ChatGPT can locate a value buried in a long page, table, or interactive view—but it cannot see private data or guarantee that every result is correct. The reliable method is to name the exact page and fields, use the access method that fits the page, require evidence for each value, and verify the result against the source yourself.
What “hidden data” means on a web page
In this guide, hidden means information that is public but difficult to find: a row deep in a table, text behind an accordion, a value revealed by a filter, or content loaded after a button click. It does not mean private records, bypassing a login, defeating a paywall, evading bot protection, or extracting data that the site does not make available to you.
ChatGPT may be unable to reach content that is personalized, login-gated, blocked, or loaded only after a script runs. Treat any answer as a lead until you inspect the cited page.
How can I find data on a webpage with ChatGPT?
- Identify the exact page. Paste the URL, open it in an available browser, or provide the relevant HTML, text, PDF, or screenshot. If several pages are possible, specify the canonical page and date.
- Name the fields and rules. Ask for concrete operations such as “find the row for March 2025 and return the value in the revenue column” or “list every entry tagged API, preserving the spelling and units.” Define whether you want all matches, the first match, totals, or the value as displayed.
- Choose an access method. Use Search for public-web discovery, Deep Research for a cited multi-source report, the desktop app’s built-in browser for work on the current page, or a site’s own tool when it exposes one.
- Require page-level evidence. Ask ChatGPT to provide the source URL and quote the table heading, row label, or nearby passage for every result. This makes a plausible-looking extraction auditable.
- Verify manually. Open the citation, find the same heading or row, and check number formatting, units, date, pagination, and filters. OpenAI cautions that “Search results and citations may be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect.” Searching the web with ChatGPT explains the limitation.

“Open URL. Find every row where condition. Return fields in a table, preserving units and date labels. For each row, quote the relevant heading or row text and link the source. Can ChatGPT read a table on a website?
Often, yes, when the table is publicly reachable and represented in the page content ChatGPT can access. Give the table a precise target: column names, row labels, date range, and whether hidden pages or pagination must be checked. Ask it to preserve blank cells, footnotes, symbols, and the table’s units instead of silently converting them.
For a long table, request a staged process: first identify the table title and columns, then return matching rows, then calculate any totals. Ask for the exact row and column labels alongside each number. Compare the output with the rendered table; merged cells, repeated headers, sorting controls, and “load more” buttons can cause omissions or shifted columns.

Constrain transformations
Say whether ChatGPT may convert currencies, round decimals, add rows, or interpret abbreviations. For audit work, request the displayed value first and any calculation in a separate column. Ask it to mark “not found” when a field is absent.
Handle repeated values
Tell it to return every occurrence and include nearby context when a label appears more than once. Require page numbers, tab names, or filter states when the interface provides them.

Dynamic loading
A page may deliver an empty shell and fetch rows only after JavaScript runs, scrolling, filtering, or clicking “Load more.” Search indexes may contain only the shell. Use a live browser or site tool if available; otherwise paste or upload the loaded table or export.
Login, permissions, and personalization
ChatGPT cannot legitimately bypass authentication. A signed-in dashboard may show different values by account, role, region, or cookies. Index and cache limits

- Is the URL the intended page, edition, region, and date?

“The value is not on the page”
Ask for the exact table title, date, and column, then provide the page content or a screenshot. The value may be behind pagination or loaded dynamically.
The citation opens a different or old page
