Microsoft Edge in IE mode using Chrome Enterprise Legacy Browser Support (LBS). If you only need to test browser identification, you can change Chrome’s user-agent string—but that does not make Chrome render like IE.
First decide what “Chrome compatibility mode” means
The phrase can refer to two different jobs: making a legacy website work, or checking how a site responds to a claimed browser identity. The right solution depends on which one you need.

Can you turn on Internet Explorer mode in Chrome?
No. Chrome does not include a general-purpose setting that changes its rendering engine to Internet Explorer’s. Google describes user-agent testing as changing the string a browser sends; websites may identify browsers in other ways too. For organizations: route legacy URLs from Chrome to Edge IE mode
Google’s documented Edge IE-mode integration calls for Edge 87 or later and Chrome 87 or later. Google describes integrated LBS for Chrome 74 and later on Windows. These are requirements stated in the cited setup instructions, not a guarantee that every current app or deployment will work; confirm current requirements in Google’s documentation before rollout. 1. Use integrated LBS, not the retired extension
For Chrome 88 and later, Google says integrated LBS is supported and the former LBS extension is no longer installable. Follow Google’s integrated Windows setup rather than relying on the old extension. Migrate from the LBS extension
2. Configure policy and the URL rules
An administrator enables the LBS policy, supplies the URL rules or enterprise site list, and selects the alternate browser. Google’s instructions cover URL lists and Internet Explorer/Edge enterprise site lists; for an Edge IE-mode deployment, configure Edge IE mode and make the Chrome and Edge settings refer to the intended shared list. 3. Pilot the rules before broad deployment
Test the intended URLs with a limited group first. Confirm that only the required sites route to the alternate browser and that no unintended greylist rule allows either browser. Validate the applications themselves, especially if they depend on technologies such as ActiveX, Java, or Silverlight; routing is not proof that the application works correctly.

4. Check the applied policies and routing decision
- In Chrome, open
chrome://policyto check whether the expected policies have been applied. - Open
chrome://browser-switch/internalsto inspect URL routing, site lists, and grey lists. - In Edge, check
edge://policyandedge://compatfor policy and compatibility configuration. - If a Windows Group Policy change has not appeared, Google’s setup guidance suggests refreshing policy with
gpupdate /force.

For developers: test a site’s user-agent response
If your goal is to see what a site does when it receives a different user-agent string, use a user-agent switching extension or a browser developer testing method. This tests behavior tied to browser identification; it does not test another browser’s layout engine, JavaScript implementation, plugins, or legacy components. Troubleshooting
The old website still fails after changing the user agent
The override changes the browser identity string, not Chrome’s rendering engine or compatibility features. Use the site’s supported browser or ask its owner or administrator about the required setup.
A managed URL opens in the wrong browser
Check the applied Chrome policies at chrome://policy, then inspect the URL decision and configured lists at chrome://browser-switch/internals. Review the URL rules and look for an unintended greylist entry. In an Edge IE-mode deployment, confirm Edge’s policies and compatibility settings at edge://policy and edge://compat.

Confirm that Edge is actually configured for IE mode and that Chrome and Edge refer to the intended shared site list. Then test the app itself. A policy change does not appear in Chrome
Check chrome://policy for the policy and its status. If your Windows policy configuration has not refreshed, Google recommends trying gpupdate /force as part of its setup guidance. Google’s integrated LBS policy instructions
