You can use ChatGPT to preview clothing in two ways: select Try on on a product listing in ChatGPT Shopping, or upload a clothing photo in a conversation and ask how it might look on you. You can also edit an existing photo with ChatGPT Images. These tools create visual previews, not reliable sizing or fit assessments.
Choose the route that matches your photo

OpenAI documents Shopping try-on on mobile and web, and ChatGPT Images on web, iOS, and Android. Availability and interface can vary by account, settings, region, plan, and usage limits. See Shopping with ChatGPT Search and Images in ChatGPT.
Use Try on from a ChatGPT Shopping listing
- Open ChatGPT on mobile or the web and find the clothing or accessory listing you want to preview.
- Look for and select Try on on the listing.
- Take a selfie or upload one when prompted.
- Review the generated image. Treat it as a visual preview rather than a representation of exact fit or product details.
ChatGPT Shopping lets you change or remove try-on reference photos under Settings → Personalization → Reference photos. OpenAI says shopping results are independently selected, not ads, and are not influenced by OpenAI partnerships.
Ask ChatGPT about a clothing photo
- Start a conversation and attach a clear photo of the clothing or accessory.
- If you want the item shown on you, attach a selfie as well.
- Describe what you want ChatGPT to do. For example: “Show how this jacket might look on me using the selfie I uploaded. Keep my face, pose, and background the same; change only the clothing.”
- Review the result and ask for adjustments if needed.
This prompt is a useful way to specify the requested edit, not a guarantee that ChatGPT will preserve your face, pose, background, color, texture, or garment cut exactly. OpenAI documents the ability to upload an item image and ask how it could look on you, but does not publish a comparison of this route’s accuracy against Shopping’s Try on flow.

Edit clothing in an existing photo
- Open ChatGPT Images on web, iOS, or Android and upload the photo you want to edit.
- Describe the clothing change and identify where it should appear.
- If the editor offers area selection, highlight the intended region before entering the instruction.
- Inspect the result; refine the instruction or selection if needed.
Area selection can help direct an edit, but its boundaries are not always precise and changes may extend outside the highlighted area. ChatGPT Images is listed as available on all tiers; “Images with thinking” is listed for Plus, Pro, and Business, while Enterprise and Edu are described as upcoming on OpenAI’s Images in ChatGPT page accessed October 3, 2026.
Prepare an image ChatGPT can interpret
- Use PNG, JPEG/JPG, or a non-animated GIF. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Image Inputs FAQ lists a limit of 20 MB per image, accessed October 3, 2026.
- Use a clear, well-lit image where the clothing is visible. OpenAI warns that unclear images may be interpreted less accurately.
- The number of images you can attach depends on their size and the accompanying text; image input is also subject to plan-specific usage limits and account settings.
Understand what a virtual try-on can and cannot tell you
A generated image is not a sizing tool. OpenAI warns that “Try-on images may not represent the product or your appearance exactly and do not guarantee fit or size.” Check the merchant’s measurements, product details, and return terms before buying. The official documentation does not provide a try-on accuracy statistic, so a preview should not be treated as proof that a garment’s color, texture, cut, or fit will match the real item.

Review photo privacy and saved images
If you use a personal consumer account, OpenAI says content may be used to improve models depending on your settings. To stop new conversations from being used for model improvement, turn off Improve the model for everyone in Data Controls; those conversations remain in chat history. Data controls in ChatGPT explains the setting.
Temporary Chats are excluded from history, do not create or update memories, and are not used for model improvement while temporary. OpenAI may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety. See How OpenAI handles data in consumer services.

ChatGPT Images says generated images are saved under Images, where you can open, copy, download, or share them. Deleting the conversation deletes its image from My images, but files saved separately in Library may require separate deletion. OpenAI says deleted saved chats are scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days, subject to stated exceptions; regular chats otherwise remain until deleted or removed under a workspace policy. Details are in Chat and file retention in ChatGPT. For Shopping try-on reference photos, use Settings → Personalization → Reference photos to change or remove them.
