To preview an outfit in ChatGPT, open a clothing or accessory listing that shows Try on, select it, then take or upload a selfie. ChatGPT generates an image showing how the item could look on you. You can also upload a photo of clothing or an accessory in a conversation and ask for a preview. Treat either result as a visual mock-up—not proof of fit, size, color, or exact appearance.
Try on an item from a ChatGPT product listing
- Find a clothing or accessory product listing in ChatGPT that displays Try on. The control is not promised on every listing.
- Select Try on.
- Take a selfie or upload one when prompted.
- View the generated try-on image to see how the item could look on you.
Preview clothing from a photo you provide
If you have a picture of an item rather than a ChatGPT product listing, upload the clothing or accessory image in a conversation and ask ChatGPT to show how it could look on you. This route uses the item image you supply; the listing route starts with an item attached to a product card. OpenAI does not state that one method produces more accurate results than the other. See Shopping with ChatGPT Search.
Manage the selfie saved for future try-ons
OpenAI says the reference photo is saved for future try-ons. To change or delete it, go to Settings → Personalization → Reference photos. The Shopping help page describes the same controls, and the October 1, 2026 release notes announced reference-photo reuse. See Shopping with ChatGPT Search and ChatGPT — Release Notes.
What a try-on image can—and cannot—tell you
OpenAI cautions: “Try-on images may not represent the product or your appearance exactly and do not guarantee fit or size.” The generated image is a visual preview, not a fitting-room measurement or assurance that the real item will match the image in color, drape, or appearance. Before buying, check the merchant’s measurements, product details, and return policy.

Availability and photo requirements
Try-on guidance covers clothing and accessories on product listings, but OpenAI’s help pages do not provide a complete country-by-country or plan-by-plan rollout list. Look for Try on in your own ChatGPT shopping interface; its absence does not establish why the feature is unavailable to you.
ChatGPT Images is documented as available on all tiers and on web, iOS, and Android, but that general availability does not establish that shopping-specific try-on is available to every account or location. The dedicated try-on guidance also does not publish separate photo-format or size requirements. OpenAI’s general image-input guidance lists PNG, JPEG, and non-animated GIF images up to 20 MB, attachable with the plus control, drag-and-drop, or paste; these are general input instructions, not a dedicated try-on specification. See Images in ChatGPT and ChatGPT Image Inputs FAQ.
